Can it be true? No more honey for our favourite bear?

When asked how he felt about impeding retirement Humphrey was speechless (http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,21217562-5005361,00.html)

CHILDREN'S television favourite Humphrey B Bear's future is uncertain, with the Nine Network yet to commission a new series of the beloved bear's program despite a looming deadline.

Humphrey, the pantless, speechless television bear who has been a fixture on Australian television since 1965, is yet to set a deal with Adelaide-based Banksia Productions to commission a new series of Here's Humphrey, Fairfax newspapers reported today.

Nine holds the Australian rights to Here's Humphrey and, under the deal, can repeat each episode three times. Here's Humphrey is not currently airing, but the Nine Network has only weeks left of daily repeats if it does not do a deal with Banksia.

This left the door open for the rival Seven and Ten networks to step in and give the bear a new home.

When questioned on the future of the honey-loving bear at Nine, network chief executive Eddie McGuire said: “We are in a production break at the moment and we'll discuss Humphrey in due course”.

Nine has signed a two-year deal with the makers of rival program Hi-5 and has ceased promoting Humphrey as one of its programs on its website.

Banksia spokesman Stewart Lamb refused to comment on speculation that rival commercial networks were set to headhunt Humphrey, but said keeping Humphrey on Australian TV was important.

“He's been on Australian TV for 42 years and we don't want that to end,” he said.

Humphrey is a big overseas seller. Banksia flies in Mandarin and Spanish-speaking presenters to serve its large Chinese, Spanish and South American markets.

I remember hearing Ernie Sigley tell a story about how one day whoever was wearing the suit wasn't feeling the best and had an upset stomach.

And well the guy had a back passage accident while wearing the suit.

I'm thinking Humphrey was taken to the cleaners after that episode finished.

No not yet.

Here is the press release.

Following animated negotiations, Channel Nine is pleased to announce that Humphrey B. Bear will come out of hibernation to record a new series for the first time since 2003.

While new terms have been agreed upon, Nine drew the line at increasing Humphrey’s clothing allowance for pants to match his vest.

Nine Network Director of Programming, Mr Michael Healy, said: “It’s fantastic that the families of Australia will continue to enjoy what’s been an institution in this country for more than 40 years.”

Creative Director of Banksia Productions, Mr Stewart Lamb, said: “We look forward to continuing and building upon the long history Humphrey has had with the Nine Network.”

Humphrey B. Bear made his first appearance on television on May 24, 1965 and over the years his show has become one of the most successful programs for pre-schoolers in Australia.

The series is studio-based in Humphrey’s very own tree house, right in the middle of the Magic Forest. Humphrey’s house is brightly coloured and magical. In fact, just about anything can happen with Humphrey and his friends in the Magic Forest and invariably does.

This adds to the numerous programs Nine currently has for children on its schedule, including the multi-award winning series Hi-5, New MacDonald’s Farm, The Shak, Deadly, Streetsmartz, Maddigan’s Quest , The Sleepover Club, Kids WB and the recent winner of two awards at the New York Festival, Mortified.

Humphrey will be back and ready to play in new episodes on Channel Nine later this year.

He's on a non-talking strike, it started 41 years ago, I cannot see it ending anytime soon.

I don't think Blackboard ('oh hurry up') would appreciate a pen.
