It's a risk if his bicep doesn't heal according to plan (as the squad would appear to be a 'man down' from the beginning), but would the obvious potential positives of taking him along outweigh the negatives?

I'm guessing you could always name him and then replace him.

Of course he should be named even if he is injured, he's a huge asset. One of the most devastating batsmen in the world, bowls mediums or spin depending on the pitch, and is the best fielder in the world. You'd be silly not to.

He has to be picked surely. Imagine if he wasn't and then his bicep injury healed quicker than expected. The selectors would be kicking themselves!!!

roy must be picked if he's a chance of healing.

he's the perfect package and a great asset.

Even if he's doesn't play the group matches and is fit for the super 8's that's reason enough to pick him. We wont have any trouble against the minnows and we'd probably be able to beat South Africa without him anyway.

By the way, I remember when Symonds was included in the Squad this time 4 years ago - Most Australians couldn't believe that the selectors were persisting with an "all-round hack".

He's come a long way since then.

Don't say that - you will set Richie off again...

"...he came in when Australia were in a huge amount of trouble. Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain told him "i want you to be there at the end".

"And he was!!"

Interesting to see who replaces him for the remainder of the CB series and the thing in New Zealand! Will it be another all-rounder type or a batsman?

Don't think you can replace a player that was already injured when the squad was announced. If he was named it would be a huge risk.

I think people are under estimating the extent of his injury, it is pretty serious.

According the news reports it takes 6 weeks alone for the tendon to heal and another 6 weeks to recover strength in the arm. I think this call will have to be made by the surgeon post surgery.

Bevan was in a simliar situation last WC with his hammy, but a hammy is a bit different to a ruptured tendon.

Given he won't be able to bat, bowl or field for at least 6 weeks seems very unlikely he'll be named in the squad.

Yeh, he could very well miss the World Cup, what a blow. Just the lack of any return date worried me.

No, he shouldn't. WHich means that ********er Hodge gets to go to the World Cup. That's just great

I really hope he can prove me wrong and make a score.

They should take him for sure. I would have thought by the time the WC comes around, his bicep should be pretty much healed. The only concern would be the lack of match play, but he's the sort of player that could just walk into the team, and play well with very little game time under his belt.

lets look at the alternatives...

for mine given the players being used in the current 1 day series, the following players are certainties:

Ricky Ponting TAS 32
Adam Gilchrist WA 35
Brett Lee NSW 30
Glenn McGrath NSW 36
Michael Hussey WA 31
Michael Clarke NSW 25
Cameron White VIC 23
Brad Hogg WA 35
Mitchell Johnson QLD 25
Matthew Hayden QLD 35
Nathan Bracken NSW 29
Brad Hodge VIC 32 (i know most of you don't like it, but his domestic form plus the fact he keeps getting called back means he is next in line, the selectors have shown us this)

one of the following 2 fast bowlers will be selected:

Stuart Clark NSW 31 / Shaun Tait SA 23

while i'm pretty sure he will be selected i wouldn't call him a certainty...

Shane Watson QLD 25

that leaves the spot of symonds, and below are the suitable alternatives... do the selectors want to go into the world cup with their 2 main all rounders under injury clouds? and if they can't take symonds, do they want an all rounder of perhaps lesser quality, or just a straight out batsman... i think they will take either hopes or haddin depending on their preference...

Simon Katich NSW 31
Brad Haddin NSW 29
Phil Jaques NSW 27

James Hopes QLD 28
Andrew McDonald VIC 25

katich? nochance neither is haddin to play as a batsman at least, jaques is a chance but i doubt they will pick him because he is very inconsitent. mcdonald and hopes dont got a chance imo, maybe add voges to the list, he bowls abit and was in the test 12

Aussie physio said before the game that Roy's shoulder was worse than anticipated. Bicep tendon completely ruptured and torn from the bone within the shoulder.

Surely any chance he had of playing in the WC is now gone.

Huge loss, Aussie selectors now have to earn their coin.
