Sportal for afl.com.au
The Brisbane Lions have elevated defender/forward Josh Drummond from their rookie list to senior list.
Drummond has been promoted due to the season-ending knee injury sustained by midfielder Richard Hadley against Richmond in a Wizard Regional Challenge Series match.
The 22 year-old was also placed on the senior list last season, when emerging Lion Daniel Merrett was on the long-term injury list and was named an emergency on three occasions.
Drummond has shone in the AFLQ this season, having been named the Suncoast Lions' best player in three of the four matches he has played.

Recent rookie elevation Josh Drummond continued his smooth transition to AFL football with a fine display in the AAPT Brisbane Lions' four-point loss to Richmond at the Gabba on Saturday night.
Drummond, who debuted at senior level against Adelaide last weekend, stood tall in the face of the Tigers' many attacking raids to finish with 18 disposals and five marks.
He pumped the bal inside 50m three times and, most impressively of all, handled kick-in duties with aplomb when asked to replace regular kicker Chris Johnson for most of the last three quarters.
The 22-year-old's display didn't escape the eye of triple-premiership coach Leigh Matthews, who, while disappointed by the loss, was pleased with the Sunshine Coast product's poise and foot skills.
"Josh has had a couple of really good games. He looks like he's played a lot of senior football," Matthews said.
"He's got more composure out there than some guys who have got hundreds more games under their belt. Josh has been a plus for us - I'm very pleased.
"He's a good kick of the ball. He's taken a while to earn his spot, to get his chance and he's played all-right in the couple he has."

Brisbane has reaped the benefit of its careful cultivation of Queensland footballing talent with local boys Josh Drummond and Marcus Allan earning spots on the senior list this week.
Twenty two-year old Drummond was elevated from the rookie list for the second time this year when Richard Hadley was placed on the long-term injury list. He impressed with his poise and composure in defence.
After making his debut against Adelaide in round eight, the Maroochydore local went on to play 14 games and put in some eye-catching performances - including a 26-possession, eight-mark effort against Essendon in round 17.
The long-kicking left footer played with the Northern Eagles in the local competition before being rookie-listed by the Lions in 2004 and he couldn't be happier with his permanent elevation.
"At the start of the year I was probably a long way off, but the goal was to get a game and just hope for a bit of luck. Obviously, I never imagined that things would turn out the way they did," Drummond told lions.com.au.
"It's definitely not easy out there but I had some really good experienced players alongside me and that definitely helped. I think being a few years older than most first- year players are was also a pretty big help - I've played a lot of reserves footy against older guys and that was good preparation."

Josh back in black
10.01.2007
By NATHAN WOULFE
FOR Maroochydore product Josh Drummond, 2006 was probably not his most memorable season.
Troubled by ankle, shoulder and soft tissue injuries, he spent weeks on the sidelines as the Lions went from premiership big cats to competition kittens.
The arrival of the 2007 pre-season sees the injuries all but distant memories and Drummond ready to return to the paddock; in any position coach Leigh Matthews deems necessary.
“Anywhere on the paddock is a good start,” Drummond said.
“I’ve played mostly in the backline, but played forward a bit last year.
“I’m not really fussed so long as I’m healthy.
“I’ll do whatever I can to help the team out; it’s good to be able to give the option and not be a one-dimensional player.”
With pre-season training gaining momentum, Drummond is still nursing the troublesome shoulder that limited his match time in 2006.
“It is dragging on, but I’m back into training and concentrating on building muscle and getting it stronger,” he said.
“I’m feeling good; all the boys are looking fit and healthy.”
None more than Lions rookie Daniel Dzufer, who has played alongside Drummond for the Suncoast Lions.
“He was pretty unlucky not to get drafted,” Drummond said.
“He’s training really hard; he always puts it in on the track.
“Obviously he’s still young so he has a couple of years to have a real crack at it.”
Drummond said that if the Lions’ injury woes from last season continue, Dzufer may not have to wait long for his shot at the big league.
“Our last couple of years have been a bit disappointing; we had a lot of injuries to our big names last year; the list changed over a fair bit,” he said.
“It gave the young guys a taste and that should hold us in good stead for this year.
“We just need a few of the young blokes to step up and help out.”

Josh Drummond on board with the Sunshine Coast Juniors
It is with great pleasure that the Caloundra RSL AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors announce that Brisbane Lions defender Josh Drummond has become the League’s ambassador for season 2007.
Josh was born in April 1983 and spent most of his junior days with a football in his hands. At only a young age, he joined his local junior football club, the Maroochydore Roos, where he remained until he graduated as an under 16 player in 1999.
“There was a period where we won three premierships in a row all by six points or less,” Drummond recalls. “We won one by six points, one by two points and one by one point which was just amazing.”
Josh singled out the Maroochydore Roos’ nail-biting one point triumph over the Cooloola Bears in a tough and muddy battle for the 1993 premiership as one of his junior highlights.
He continued his football journey representing a number of Sunshine Coast and Queensland Country sides, including time with the AFLQ’s Northern Eagles where he chased his dream of playing at the highest level.
Josh’s big break came in 2003 when he was drafted to the Brisbane Lions’ rookie list where he spent most of his time preparing himself both physically and mentally for the rigours of AFL. When Lions forward-come-backman Daniel Merrett was struck down with a bout of glandular fever in 2004, the Lions chose to elevate Drummond from the rookie list and made him available for senior selection. During his time on the club’s senior list, he was selected as an emergency four times and failed to take his long-awaited AFL debut.
Fortunately lightning struck twice for Drummond. Through persistence, hard work and a string of fine performances with the Suncoast Lions in 2005, Drummond was elevated for a second time when team mate Richard Hadley suffered his first season-ending knee injury.
Drummond was determined to make the most of his second chance when the time arose for him to take to the field for the first time on the big stage. His opportunity came in round 8 of 2005 when the Lions travelled to AAMI Stadium to tackle the Adelaide Crows. Despite being in traditionally hostile territory, Drummond shone on debut and helped the Lions edge over the line in a tight contest. Playing predominantly in the backline, he limited dangerous Crows forward Scott Welsh to just seven possessions and two goals while helping himself to 15 possessions, five of which cleared the ball from the team’s defensive 50m.
His poise, run and exceptional long kicking made him a valuable asset for the remainder of the season where he played 14 of the Club’s final 15 matches. By seasons end, his performances were rewarded with a permanent elevation onto the Lions senior list.
Drummond was dealt a cruel blow at the beginning of the 2006 season when he sustained a serious shoulder injury in the first round from which he didn’t return for three months. He revisited his 2005 form upon return later in the season before back related hamstring injuries ended his season prematurely. He managed only a total of 7 matches in his second season with the Brisbane Lions.
Through sheer determination and perserverence, Josh has developed into an uncompromising backman with a raking left foot kick that coach Leigh Matthews has used to advantage from the kick-ins. When the opportunity presents, Josh has also used his kicking ability to effect up forward kicking a career total of 12 goals.
Despite having his 2007 pre-season delayed somewhat through injury, Drummond is now determined to return to the senior team this season despite having his 2007 pre-season delayed by minor injury concerns.
“I’m now really just keen to get back out onto the field and get a full and consistent year of senior football out of myself,” he said.
Keep an eye out for Josh in the number 39 Guernsey for the Lions when their season commences on Saturday 31 March against Hawthorn at the Gabba.

I think I prefer him in the backline. I saw him play forward at one game and he gave me too much angst with his accuracy or rather, inaccuracy.

I'm with you Dan. We need someone you can kick in. Whether we need his style of player or not down back we were murdered as a result of rubbish kick-ins last year and we need someone with an accurate long kick...and yes, we also need some guys who know where to run to receive said kick.

Injury relegates Drummond to sideline
15.03.2007
BRISBANE Lions player Josh Drummond is resigned to missing the start of the AFL season after suffering yet another frustrating injury that has the potential to sideline him for a lengthy period. The Maroochydore product’s 2007 preparations have been severely hampered by an upper leg injury, which has hampered the utility’s pre-season preparations since Christmas.
The news is a cruel blow for the 23-year-old, who suffered a dislocated shoulder in the opening round last season against Geelong, before injuring his quad at training after being selected to make his seniors return in round 12 against the Bulldogs.
After playing just eight top-level matches last year, Drummond admits he is unable to put a timeframe on when he will return to the football field.
"It could be as short as three weeks, it could be as long as indefinite. You just don’t know with the nature of the injury and how it’s going to pull up," he said.
Drummond said he was enjoying one of his best pre-seasons to date as a Lion before injury reared its ugly head yet again.
"I had a pretty good pre-season up until Christmas time and then it went haywire. It’s frustrating but there’s not much I can do about it at the moment," he said.
"I woke up and went for a run one morning and it felt a little funny.
"I was still able to train for a couple of weeks, but it gradually got worse and worse to the extent where I had to really back off what I was doing (at training).
"Hopefully I’ll be back into full training next week, provided it pulls up all right."
The injury is listed as a three-to-four-week proposition on the club’s website, but Drummond is optimistic he will be back on deck for the Suncoast Lions’ opening game of the season.
"I’m hoping the best case scenario is to play round one in the reserves and try and get back from there," he said.
Drummond admits it has been tough watching the Lions’ promising array of youngsters perform so well in the NAB Cup, and would desperately love to be playing in the pre-season competition final against Carlton on Saturday night.
"Most of the young guys wouldn’t have played in too many big games, even also myself," he said.
"Even though its a pre-season competition it’s a final and something to get excited about.
"Personally it’s frustrating, but it’s also good to see the way they’re playing and we’ve still got a few blokes to come back in."
On the positive side, the shoulder injury that wrecked his 2006 season is all but a distant memory.
"My shoulder’s feeling great. Even when I came back last year it was nowhere near one hundred per cent," he said. "But that’s ancient history and I won’t be worrying too much about that."

Seven goals for Drummond in Suncoast's first victory
07.05.2007
THE Sunshine Coast's best AFL product, Josh Drummond, engineered the Suncoast Lions' first win of the AFLQ Velocity Sports Cup season with a brilliant display in a high-quality win over Morningside at the Gabba yesterday.
Drummond booted three goals in the first quarter and four in the last as he spearheaded two huge Lions surges that resulted in a 20.18 (138)-15.13 (103) victory.
Playing his fourth game back after a string of injury problems in the off-season, Drummond looked match-hardened and ready for a senior recall from the outset.
Opposed to former Lions rookie list player Matt Pardew, Drummond ran all over the forward line to collect his kicks and most of the ball was channelled through him as the Suncoast posted seven of the first nine goals inside 15 minutes.
In a sparkling opening to the end-to-end contest, 15 goals were kicked between the two sides as the Lions opened a 20-point gap.
They maintained that through the middle parts of the game, despite Drummond's radar going amiss with four shots at goal going awry.
It will be interesting when Drummo gets back what role he will play. The back half looks fairly settled so he may get a run in the forward line. He played forward a bit last year and was only moderately successful. If he does play in defence, will he get the kick in duties? Drummond is a beautiful kick, but Adcock has been doing a good job. Adcock seems to be directing the play in the back half, so they may feel it is best if they leave him with the kick ins.

Switched back to defence and looked a lot better player. He is the man for the kickins and to play that 'quarterback' role. He has sublime footskills which allows him to switch the play without risk, and he can kick very long which opens up a lot more options.

Not sure if this has been posted any where (knowing my luck it would have been) but the below is from the AFL site's Monday wrap:
How's stat? … Josh Drummond plays the game of the season
In just his third match of 2007 after a gluteal injury interrupted his start to the season, Brisbane Lion Josh Drummond produced the best performance of the season, at least according to Champion Data player rankings. Alongside the small matter of intercepting a Kane Johnson pass to Matthew Richardson just moments before the final siren, Drummond won a game-high 30 disposals at a 97 per cent efficiency rate, adding 13 marks and seven contested possessions. His Champion Data rating of 227 points was a season-best by any AFL player, pipping West Coast's Daniel Kerr, who won 225 points in round one against Sydney.
Cannot believe he has only played 3 games this year. I have only watched the first qtr of the tiges game (due to deficiency of the streaming capability of the AFL site) but was good to see him resume the kick-in responsabilities again.

I think he's become a very important player for us. Our defensive unit, while stingy, is not overly skillful. We can get away with this with Drummond playing the quarterback role, but we may be exposed without him. I also remember our kick ins were very poor until Drummo took over.

JMac's kicking is better and Roey's is pretty good most of the time. Might need Stiller to play further back this week, to connect and deliver the ball out of there.
To be fair though, as good as Drummond has undoubtedly been since he returned, last week he had little impact on the game and that didn't really limit us at all. Stiller, Power and Lappin in particular did a lot of the hard running deep in defense.

Brisbane Lions defender Josh Drummond has succumbed to a knee injury and will miss Saturday night's showdown with the Kangaroos at the Gabba.
Drummond has been a vital member of Brisbane's back six during the Lions' unbeaten four-match run through July, a month which delivered successive victories against the West Coast, Melbourne, Carlton and Collingwood.
"He's been kicking the ball in after behinds and that in itself is a great skill and he does that extremely well - picks the right option really well," Matthews said of Drummond in searing temperatures in Brisbane.
"And he's been a high-possession attacking defender so he's been very good for us."
"We're going to miss him."

I think there is quite a bit of football that is influenced by general impressions - With Drummond in the side i feel it is not just his skills compared to the player he replaces that are visibly higher, but those around him seem to be hitting more targets, etc.

Drummond was selected after completing training on Thursday night, but Matthews admits the decision is far from final.
"He has been ticked as uninjured, but he has had a very bad month's preparation so they are the factors you take into consideration when we have to make our selection decision," Matthews said.
"We'll keep that under advisement.
"He's done all he needs to do to be able to give us as much information as possible about the go-forward, so it is a judgment call."
Drummond is one of Brisbane's best users of the footy and, given his form this season before he was injured against Collingwood, is the match committee's first choice.
But with a season hanging by a thread, they cannot afford to take a gamble if he is not 100 per cent.fit
"He's the defender you want to have the ball in his hands," Matthews said.
"His offensive work out of defence, his ability to kick the ball in after a behind – he plays a very important role.
"But you can only play if you are right and again there is a slight question mark. Is his injury completely healed?
"What we do know is he didn't run until last Tuesday so he hasn't had great preparation.
"There is a reticence. You want him in if he is fit and well but we're not quite sure how fit and well he's going to be."

Key Lion returns to hound Cats
Nick Smart
30Aug07
ATTACKING defender Josh Drummond has declared himself a definite starter for Saturday night's showdown with Geelong after powering through a Lions training session yesterday.
Brisbane will be bolstered by the return of the long-kicking Queenslander, who has not played since round 17's thumping win over Collingwood, because of a lower leg injury.
He was in sensational form at the time of the injury and his absence has left a big hole in the Lions' defensive structure.
The Lions have badly missed his run out of the backline, but the 24-year-old said he would be right to go against the Cats.
"The leg is going pretty well.
"It has been awhile coming around but it is starting to feel good and hopefully I will get a game on the weekend," he said.
Drummond was named for last week's match against the Crows in Adelaide but replaced in the side by Chris Scott.
He was nearly right to play but the coaching staff decided not to rush him back too early.
"I was pretty close.
"It was a combination of missing three or four weeks and I was lacking match fitness. It was a risk going in when you put those things together," he said.
"With this sort of injury you have to tread a fine line and not overdo it. But it seems to have come good now and I have turned a corner."
Drummond's development this season has been outstanding and he was an integral part of the Lions' late season resurgence.
However, injury has never been far away for Drummond.
He has managed only 10 senior matches this season and is working hard to ensure 2008 will be a injury-free season.
"It has been frustrating but I am hoping the luck will turn," he said. "I am putting in the hard work to get all the back stuff right and the hamstring strong so I guess if I do all that, the luck will change.
"Hopefully I will play a full year next season."
The Lions have not conceded their finals chances but realise it is an unlikely prospect.
Even if they beat ladder-leaders Geelong on Saturday night, they need Collingwood to beat Adelaide and lowly Richmond to defeat St Kilda.
Drummond said the team had to focus on the Cats and not worry about the other results.
"If this is our swansong for the year then hopefully we finish off the year on a good note.
"Some say Geelong don't have much to play for because they are cemented in that top spot but for us there is a possibility of finals. I rate our chances against them because we play our best footy against teams that play quick one on one footy."

Josh in Maroons’ Team of the Year
12:00a.m. 11 September 2007
Sunshine Coast born and bred AFL star Josh Drummond has been rewarded for a strong finish to 2007 with a place in the newly inaugurated Queensland Team of the Year.
With more than 50 Queenslanders now playing in the elite national competition, but State of Origin not having been open to the Maroons since 1993, AFL Queensland wanted to begin a tradition and reward its top players by selecting an annual all-star team.
The 22-man side was revealed at the AFL Queensland Awards dinner in Brisbane last night, where Drummond’s name was read out as one of the side’s two half-back flankers.
Such is the spread of Queenslanders through the AFL that only seven Brisbane Lions were included in the Team of the Year.
Drummond played 11 games, mostly through the second half of the year after an injury-interrupted pre-season consigned him to five reserves games with Suncoast before finally getting a chance.
He took it with both hands, showing the same kind of form as he did in 2005 when he was elevated from the rookie list to play 15 games.
So good was Drummond, particularly his kicking ability, that superstar and Brownlow Medal fancy Jonathan Brown described him as being close to the most valuable player in the line-up.

THEY are all dressed up but do they have somewhere to play?
The AFL is still to decide whether Queensland will field a team when State of Origin footy returns next year.
But the AFLQ has no doubts Queenslanders deserve recognition and has decided to annually select its team of the year.
The 22 players announced last night will be represented with a Queensland jumper, following the successful tradition Western Australia has continued since interstate footy was abolished.
Brisbane Lion Josh Drummond, who earned a position in defence, applauded the initiative, saying it was a great honour to be recognised as one of Queensland's best.
"You watch the rugby league and how much everyone gets into it and think wouldn't it be great if we could represent our state," he said.
"It is something to be proud of, there's more and more Queenslanders entering the AFL each year and it's going to get tougher to earn one of these jumpers.
"Let's hope this starts something and one day we can run out in an Origin game at the Gabba."

Coast's Lion confident of future
12:00a.m. 28 September 2007
By Jon Tuxworth
Cocktails, sandy beaches and some general R and R may be high on Josh Drummond’s list of priorities right now. But the Brisbane Lions defender is confident he will walk away content when the more serious matter of negotiating a new deal with the three-time premier is resolved.
The Maroochydore product’s contract expired at the end of this year, and Drummond is hopeful of signing a deal to remain with the Lions until at least the end of 2009.
Currently in Thailand with his teammates on an end-of-season trip, the 24-year-old and his manager should have plenty of chips to bring to the bargaining table upon his return.
After returning from an upper leg injury against Essendon in round eight Drummond enjoyed a stellar season, averaging more than 20 disposals per match across 11 games.
He also ranked 13th in the league for average kicks per game (15) and notched up a career-high 30 disposals in consecutive weeks against Richmond (round 10) and Western Bulldogs (round 11).
His accurate left foot set up plenty of attacking raids from across halfback
“It’s just a matter of going back and forth and trying to get what we want, but we’re getting pretty close and I’d expect to sign relatively shortly,” Drummond said.
“I’m hoping to get that out of the way as soon as possible. I’m looking for a two-year deal to give us some stability, and that seems to be the best case scenario.
“I haven’t really spoken to my manager too much about it. It’s just a matter of sorting out the finer details.”
Drummond is part of a host of Lions currently looking to extend or upgrade their contracts.
“It was good to find a spot in the side and contribute, especially in that four or five week period where we played good footy,” Drummond said.
“I didn’t have much of a pre-season because of injury and I took a little while to get going, but I definitely enjoyed those few games.”
Unfortunately, the dreaded ‘i’ word has never been too far away from Drummond the past two years.
A dislocated shoulder suffered in the opening round of the 2006 season against Geelong, his late start to 2007 and knee and ankle injuries sustained simultaneously against Collingwood in round 17 has restricted Drummond to just 18 matches over the past two years.
It’s little wonder he’s more keen than most of his teammates for the pain of pre-season training to begin.
“Pre-season starts in four or five weeks and I’m confident everything will be right and I will be able to get back into it,” he said.
“Hamstring injuries have given me the most grief in my career but they’ve been fine this year.”
Drummond expects the Lions to improve markedly from their 10th placing this year.

I will tell you though after coming back from Ireland yesterday and hearing the rumour just then on Sports Tonight I had to double check that I heard right and wasn't suffering jet lag and hearing things (I've never suffered jet lag before but it could have been a first time).

Maroochydore product sticks with Lions
12:00a.m. 18 October 2007
By Jon Tuxworth
Brisbane Lion Josh Drummond has rejected tempting overtures from Carlton to re-sign with the Lions for the next three seasons.
The Maroochydore product met with senior Blues officials in Melbourne last week, who put a deal on the table to sign Drummond believed to be well in excess of Brisbane’s initial offer.
Drummond’s camp were reportedly unhappy with the Lions’ opening offer and decided to test the defender’s value on the open market.
Carlton showed interest immediately and threw everything but the kitchen sink at Drummond to lure him to Princes Park.
While Drummond was hesitant to reveal details yesterday it is believed the Lions, after hearing of Carlton’s interest, acted quickly to upgrade Drummond’s deal to a level that was acceptable to all parties.
Drummond’s preference was always to stay at Brisbane, a club for which he hopes to play out his career.
He chose not to reveal just how close he came to signing with the Blues.
“It’s hard to say because it was a pretty whirlwind 24 hours,” Drummond said.
“One minute I was in Brissy and 12 hours later I was down south; it happened really quickly.
“I just went down to see what it was all about. There was no harm in hearing what they had to say.
“I racked my brain and put the pros and cons together and decided that being a Queenslander, and living here my whole life, I wanted to stay.”
Drummond said money was never going to be the deciding factor in his decision.
“It didn’t really matter what money they offered, it was a lifestyle thing,” he said. “I’m 24 now so hopefully I’ve got a good six or seven years left and hopefully I can stay here for the rest of my career.”
Drummond said a return to September action next year is the Brisbane Lions’ main priority.
“Obviously we want to play finals, there’s no denying that,” he said.
“But then again everyone rates their chances at this time of the year and we don’t know how all the other clubs are going to come up.”

End of Season Player Review
Josh Drummond’s year got off to a bad start by suffering a preseason leg injury, and as a result he missed the NAB Cup and the start of the season. In the meantime the new look defensive unit at the Lions had performed above expectations, and by the time Drummo was fit there was a reluctance to tamper with what was already working. There was talk of whether he would be best suited to the backline or the forward line, and he ended up having to wait 5 weeks in the reserves. He finally got the call up for his first senior game in round 8 against Essendon.
Perhaps in hindsight it was a mistake making him wait so long because he had an immediate impact topping our disposal count in 3 of his first 5 games. He was also able to dramatically improve our kick ins. While Adcock is a good kick, he didn’t really have the required penetration, and the opposition were able to set a compressed zone. But with Drummo able to hit players on the chest with flat 60 metre passes, suddenly there were a lot more options open, which allowed us to instigate some quick ball movement.
Josh was playing the quarterback role (excuse the terminology) which allowed him to cover for a few of our defenders who have below average skills. It was the ideal role for him, as being the best kick in our team he was the guy you wanted with the ball in his hands, and he finished the season averaging 15 kicks (21 disposals) a game. The importance of Drummond was realised when he missed 4 weeks late in the season with another leg injury, which stifled our ability to rebound out of defence. It also left Roe to take the kick ins, and while he was reasonable, he was a long way from Drummond’s class.
After playing fourteen games in 2005, seven in 2006 and eleven in 2007, Drummo will be hoping he can play a full season next year. In terms of improvement, perhaps he can become a bit stronger, as sometimes he can be bumped off the ball a bit too easily. Also he needs to be able to tighten up on a defender when needed, as sometimes his direct opponent was able to kick a few goals. Nevertheless he will go into 2008 as one of our most important players.

The core of the business
3:36 PM Wed 19 December, 2007
By Simon White
for lions.com.au
STAR forward Jonathan Brown is already a convert and now teammate Josh Drummond hopes Pilates and other core strength-building techniques can help deliver an injury-free season.
The creative defender has become a key player for the Lions with his willingness to run forward and find teammates with his raking left foot.
But his three seasons of AFL football have also been interrupted by a succession of injuries, including hamstring and shoulder problems.
Last pre-season, ankle and hamstring woes put Drummond on the back foot in the lead-up to the home-and-away campaign.
I’ve been done all the training so far but I’ve varied my workload a bit in terms of work-rest ratio,” he said.
“I’ve been doing things that suit my body more – Pilates and then also some work to improve my running technique.
“The back-related hamstring injuries I’ve had built up over a couple of years so by improving my core strength, hopefully I won’t be breaking down again.”
As might be expected, Drummond says altering a running technique is no easy matter at age 24.
“The toughest bit is changing your running style when you’ve been doing it for years,” he said.
“But it’s just a matter of developing good habits and the Pilates work helps with that as well.
“It’s not so much changing your technique in terms of how your legs and arms work but more making sure I activate the right core muscles to reduce the stress on my hamstrings.
“Running properly when you are by yourself is one thing and doing it in a game or training is a whole different story.
“But I’m doing exercises two or three times a day to help make sure I activate those muscles.”
While Drummond is working intensively on his core strength, the kick-in specialist won’t begin full-scale work on match simulation foot skills until later in the summer.
Drummond’s ability to pinpoint long targets has become even more important to the Lions since the introduction of new kick-in laws in 2006 which allow kickers to put foot to ball before the goal umpire finishes waving his flags.
“We’re doing our physical and skill development stuff now - we’ll get to the match situation work as we get towards February,” he said.
“That part of the game has changed a fair bit in the last couple of years and it’s probably become a bit easier.
“Under the old rules teams would generally be able to zone off and there was a bit more skill involved in freeing up a teammate and then being able to find him.
“But it’s still amazing how opposition teams are able to get back into position even though you are kicking in quicker.”

Personally, I am looking forward to getting back on the field given some of my frustrations with injury last season.
I’m confident that my injury problems are now behind me after having my best pre-season in about three years. I’ve built my training load up a little slower than in the past, but I have hardly missed a training session.
I’ve taken a bit of a different approach this summer – with more of a focus on strengthening up my body through the core and legs by doing more pilates exercises.
So fingers crossed the trend continues and I can play a more regular role in the senior team this year.
It’s an exciting time for the group at the moment, with a really good group of young guys – half a dozen of which will probably reach 50 games this year.

Revitalised Coast star ready to tackle West Coast
12:00a.m. 19 March 2008
By Peter Gardiner
While Lions key backline player Josh Drummond is wary of the wounded West Coast Eagles, they should be watching out for the revitalised Coast star.
Considered a gifted footballer since his rookie days with the Lions, his physical fragility in the past two seasons is the only thing that has held him back.
But he flies out tomorrow with the top side bound for Subiaco Oval to try and repeat’s last year’s ambush of the Eagles by the Lions with a new inner strength.
Brisbane’s 2008 seasons bounces in to life on Saturday afternoon.
Physically Drummond has been doing Pilates to shore up his core muscle structures that he blames for last season’s debilitating back problems which restricted him to 11 top grade games.
And mentally he has been steeled by these setbacks to hopefully play the season of his life.
“I really haven’t gone close to playing a full year (in the seniors) yet and I really want to do that for the team and see what I’m capable of,” Drummond said.
“I thought we played some pretty good football in patches and it’s a matter of doing that more often.”
He said coach Leigh Matthews given him the same sort of defensive role added with his kicking game that can get the Lions on a roll.
“I really enjoy taking the kicks.”
After a 2006 season plagued by a bad shoulder which required a reconstruction, Drummond was powering in the 2006-07 off season until around Christmas when his back came unstuck.
This time around he has had the physical build up and preseason game time he’s been looking for. “For me it’s not a case of bulking up, but balancing the muscles I use so they don’t get injured.
He said so far on the field his skills have been “a little rusty” but were coming together well enough to give him confidence over in Perth.
Drummond believes the whole team will need to be sharp because he does not believe that the Eagles will be that much poorer without Chris Judd and Ben Cousins.
“People are saying that they will drop away this season, but they havesome good young players coming on.

Lions lose defensive plank Drummond
The Brisbane Lions expect a quad injury will sideline key defender Josh Drummond for at least a month.
Drummond was injured in Friday night's two-point win over Collingwood at the Gabba.
Coach Leigh Matthews says it is a big blow ahead of Saturday night's round three clash against the Sydney Swans.
"You want the ball in his hands coming out of defence, but he'd already had two or three goals kicked on him however, so the other side of the defensive job is defending," he said.
"But that aside it'll cut down our offensive surge out of defence because he does it better than anyone."

Drummond's loss is a huge blow for the club. His value to the team extends far beyond what his modest record of 34 games would suggest.
The former rookie-listed Sunshine Coast product is Brisbane's most attacking defender and the best kick at the club, as he proved with a sweetly struck 65m shot for goal last Friday.Matthews was confident Drummond's defensive contribution could be covered by his replacement, but said the work he does rebounding out of the defensive 50m arc would be sorely missed.
"It's unfortunate. He's such a good kick," Matthews said.
"You want the ball in his hands coming out of defence. It will cut down our offensive surge out of defence because he does it better than anyone."
The coach admitted to frustration at the emerging pattern of injuries to the young defender who managed just 11 games last year and seven the year before.
"Josh seems to have a significant injury every year," Matthews complained. "Medically we try to make sure the players are conditioned but he keeps finding a way to hurt himself in some shape or form.
"A quad is always a month at least on the sidelines. There is either a very bad quad or a bad quad. It is not his kicking leg, but it's a quad injury which is always a significant number of weeks out of the team."

Lions keep faith with former Maroochydore junior
12:00a.m. 12 May 2008
By Jon Tuxworth
Brisbane’s second round win over Collingwood summed up Josh Drummond’s AFL career thus far perfectly.
The former Maroochydore junior was still on a high after kicking a brilliant 70m running goal when he broke down with a quad strain not long after, continuing his wretched run of injuries.
The defender is respected as one of the best kicks in the league. It’s why the Lions have kept the faith, despite the fact he has played just 34 games since his debut in 2005. And why they acted swiftly to upgrade his contract offer when Carlton was ready to swoop last year.
The 25-year-old was at Weyba Road alongside fellow Lion and Caloundra product Daniel Dzufer to cheer his old club Maroochy-Northshore on against Noosa on Saturday.
Unfortunately, that’s all that “Drummo” has been doing lately when it comes to football. Watching. But he is confident that will change with a return to action against Carlton on Saturday night.
“If there had of been a game this weekend, I would have played,” he said.
“Everything’s going well and I’m just looking forward to getting out there.
“It’s been really frustrating sitting on the sidelines and unfortunately I’m more than used to it, but I think the luck will turn.”
Drummond is using Lions teammate Daniel Bradshaw’s brilliant form this season after missing all of last year with a knee injury as inspiration.
“It makes you think that, as bad as my situation is and it makes you feel down, his is a lot worse,” he said.
“He did a knee and missed 12 months and I’ve missed five weeks, so it pales in comparison.
“(Fellow Lions defender) Joel Macdonald did the same thing, coming back and playing better footy post-knee recon, which is basically unheard of.
“It is a great inspiration and with him (Bradshaw) and ‘Browny’ (Jonathan Brown) firing, hopefully in the second half of the year we can build a good platform to play finals.”
Drummond said consistency is the key to the Lions returning to finals football, pointing to their 20-point over Port Adelaide after being behind by 47 points in round four as a prime example.
“I don’t think we played that well for 90% of the game, but it shows if we play our best footy we can be devastating,” he said.
“We shown this year we can do it in bursts, but if we want to play finals footy and be challenging for a premiership, we have to do it more consistently.

Brisbane Lions players Daniel Dzufer (left) and Josh Drummond were at the AFL match between the Noosa Tigers and Maroochy/Northshore Roo's at Noosa's home ground on Weyba road Noosaville.

I have much faith that he will be back.
Considering just how good he is, it is hard to believe that he has only played 34 games. He plays like a 50+ game player.

As much as I'd love to see Drummo out on the park against Carlton as he seems to be saying in the article, don't you think he needs to be eased back into A-grade footy? Like maybe 75% of a game with Suncoast or something.

I think his value is beyond the point where we ease him back into the team. I think we need him there now...

Spot on. Will be eased back with about 50% of a game in ressies before we see him I reckon. Too valuable to risk.

Leigh Matthews says:
"Josh Drummond will be available to play this weekend but it's a selection issue of where we play him. Josh distributes the ball out of the backline better than just about anyone in the competition but he hasn't played for six weeks. He would have played on the weekend if we had somewhere to play him. He's had plenty of time to recover so it's purely a selection decision as to whether we bring him straight back into the seniors or not."

Even if he plays this weekend, he'll have to play every game this year, plus finals to get to 50. I call that incentive :D

It has been suggested on the Melbourne board that we're going to be chasing the lad at seasons end. Just interested to know if there is any truth to him being wantaway or anything like that.
Truth be told, he is a fantastic player and would have him at the club in a heart beat but I think we need to focus on KPP's. Apparently we would be offering a key back man for his services which sounds silly as we don't have the best tall backmen in the league by any stretch. Anyways, thought you might be interested in the rumor but nothing will come of it I don't think.
PS give back TJ:p

Carlton offered him big dollars last year but he re-signed with Brisbane for the next 3 years. Would have thought you've missed that boat.

When Gram(?) finally got a run in the Saints side and made a pretty big impact, m first thought was that we would regret not being able to keep him in Brisbane. But along comes Josh, and you know, I' not sorry at all.

he is always dangerous anywhere from 60m from goal. few times last year we were taking marks around the 50, then handballing off to drumo to slot them thru. its not just the distance he gets with those kicks, but he hits them more times than not as well. is just a wonderful kick.
with roe, merrett and patful, we really dont need drumo as a main defender. he is worth having in the side, just to do our kick ins. its so much better having someone take 2 steps and hitting the chest of a runner 60m out. its those kind of kicks that get us going quick into our forwards, not the stuffing around chip kicks to the pocket that we were doing.
think he does a really good job as a floating defender too.

Drummond's importance to Brisbane was shown in the fact he was bought straight back into the team without having to go through the reserves. His precision kicking from the back half often sets up a lot of Brisbane's attacking thrusts, but the raking left-footer says he's just doing his job.
"My endurance isn't great, I'm not overly quick so Leigh makes a point to work on your weaknesses but you have to make your strength a real strength and make them stand out," he said.
"I don't have the pace to burn blokes off and I don't have the endurance to run blokes off so I've got to use other strengths."

Despite receiving plenty of treatment on a suspect quad, Josh Drummond still managed 19 first-half disposals, including 13 kicks from his radar-like left boot.

But that radar was a little off on a couple of occasions, very unlike him. Still an absolute jet.
