This thread is to discuss Ryan Houlihan.

It will be used throughout the season for everyone, and will be the home for his buddy poster.

Ryan Houlihan has had a pretty good preseason so far and has at times impressed the training watches with his hard work and dedication on the track.

An interesting point is that while he's now one of the more experienced players on the list he couldn't get a look in on our 10 man leadership group. Obviously not seen as a leader around the club.

Never thought of that good point. But still a classy midfielder who is a required player if we want to step forward.

The first step in becoming a serious AFL footballer is to look the part, especially in Ryan's case. He always drew criticism for his wispy hair behind the ears action but now he has the short streaked Brownlow catching hairstyle.

Not being flippant here, but he stands out more as a footballer by not standing for his hairstyle. I think it is indicative of a more serious Houla who has already added some physicality to his reportoire last season.

But he always was a classy footballer, and once again an important part of our uniform

He looks smarter, and less like a girl, with his new hairstyle but I don't think its changed his game in any great way. Seems like the same old Houlihan to me.

As for the game last night, he would've been best on ground at three quarter time but a few silly errors in defensive 50 during the final quarter leading to an Essendon goal really hurt the team just when we didn't need it.

Or maybe he didn't want to.;)

Leadership groups are overrated anyway.

Thought he played really well today running through the midfield. He almost looked like a quality player at times.

He is a quality player.

Once again, credit where credit is due-played well today.

Still doesn't know how to man up though.

Kicked a nice goal.

I guess I have a different opinion on what consitutes a quality player then you do.

For mine Houlihan remains a big disappointment. Sure he can consistantly get the ball and play out a game in the midfield but he seems to struggle to make an impact on a game on a consistant basis. Whole matches go by where all Houla does is the old one/two Campo routine.

Standard Houlihan game on the weekend. Did some fantastics things, did some sloppy things, and got absolutely smashed by his direct opponent.

He showed what he can do when he plays in the middle and pushes into the forward line

He is a great finisher, needs to be played like that more often.

BOG ground for mine if you forget the fact the he was playing on Kane Cornes who was arguably Ports best player.

Houli continues to impress me. He kicked 3 from the same spot so hopefulyl he gets more shots from there.

Yep

K Cornes was rotating on Carrazzo and then later on Russell went onto K Cornes

The important thing is that when Hoops WAS on Korns in the first Q, Hoops hurt them, Kornes didn't hurt us.
He got into dangerous positions on an unaccountable half back........might just play a forward tag on Hodge if he starts back this week.......to try the same.

Great finishing.........well done Hoops.:thumbsu:

We’ve got the Hawks coming up then the mid-season break. What can the fans look forward to from the Blues for the rest of the season?

We play a good brand of footy that's exciting. You can expect 22 guys having a crack for each other.

Sure thing Ryan, it certaintly has seemed that way over the past two weeks, hasn't it

Did the break come at the worst time for our momentum?

Maybe, I don't know. A few guys need to freshen up and most, including me, look forward to the break.

No it didn't come at a bad time, we got flogged before the break, the break should have been handy for us.

(At this point Ryan mentioned a 6 letter word that starts with “F” . When Mike and Dan asked him to repeat it, he denied saying it because he didn't want to be looking too far ahead)

Idiot.

Here’s your chance to get a free whack at a teammate. Any player who has a disgusting habit or unusual hobbies or did something embarrassing.

I'd have to say Brendan Fevola who embarrasses us all just by being himself .

Well now, why doesn't that surprise me?

(Note, Ryan probably said 'we're ****ed' and not 'finals', but didn't want too look to far ahead about our prospects of were we'd finish this season on the ladder)

One of the softer players you're ever likely to see.

He has until the rest of the season to prove that he is willing to play for the team rather than solely playing for himself. If he doesn't show any willingness to do that, then he can **** off. He's playing his 150th this week, so good luck to him-bloody oath, if he wasn't so soft and self centred he'd be a monty to reach 300 games.

Houlihan for a 2nd/3rd rounder....do it!

Anyone on here who knows anything about footy will know that Hoops has been given the hardest tasks this year and has performed them well.

Every week - all players are given feedback on their game and how they performed against the coaches directives. This can often resemble something like a manuscript. For the most part - the coaches have been pretty satisfied with his efforts and how he's performed the tasks given (yes, I know this for a fact).

Like saying Lance is one of the slowest............well duh!

Hans't changed for his lifetime, and won't change soon, so really doesn't need to be re-stated over and over.

Seems like there are a lot of people (me included) who know nothing about footy based your comment!!! Coming from someone who makes comments like those above hold absolutely zero weight....Houlihan seems to be the catalyst when Carlton has a bad game and we should trade him while he still has some worth in the market. As one of the commentators said on the weekend, "Houlihan makes Jordan Russell look like he's as tough as nails"

As for your second bolded comment - maybe that is the reason why our coaching department is so screwed....if this is true (which I doubt) then hope they sack the lot of them!!!

This Sunday at the MCG when Carlton take on Melbourne, Ryan Houlihan will play his 150th match. Not only is it a fine achievement, but at 25 years of age, he becomes the third youngest Carlton player behind Robert Walls and Lance Whitnall to achieve this milestone.

Houlihan is currently the sixth most experienced player on Carlton’s list, and it is sometimes easy to forget that he is just 25 years old. He is also one of only 11 players on the list with finals experience. Houlihan has easily been one of the Blues most consistent performers over the last six or seven years, and it is important to remember that he is only now entering the prime of his career. It is not unreasonable to suggest that his best is yet to come.

Congratulations on this fantastic achievement Ryan, with this milestone you join some of the true champions of the Carlton Football Club and it is well deserved.

Must have been somebody else that kept Davey to 4 possessions while getting 20 himself- all but one effective- as well as 4 tackles. According to all the BF experts Houla's too loose and unaccountable to have done that and should never be allowed to play in defense.:p

Easily one of our best - completely nullified Davey's influence and got a lot of the ball himself.

Has shown this ability before with great shut down roles on Aker and Eagleton.......was good last week vs Black, but IMO was one of our best today.
Davey was a huge danger going in and had been in good form.
Hoops smahsed him, and if it wasn't for a FREAK goal, and a shocking free kick it would have been even better.

Only thing now is whether he can keep it up.
If all our seniorplayers played to their capabilities on the same day we would be a half decent side.
(Scotty, looking at you here mate)
