View Full Version : Pick a Young Gun for your list

MadMaxx
26 Feb 2007, 13:11
Ok, here is 20 young guns from the league. Hypothetically, pick one to steal for your team. DO NOT PICK THE PLAYER FROM YOUR TEAM. I am making this a public poll, so we will all see.

Chris Knights - Adelaide
Justin Sherman - Brisbane
Marc Murphy - Carlton
Bryce Gibbs - Carlton
Dale Thomas - Collingwood
Pat Ryder - Essendon
David Mundy - Fremantle
Tom Hawkins - Geelong
Lance Franklin - Hawthorn
Grant Birchall - Hawthorn
Andrew Swallow - Kangaroos
Jesse Smith - Kangaroos
Matthew Bate - Melbourne
Danyle Pearce - Port
Brett Deledio - Richmond
Jason Gram - St Kilda
Nick Malceski - Sydney
Beau Waters - WCE
Shannon Hurn - WCE
Ryan Griffen - WB

A few points.

* There were 20 options for the Poll. 4 Teams got 2 entrants where it wasn't clear cut in my eyes. Carlton, Hawthorn, Kanga's and WCE

* I have hesitantly put Mundy in for Freo. He is definatly a good player (in the making) but at 22 it i tough to call him young. There were no other obvious choices for mine.

FWIW Sherman for me. Love the attack on the footy.

McLean?

DOH! Apologies to all Demon Fans. I knew i would miss an obvious. I DO like Bate, but McLean is the obviously higher talent.

If a Mod sees this soon, can they please edit the poll to change bate to McLean.

Franklin because we have Gibbs, Russell and Walker who are the same size as Griffen who would be my second choice.

No Brock Mclean? :D

I don't consider Malceski and Swallow to be young guns just yet and I'd have Cooney and Walker on this list ahead of them.

Sorry about that.

While you're at it you can get rid of Bryce Gibbs. How can a guy who has never played a game be considered a young gun? A "young gun" would surely have to have at least 5-10 games under his belt.

The Zebra
26 Feb 2007, 13:41
Tough between Deledio, Griffen and Franklin.

Franklin will be the most devastating, but Griffen and Deledio are more of a chance to consistently contribute.

I'll go Griffen - just - an absolute sure bet gun.

I don't consider Malceski and Swallow to be young guns just yet and I'd have Cooney and Walker on this list ahead of them.

I would have both of them in a young guns thread. Cooney is becoming an established player and Walker shouldn't be within 10 miles of a "young gun" thread. Serviceable player at best.

Kinights? Who? Porplyzia form the crows is better.

Smith form the Kangaroos hasn't shown much, and shouldn't know out a Pendlebury, Simpson or Raines out of the 20.

McLean's an obvious miss. So is Cooney who is better than more than half of those players. Good concept, but needs some fine tuning.

I honestly believe Delidio is either the best or one of the best, but barring that, I choose Griffen, oozes class. Murphy and Franklin aren't far behind.

I chose Gibbs on reputation, although could easily have gone for Griffen or Pearce.

If he were an option, I would have taken Leuenberger above all the others, because Collingwood is in desperate need of a ruckman.

Plenty of Bomber youngsters you could have chosen over Ryder. Monfries and Johns woulda been my choices for the poll.

26 Feb 2007, 13:58
Some good players there. I really like KPP players, even though we have drafted tall past few years, so I was tempted to go with Hawkins (assuming the wraps are accurate).

In the end though I voted for what I think the Hawks need to add to their team - pacy, skilled midfielders = D Pearce.

Could have gone with Gibbs or Murphy but haven't seen enough of either yet. I really like Ryan Griffen too, but perhaps he isn't exactly what we need.

Walker? HAHA

Swallow's kicking is suspect in the greater footballing community, yet its about 100% better than that of Walkers. You then add to that, 50% of Swallows possies are contested in the guts.

Swallow >>>> Walker

He is easily one of the best young inside midfielders in the competition and probably in the best 5 players drafted in 05'.

Smith hasnt shown much because if you watched Melbourne vs NM in the nab cup last year you would know what had happened to him. His still recovering from it.

26 Feb 2007, 17:29
Since our midfield is loaded with talent I would go for Buddy. He will be a superstar, and whoever says he wont and hes over rated should go and follow a different sport. If we had him, we would surely be in the top 2 for the flag this year, rather than being a possible top 4 team.
Watch him this year, he will blow the competition away.

Spot on, with Hawkins or Gibbs a possibility, but unlikely due to the fact they are untried.

Franklin.

26 Feb 2007, 20:25
I'd take Marc Murphy, the class midfielder that we need to go with our hard workers and aboriginal speedsters. I love the way Griffen plays though.

Mofra
26 Feb 2007, 20:27
Franklin - Murphy & Gibbs may be better midfielders, Hawkins may end up as a better KPP (although untried), but Franklin will be the most difficult match-up.

Given the fact most teams have a few stars anyway, I went for the most difficult match-up. He will gain consistency over the next few years as well, making him an essential part of pre-match planning for any game against the Hawks.

Yep. Sorry again about McLean. If I could have edited the Poll, he would be in. Bate played well last night, so stuck in my mind.

Regarding Gram, look at the Saints list. It has been a few years since they turned over any gems. Was slim pickings to be frank.

I has the record from the weekend in front of me. Handy as it has full lists for all teams.

You're right about St Kilda, that's why they need to make a big move and quickly or it will be rebuilding stages all over again for them.

The Clarke brothers could prove to be very poor picks in the long run imo

The Saints still have Ball, Dal Santo, Reiwoldt, Kosi, Fisher, Goddard, Gram, Maguire and Montagna - all are 24 or under.

Plenty of young quality there. It will hurt the when Gehrig and Harvey go, but with the above core players they won't have to restart a rebuild process any time soon.

yeah Ryder just needs developing but could be something very good in the future.

Johns showed lotsa potential last season in the absense of Lloyd...hope he takes the next step this year.

Either one of Griffen, Murphy and Franklin.

27 Feb 2007, 10:20
I went with David Mundy as he is the best defender on the list and defence is the biggest issue at Hawthorn at the moment. Beau Waters would be next.

I don't believe that these two are the best players on the poll, however as MadMaxx stated what player would you want for your team. What can Hawthorn achieve in having another midfielder at the expense of a quality defender?

I am not convinced re Johns. Will be 23 this year. Is pretty old to still be waiting for his potential to deliver.

Of interest, do any non Bomber supporters rate him?

We've already got Fevola, Whitnall and a future young gun in Kennedy for our forward line, and you can never have enough midfielders, so I'd have to go Griffin over Franklin.

Griffin at this stage.
By end of this year could be Buddy.
By end of year after it could be tomahawk. ( i'm hoping it's Pendlebury )

Deledio can play footy, no question... I would love him, but I picked Gibbs because even if Gibbs isn't has good he looks to have leadership material and is tougher.

Deledio's only weakness at this stage is he seems to have little or no leadership ability which means he might end up a bit of a downhill skier.

Typical Richmond is the easiest statement here, but I hope for their sake his early showings aren't a true indication of the type of player he might become.

Cant believe nobody chose Waters. Absolute gun player. Probably the best player on the list.
