Great decision to take him with the number 1 selection by both you and the Blues.

I can't express how much I love watching this kid go about his footy. And that's unbelievable too, the fact he is just a kid, entering his second season. He's only going to get better.

Future superstar, and Carlton captain. I must confess I went absolutely beserk when he kicked that supergoal. BRILLIANT passage of play.

Absolute gun, can't wait to see him during this season and many more in the future for the Navy Blues.

Absolutely. There's no doubt that he looks quicker out on the field.

Noticed that with Bentick, too.

You must be a better tagger than Stenglein. WCE tagged him after a blitz in our match over there last year. Didn't matter - still toweled them up.

What has been impressive for me about Murph so far this year (yes, I know its only pre-season), is his ability to lay, and break tackles.
He look stronger, and his performance in these two areas shows that he is.

Reckon he might be a chance of avoiding those second year blues.:thumbsu:

I agree with everything u've said he certanitly is a gun player and no dout the future carlton captain though he should have got it this year:mad: And to think he is only in his second year of AFL he is only going to get better and yet his good now. When people said Judd was the best footballer in the league i agreed and i still agree now but he should enjoy it coz Murphy will soon take his place and will probably be the greatest player ever. Not probably will be:) Murphy 4 Brownlow:thumbsu:

No, played 2 too many games last year, and besides, he was already nominated. Can't be nominated twice.

Murphy keen for test against best (http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/murphy-keen-for-test-against-best/2007/04/21/1176697151518.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap1)
"I suppose everyone sledges. It's not uncommon and it won't be any different this week," Murphy said.

"For us, it'll just be a good test to come up against one of the best clearance teams in the AFL. It'll be a good test for myself, being a young guy, and Bryce Gibbs as well getting in there with Adam Bentick and Kade Simpson.

"You just want the opportunity to play against the best and see how you go."
"But Carlton would be very pleased with what they've got and what they'll have for the future.

"He's a different sort of player to his dad because he's quicker and probably better on both sides of his body. But he's hard at the footy and prepared to go wherever it takes, just like his dad was. Now I just hope he doesn't play well against the Eagles."

But that is exactly what Murphy plans to do today, coming out of the dark Carlton past of last year and into a bright Blue future.

"It's lot different to last year — it's a lot more energetic and when you're winning games, it's always better than any other week," Murphy said.

"You always feel a bit fresher when your winning and that's in the mind as well, so everything's going pretty well at the moment. "You turn up for training and you're just keen to get out there and train with all the boys, when last year, it wasn't the best thing to do," he said.

Had an average game, but he wasn't the only one.

Should have kicked those goals, though.

Pagan played him incorrectly early on, really set him up for an average day.

Oh well, I'm not so upset with him-we all know he will be back to his best soon enough.

Murphy is the guy who will get you 1st use and 30+ touches, Thomas might get only 15-20 but will do special things with it, kick goals and be a matchwinner .
Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft!

It's amazing Murphy was selected with the number one pick ahead of Daaaaale, yet he isn't a match winner, a goal kicker and he's incapable of doing special things. :D

The Filth can keep Thomas and beat off over the flashy things he does until the Cows come home. We've got a bigger and better number two pick who can do more special things and play in more positions than Daaaaaaale.

And then there's Gibbs.

A bit down and missed a few shots he should have nailed, but he's still a gun and starting in the middle in just his second year.

17 disposals - 12 kicks, 3 marks, 5 inside 50, 3 tackles, 1 bounce, 1 critical error, 3 FF, 5 first disposals, 5 clearances, 1 goal 1 behind.

massive ask for a 19 year old to become the main midfielder in an afl team. the stevens injury will affect him more then anyone else, as he's now the main man and the one everyone else is looking too. just needs a few really good games to get his confidence right up and im sure he'll be able to handle the responsibility just fine

Got the same feeling. Once Stevo returns it will take a lot of pressure off the young Murph with the #1 tagger every week. Expect a big year from Murph

Jeremias

Don't expect too big a year. Expect improvement, but not eliteness.

He should perform better, especially with the return of Stevo, but don't put too much pressure on Murph.

Looking forward to another year from our gun.

I agree with the others, I reckon Murph will have a ripper next year... Another preseason, Stevo back into the midfield mix, coupled with Carrazzo's brilliant form and Ryan Jackson's rise to prominence, all will see Murph rise into the AFL's top midfielders!

I reckon it's all about the preseason for Murph. More muscle to stick and break tackles, and his game could really take off.

His touch and class is just fantastic - so often when he gets the ball good things happen. He seems so casual and relaxed when he kicks it forward, and then you just watch it drop into a teammate's arms. Love this kid.

More speed. More brawn. And he'll go gangbusters.

do we expect to see Gibbsy in the mid next year? if he just get moved in then wouldnt that pose another threat for the opposition, thus taking even more focus off murph? if we could be in a situation like WC where the opposition don't no whose the most dangerous that'd be the money.

i personally think we should think about giving murphs the captaincy next year!
i know there will be alot of people saying stevens but i PERSONALLY think it should be marc.
if i remember rightly sticks got put in as captain in his 2nd or third year in 87 and look what happened that year.
there's something special about this kid and i think he could captain us for a very long time, maybe even more than sticks.

Off the top of my head i think sticks was a little bit older having spent a few years in the safl. Don't put too much pressure on the kid - stevens is the obvious choice for captain although after his effort this year wouldn't be too disappointed if simpson got the nod.

Murph will get his chance - just not yet i wouldn't think.

i know that it would be a bit of pressure for the boy but he has showed alot of maturity in handling the extra pressure this year he's had in the midfield.
i don't think simpson would be a wise choice as captain, i would put stevens in before him.But i think murphs is tyhe right man for the job, new look team new look captain!

I know where you're coming from and if Murphy got the job would not be disappointed at all, just not too sure how Juddy would like being led around by a kid. That said, I have been impressed by Murphy right from the start and he handled coping the main tag this year exceptionally well.

Will be back bigger and better next year. Would just like him to have a couple of years without the added pressure of the captaincy so he can really establish himself as the next big thing.

Stevens would be ahead of simpson probably from the p.r side of things at the club - a better media personality. I thought Kade did an excellent job when he was given a go this year. Seemed to lift him to another level, although you would hope that he can maintain that level with or without the captaincy next year.

Either way i will probably complain:D no just kidding i would be happy with either, but as they say if your good enough your old enough, and Murph has definately shown he is good enough, but i think a couple of years learning some more of Juddy boy and then watch out.

Maybe we should make setanta captain - imagine the celebrations then....

Just saw Murph down at the gym today. He looks in great shape.
It was funny. I was sitting on the bench press, and out the corner of my eye, i saw some guy standing there, and thought, 'sh*t, he looks like Marc Murphy.' Then looked at him again and realised it actually was him.
He was a little taller than i expected him to be (i thought he would be really short) but, as i said, looked in great shape.
Then walked out with two descent looking chicks! :thumbsu::)On ya Murph!!!!:D

Not sure why this page hasn't lit up after last Thursday.

I thought Murph did something new for us. He RAN.

One of the few mids (with Carrazzo) who could hold his head up and say he ran his arse off on Thursday night.

After some shaky skills in the pre-season he seemed to hit his targets better........all round a great game from Murph.:thumbsu:

Where's his BUDDY??? :o

Thrawn
28th March 2008, 17:19
Sorry for the delay, didn't have much opportunity review the game again until recently. But since Round 2 doesn't start until the first bounce tonight... I beat the deadline. :p

Murphy played the majority of the game on Thrusday night at a half-forward flank, although he did have some stints in the middle, most of his good work was up the ground. Here are his stats:

15 Kicks
7 Marks
6 Handballs
21 Disposals
1 Goal
3 Tackles
2 Frees for
1 Clanger

What is most notable about Murphs was his hard work around the ground, he covered a lot of ground (15.1 km), the 4th most out of any player on the ground and the 2nd most out of any Carlton player. He ran Newman (who was his direct opponent for most of the night) ragged. Let's break down his efforts quarter by quarter:

FIRST QUARTER

15:51 - Following an impressive display of team work from Fevola, he received a nice handball and kicked the first goal of the season with his first disposal.

11:30 - Kick to no where just before the umpire's whistle is blown.

11:33 - Working hard at the contest on the other side of the ground, his efforts give him a free kick. Kicks to Jamison.

10:40 - Gives off a kick to Waite from a half-back flank, with Hughes as his current opponent whenever he is close to defence.

We see him trying to provide some contests at the 10 minute mark in the middle, where he spent quite a few minutes before going back to the forward line.

2:33 - Showing his crumbing ability, he makes a great pickup near the 50m arc and centres a wonderful kick to Thornton who was deep in the forward line. To be able to do that shows great awareness on the field, he certainly knows where to kick it for great effect.

1:29 - Handballs to Jackson at half-forward

So far he has picked up 6 possies in the first, not bad. Ran his arse off and all his disposals were very good. No sign of these mysterious floaters opposition supporters talk about... looks like they went off with the Loch Ness.

SECOND QUARTER

19:34 - His first mark, then kicks it to Fevola on the lead... and it was a beautiful pass too straight too him, pity Fev couldn't hold on.

18:57 - Handballs to Edwards on a forward pocket.

17:54 - Perhaps his first mistake... tried to centre a kick to Fevola, but it went astray and wasn't really effective. But it wasn't turned over.

16:25 - Clanger. Marks the ball, and kicks it horribly inside 50 straight to a Richmond player.

12:01 - Handballs to Carrazzo in the middle. Good to see him in the middle some more.

10:55 - Marks and kicks to Scotland... Newman having a lot of trouble containing Murphs.

8:08 - Marks and kicks to Simpson in the middle of the ground.

0:01 - Manages to get a kick off just before the siren.

His most productive quarter when we were on the up, but his disposal a couple of times was certainly questionable. So 8 disposals this quarter, which gives him a total of 14 for the game... only one of his disposals resulted in a turnover. Still no floaters in sight.

THIRD QUARTER

15:55 - Kicks to the forward 50, a quick kick from a contested situation in the middle.

9:32 - Kicks to Simpson from CHB... it appears he is working all over the ground rather than in only a couple of zones. Note that he is also up there in number of kms covered, so he is still working his arse off.

7:32 - Marks and kicks to Gibbs.

7:23 - Gets a handball off while tackled, deep into the Tiger's attacking 50.

5:12 - Handball to Judd deep in the forward 50. A shame Juddy couldn't finish it off, because it was a well placed handball under a lot of pressure.

0:04 - Marks and kicks to Edwards.

When the other players were starting to tire, Murphy just kept at it... he clocked up 6 possies and had a hand in some of our forward entries. A total of 20 disposals so far, a decent return for his first game of the year so far. Gee, I'm getting a little concerned about the disappearance of Mr Floater, wasn't he supposed to be here by now?

FOURTH QUARTER

18:27 - Got crunched by Fevola in a marking contest inside the 50m arc. Showed a lot of courage to try to get the ball when Fevola came barging in... I was concerned that he'd done a knee but he only seemed to hurt his calf. Was limping a bit after that but still soldiered on.

9:13 - Kicks to Fevola on the lead from the centre square.

His last quarter was very quiet... due to his hard work he most likely ran out of puff. The Fevola clash didn't help either, must've felt pretty sore after that and may have even hampered his running for the rest of the game. He didn't stop chasing and harassing though, which is always a great sign. Ended up with 21 touches, a fair effort from a player in a HFF position.

I would give his game a 7/10 - was important early on and had some important touches, and was clearly our 2nd hardest worker after Carrazzo. He ran, he ran and he ran some more... and always showed some class, and a touch of courage. He knew where to kick/handball to on most occasions, so he times them wonderfully... and was one of the best users of the ball I thought. However, his workload in the first 3 quarters might've cost him from having any influence in the final - but, with game time this will improve. I would like to see him given more time on the ball on Saturday night... his work on a HFF is still very good but he might be a tad more influential in the guts.

Oh, and not a floater in sight. :p

You missed his most important touch!!!

First quarter:

Roves the opening bounce and fires off a handpass to Judd for his first possession in the Navy Blue.:D

Don't agree... I think Thornton can make a pretty good claim to that. I'll review the Saints game sometime tomorrow or the day after, he's continuing his good form and this time he was on the ball.

Really BB? I'll look at it again just to make sure, and make the necessary adjustment. Cheers. :thumbsu:

Yeh i put him in my supercoach and dream team. The guy is going to have a ripping season as he wont cop the heavy tag with Stevo and Juddy in the side. It will also probabley make him develope as a player better to not having the tag each week, Though if he keeps playing the way he does the other 15 teams might consider tagging him again.

Until Murphy learns to run his guts out and develops the fitness base to finish games like he starts, he will "only" become a similar player to Luke Power and not a Cousins.

Yet he's still the best kid taken in the 2005 draft.

He does run his guts out. Although his overall fitness is a different issue.

Been an age since this one's been updated...how good has Murph been this season? Absolutely loving being of the leash, and is dominating accordingly. His game against the Lions has to be one of his best for the club, and his footskills have improved significantly. :thumbsu:

Should have been in the big V ahead of Pendles based on form this season. Pendles had 2 good games this year and was picked on the back of last years form.

Murph is doing what we expected he would. Nice to see those shots on goal sailing through now...........I can see a bumped thread in that somewhere.;)

Murphy really should've been picked of the Big V, but unfortunatly wasnt. he is one of the BOG week in week out, which is a great thing for a young guy in the team. I think he's looking good so far for B&F this year :D

Hey guys, I've got a quick question about Marc. Was in an argument with a mate and he says Marc is contracted till 2013. I thought that was ridiculous. What's his contract status atm? Cheers fellas

from a outside observer's point of view he needs to work on his kicking skills big time . he tends to be too cute with it sometimes and has a tendency not to follow through

A couple of years ago - all I wished for from the Blues was to defeat Melbourne for the year (had an annoying Demon mate). Seems to me that beating Carlton was your wish this year Hulld. Last time I looked there was a Bumber board - why don't you go back there as we like to keep our Buddy board factual

He has had a great year but I was not thrilled with his game last week. With Judd out the stage is set for Murph to show he IS the A-grader Parko keeps saying he isn't yet

Need to improve his disposal ... Gibbs has overtaken him when it comes to quality disposal.
