After 30 games it all comes down to this to see who gets the newest (very ordinary looking) trophy in Australian domestic cricket. Queensland have beaten Victoria in both clashes this season, but since that last victory by Queensland, they’ve lost 2 out of 3 (both against South Australia and conceding a bonus point in one) and narrowly beaten the Warriors in a Duckworth Lewis affected match. On the other hand, Victoria are 5-0 since that game, including the maximum 6 points in their final game and completely outplaying the Redbacks in the 2 games preceding that. In those two games the Bulls won, they had Symonds for both and Hayden for one, while for Victoria Lewis and Denton missed both games and Harwood and Hodge each missed one.
World Cup players have been pulled out of this match by Cricket Australia, with Queensland losing Watson and Johnson and Victoria not regaining the services of vice captain Brad Hodge, but they do get skipper Cameron White back after he was left out of the touring party in favour of his deputy. The home side have regained Gerard Denton from yet another injury and released Peter Siddle, while they’ve only added Cameron White at this stage without dropping anyone from the squad. Grant Lindsay keeps his spot despite having scored only 63 runs and bowled 26 overs for 4 wickets in his 6 games, with 59 runs coming in one innings and there seems to be no reason for him to play. The other omission will probably be fast bowler Darren Pattinson although he’s had a better one day season than Mick Lewis and arguably Gerard Denton.
Queensland’s struggled for contributors with the bat this year this year, with Clinton Perren the standout and Craig Philipson having given good support, while Jimmy Maher’s finally found some form and regains his regular opening partner, James Hopes, for this game. Hopes has been good at the top and leads the competition in wickets. In the bowling department, Ashley Noffke and Andy Bichel each have 13 wickets, but Noffke’s performances have been considerably better. Brant has been very economical in his 5 games but only managed 1 wicket, while first choice spinner Chris Simpson has done very well with the ball replacing Nathan Hauritz. Hopes returns for Ryan Broad in the only change to the squad that conceded a bonus point to South Australia. Nathan Reardon was 12th man in that match and with the return of Hopes to bolster the batting and bowling there doesn’t appear to be any need to bring him back here.
