View Full Version : How long will Gilchrist go on for?
just maybe

To me it looks like Gilly is sadly on the wane.
His consistency is gone. He can still produce blasting cameos, but not with any regularity now and certain weaknesses have been exposed.
He seemingly gets 'tired' more often, is increasingly focused on family and carries a heavy workload in general.
Will Gilly go in the next 12 months? Can he maintain a full workload? Could he recapture a few years of batting form with Haddin coming in to take the gloves and Gilly playing as a pure bat?

He's been finished for over a year now. I was hoping last year but it looks to be after this WC.
Both.
:thumbsu:
Time is right too, family is a bigger priority for him now and this is being reflected by his performances this summer. The writing is on the wall I hope he bothers to read it.
Batting was generally poor, with the exception of a couple of quickfire slogathons.
Glovework started off pretty clean at the beginning of the summer but also fell off.
He has been too good a player for Australia to potentially damage his reputation by hanging around too long. We have an adequate replacement ATM so the time is right.
The main reason I want him to retire is to get him in the commentary box. His on field commentary stint during the Twenty20 was articulate, insightful and funny.
Sign him up Eddie!

So you don't believe in playing him as a pure bat?

Are you talking ODI or tests also?

So you don't believe in playing him as a pure bat?
No way. Haddin would be a better option in batting alone.

Where would he field if didn't wear the gloves?

Well he has played as many ODIs as any other Aussie since the last world cup, so given his role in the team I'm not surprised he needs time off.
As in a previous post of mine, the 5 Aussies that have played the most ODIs since the last world cup are either injured (RP, MC, BL, AS) or fatigued (AG).
I doubt this is a complete coincidence.
So you don't believe in playing him as a pure bat?
No, he should retire.

Gilly shound not retire right now, anyone could see that, he will retire at the end of our season next year though.
Gilchrist has run his race. This should be his swan-song.
He really hasn't done anything for 3 years apart from a few cheap runs against tired attacks when the game's in the bag.
Haddin is by far the superior player now and has been for 3 years.
Having said that, Gilchrist is still good on his day (which are few and far between now) and his glovework is excellent and has more of a presence behind the stumps.

He isn't finished yet, he'll be a solid performer at the WC and probably win us a couple of games with the foundation he'll set.
Having said that, I expect him to retire from ODIs following the World Cup, and Tests after the 07/08 Home series.

IMO, Gilly should retire from ODI's after the world cup ... but keep playing on in tests. This will give Haddin a similar grounding that he had.

He is on the slide, probably the end of next summer's Tests.
Then it's Haddin-time.

Spot on.
And people shouldn't write him off, he could have a huge world cup now he's had some time away to recharge his batteries.
Only 2 months ago he hit the 2nd fastest test century ever, so he hasn't "lost it".

Gilly should retire from ODIs after the world cup then he should just continue with tests for a couple years more. I think if he retired from ODIs then he would play a lot better cricket due to a lot more rest periods and time with his family.

I'd like to see him go out after the WC, especially if we win the tournament. Either way, he should hang up the gloves after the WC.

Until he's ready to retire. I don't think he will tour overseas with the Australian Team after the West Indies. So next summer is fitting in that we host 2 Test series against Sri Lanka and India and then the Triangular ODI series.
Haddin should be called up to fill the role for the meantime, but I'm not going to rule out anything at the moment. Ronchi and Paine are "in the mix" if they do everything right in the months ahead.

As I said before...WTF:eek:
Never has been, never will be.
How unappreciated can Gilchrist be? His output has dropped below his own phenomenal standards but even now is still greater than any other keeper/batsman we've had or are likely to have.
A poor series for Gilly and he averages 35 with the bat and gets lambasted. Healy averaged 27.39 (tests) over his entire career and Haddin goes at 40.43 (first class), 25.94 (ODI) and 31.49 (ODD). Gilly at his worst has Haddin covered at his best.

It does surprise me how a legend of the game is so maligned.
I still maintain he's been our best ODI bat ever.

Thanks Gilly. You're a champion and a hero. You set the bar so high that ingrates based your own form against yourself, which was always going to be hard to maintain. Never the less, you were always the best keeper/batsman in the world and proved once again to never write off the champions.
To all those that knocked Gilly, appreciation and apology time is here.

ROFL AB was told he was too old when he averaged I think 40 something in his last series...
I dont think Mark Waughs career ever got above 40...
sometimes players are harshly judged by their own standards and not by those around them.
Plugger/dunstall/ablett would kick 6 goals and was 'beaten' someone else would kick 5 and get 2 brownlow votes and get endless pages of raving...
Gilchrist IMO is in that category, he set the bar so high (his test average was in excess of 60 for the first couple of seasons) that anything less is now judged to be a failure...
It does surprise me how a legend of the game is so maligned.
I still maintain he's been our best ODI bat ever.
Especially since he has royally silenced them a number of times....everyone knows how he plays.
No better entertainer....and never a better keeper/batsmen to take the field.
