Discussion at work today about players moving between NSW and WA.

Who was the great NSW keeper that prevented Gilly from getting a game that forced his move to WA.

Did he actually play for NSW.

When did he make his debut for WA and Aus.

Wow i was going to say he must have been good if he played for NSW and didnt get a baggy green. Then I look at cricinfo and the good old NSW network got him 1 test and 1 ODI.

I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but this would have to be one of the biggest stuff ups in Aus cricket history to force one of our best players to leave his state becasue selectors wouldnt make a hard decision.

Bit like the Vics continuing to pick Mcintyre over Warnie and Warnie going to SA instead of the vics doing the right thing and sending our second rate players to SA.

dicky emery was a good keeper.

NSW had a very powerful batting line up.

Gilly wasn't as good as he later became.

it made sense at the time.

NSW batting line up was something like taylor, slater, m.waugh, s.waugh, bevo and a couple of others...

they could afford a pure keeper.

Rubbish. Gilchrist didn't look close to playing for NSW while Emery was there.

Hindsight is a lovely thing.

Not to mention I think batting on a pitch like Perth for most of the season made a big difference to Gilchrists batting.

I agree with that entirely he just seems to explode at the WACA

Perth suits Gilchrist coz he likes the ball coming onto the bat , and the bit of extra bounce.

We lost that game by 1 wicket. 1 freaking wicket. :(

And the game went for 5 days, not 4.

Good ol Eric Gilchurch

NSW loss was well and truly WA's gain

Gilly made his debut in 1992/93 for NSW

Played 9 Sheffield Sheild games and 2 Mercantile Mutual games before heading to WA in the 94/95 season and pushing Tim Zoehrer out of the WA line up

Actually got booed by the WA fans in his first game for replacing a beloved son in Zoehrer, but it didnt take long for Gilly to win them over

The rest is history

That was the first time we really saw what he was capable of. He'd scored centuries before, but not like this. Bought his ton up with a hook shot for six off Jason Gillespie.

As for the move to WA, I think it's as easy as him not being able to tell when he'd get a chance to replace Phil Emery, while at the same time WA was looking to the future knowing that Tim Zoehrer was in the twilight.

Emery was also acting captain for several years, when Mark Taylor was on international duty, possibly also during Steve Waugh's tenure. That shows the high regard he was held in, and the unlikelihood of being replaced.

I think Gilchrist played a handful of matches for NSW as a batsman, but made bugger all runs.

Yeh, Gilchrist was stiff. Booed onto the ground in his first game for WA, and hostile reception at the 'Gabba for his first Test.

Back in the days when Gilchrist was reserve wicketkeeper for NSW, I heard a very strong rumour that he was already being considered as the likely successor to Healy.

Phil Emery was the Australia test and one day back up wickek keeper to Ian Hearly for a few years in the mid 1990's. (I will be bias and say it should have been Darren Berry ;) )
At the time Gilchrist was playing for NSW has a batsman has he did in first few one dayers where Healy was the wicket keeper.

Gilchrist later repalced Tim Zoehrer in the WA state side and this caused uproar in the State with Gilchrist being booded while playing for WA like he was in his test debut at the Gabba

BiasED. It's biased. I am biased, he is biased, they are biased. I have bias, they have bias.

EDIT: the word bias now has no meaning to me
