A bit about my buddy Shaun Grigg:
Selected by Carlton with it's thrid pick (no.19 overall) in the 2006 Nationl draft
Played TAC with North Ballarat
Played with Victoria Country at the 2006 under-18 championships winning all australian honours for his efforts
Has good pace highlighted by a strong showing at last year's draft camp
Has great ball winning ability
Most suited to midfield or half back at the moment
Arouses me

carltonfc.com.au take a look back at our new recruits.
When Carlton recruiting manager Wayne Hughes named Shaun Grigg as the club's choice at selection 19 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft, the Grigg family, huddled around the radio at the family home in Ballarat, erupted with joy.
But the realisation that her son was heading to Carlton was especially sweet for Robyn Grigg, a lifelong fanatical supporter of the Old Dark Navy Blues.
Shaun and his brothers had followed their father Peter's lead and grown up following Essendon in a 'mixed' household, and while cheering on the arch enemy will never come naturally to Peter Grigg, the transition from Bomber to Blue has been as smooth as silk for 18-year-old Shaun.
"It's been fantastic to go to a club with such a proud history and it's going to be exciting in the future and all the boys have been more than willing to help," said Grigg.
"Training has been pretty tough, but all the players have been really helpful and if you have any questions or dramas they're more than willing to help, so settling in and feeling comfortable and getting used to the routine has been fine."
An Under-18 All Australian and Vic Country representative in 2006, Grigg enjoyed an outstanding season with the North Ballarat Rebels in the TAC Cup.
But it was his performance at the NAB AFL Draft Camp where he finished in the top 10 for the 20-metre sprint that firmed-up his standing amongst the club recruiters.
Initially, there were indications he could be heading interstate as a first round draftee.
"I originally thought Adelaide at pick 14, but then when that didn’t happen, I had talked to Carlton in the week leading up to the draft and I was just hoping to get my name read out," Grigg said.
"You can never really count on going here or there, you don’t know for sure until your name is read out, but when it was I was excited, for sure."
For the record, Grigg is set to become just the fifth person with his surname to play VFL/AFL football and the first since 1921 when ******** Grigg, "as fine a player as any in the land" according to the Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers, played the last of his 194 matches with Geelong.
Shaun Grigg isn't aware whether any of his forebears played in the VFL, but he does have a close connection with five of his Rebels team mates who found new homes in the draft, including the Brown brothers, Mitchell and Nathan who were classmates of Grigg's at St Patrick's College.
"We're real close down there and half the boys were at school as well, we would spend all day together. I think we had four in the top 20 (in the draft) and it's a real credit to the program they've got down there," Grigg said.
"Both programs at St Pat's and the Rebels were very professional and they were more than happy to help in any way and they did everything they could to prepare us to be the best we could be."
At 190cm and nudging 80kg, Grigg refuses to be typecast and is looking forward to making an on-field contribution to his new club wherever he's required.
"I've played everywhere over the years and I can fit in anywhere - half-back, wing, on the ball or half-forward," he said.
"I've been working with (Carlton assistant coach) Gavin Crosisca and the defenders early on but, like everyone else, I don't mind kicking a goal."

My opinion on Shaun Grigg:
Having only had the luxury of seeing grigg at the one training session as well as the under-18 championships, it is hard to make any big calls on him. He definitely looks to have a solid build and from what I've seen just manages to rack up posessions like they're going out of fashion.
In simple French, grigg looks to be a real goer.
Hopefully he'll get a few senior games throughout 2007 so we can see what he's made of. :)

LOL.
Here is a little exercise i did for the phantom draft results thread last november. XXX hope you don't mind be 'sabotaging' your buddy.
Shaun Grigg - North Ballarat Rebels - 190cm, 79kg:
2006 TAC Stats
14 games
Averages:
24.6 posessions (19.1k, 5.5h)
4.2 marks
3.3 tackles
69.3% disopsals effective
Totals:
23 goals 12 behinds
10 times named in best
Not bad stats....compared with another TAC midfielder, Travis Boak who was taken at #5 by Port (granted they are quite different types of players):
2006 TAC Stats
10 games
Averages:
22 posessions (14.8k, 7.2h)
4.3 marks
3.3 tackles
74.5% disopsals effective
Totals:
7 goals 14 behinds
7 times named in best
Grigga's effectiveness percentage is a bit down but one advantage he does have is a high kick to handball ratio. And he has a nice raking left foot, so hopefully this will give him a high hurt factor, combined with his footspeed, we should have some nice quick delivery into the forwards when he is playing off a wing. He also likes to move forward and slot a goal, something we desperately need to take some pressure off the goal kicking load of the tall forwards.

Bit disappointed that he didn't get a game yesterday, but being named in the extended squad shows me that he is doing enough on the track to be considered.
As this is his first few months at the club, that is a positive already, good to see.
Hopefully we see him a few times in the senior team in 2007.

He's one of the picks i'm most excited about seeing play.
Would love to watch him run off Half back, because I've been frustrated over the few years with our lack of pace. We now have guys like Bower, Walker, Grigg, Anderson, Benjamin who are quite fast and i really hope Pagan plays two of those kids this weekend, just to give them a run and see what they can do.

I'm sure Grigg will get his chance at some stage this year. A very astute pick by WH IMHO, and someone that links up well between HB and HF

Why you ask am i posting about Shaun Grigg?
Last night during the 3rd qtr he sat behind me and my friends i went with, he was sitting with a family friend or something like that.
We left him alone didn't hassle him or anything.
What i want to say about him was his enthuasism for the club and players out there last night was fantastic, he was like a loyal and passionate Blues supporter enjoying the goals we kicked and urging the players on in the contests around the ground i have to admit i am very blaze' about the whole preseason comp, but even i couldn't help but get just a little more excited about the game when of the players not participating is getting pumped over the team he now represents.
I cannot wait for Shaun to get some senior footy soon. If his attitude last night is anything to go by he will be be hopefully a long time member of what is hopefully becoming a successful side once more. :thumbsu:

Good story Mentallo. I met his dad at the praccie match on Saturday and I have to say he was a really polite, quiet and unassuming guy as well. Seem like a really nice family. You could tell his dad was very excited about the fact that Grigga had been the emergency the last two weeks and that he was close to senior selection. :thumbsu:

Not your imagination AWG, I've also noticed watching him over the last two weeks that he looks bigger than I remember him being during the U18 champs. Both upper body and to a lesser extent in the legs.

Murph is a gun and was dominating prior to his injury.
Murph dislocated his shoulder - generally a more significant injury than a fracture, but it depends on where the fracture is.
Initially I heard collarbone (clavicle) - if this is the case then great - they heal very well and the shoulder joint itself is o.k.
If he has fractured the humerus (upper arm bone) then the higher the break, the worse it is - if its a break throught the joint (right up the top) then its generally very bad and he will have a very stiff shoulder for a long time.............lets hope its the collar bone:thumbsu:

Gilly is right, JK had a shoulder reco prior to the draft, much like what Murph had last year.
While I don't have direct knowledge of the injury a reconstruction is almost always for a dislocation similar to murph's, which causes damage to the ligaments - which in order to stabilise the shoulder and stop it coming out again need to be "reconstructed".

ok ta. Let's just hope it's the bone he's fractured then, with no ligament damage:)

Yes, and no AWG (or as Gibbs would say - Yeah nah :D ).
If the break is through the actual joint, then given me ligament damage and a reco anyday.
If the break is well away from the joint then no worries, and better than lig damage. This is what I suspect given the 8-10 week prognosis.:thumbsu:

Really looking foward to watching this guy. I was just wondering if anyone knows if he will be back in the VFL next week? Also when we drafted him I was concerned about his footskills (from watching under 18 champs, low kicking effectiveness in TAC cup). Has he improved in this area?

46. Shaun Grigg – Bulldogs
Could well be the youngest player drafted. A running HBF or wingman who kicks long. Doesn’t win enough of the ball, is light and really needs to improve man on man work. A poor final where he was towelled up by Jackson will hurt him, but Jackson is a year older. Certainly the running, kicking, light style of player that the Dogs have nurtured in the past. Take him late this year in a weak draft or face having to take him with a pick in the 20s in next year’s edition?

Haven't seen the whole game yet, just the last Q, but Grigg was great at some very crucial stages there.
Not sure which way Mike and Dan would go, but the play of the week for me was Grigg sliding in under three Port players to knock the ball out to Stevo, took a big hit on the way, Stevo fed it to Kreuzer who drilled it from 50m.
Great to see Grigg playing with some confidence. Stark contrast to 1 year ago.
Great work Grigga. :thumbsu:

Starting to string together some nice footy now is Grigga.
He has shown us the ability to run and carry, but he is now starting to show he can win the contested footy as well.
The handpass to Murph for Murphs left footed goal was a gem under pressure.....dare I say....."Judd-esque".
Lets hope he takes this into the pre-season and really comes out dominating next year.
great work Grigga.:thumbsu:
