View Full Version : Please Explain The Mentality Of A Crow?
I know this must seem like a troll but i am just bewildered by the mentality of adelaide crow supporters. Since {most of you guys live in S.A} I was wondering what has made them so hostile towards everyone. You try to have a sensible conversation with them and they seem to just bring it down to the gutter. Now this is not all of them but a good 95%. All clubs have idiot supporters but adelaide just blow me away. I have been in big footy for months and they seem to have a massive chip on their shoulders. please explain!?

They have a fragile psyche.
They are not proud of their origin, basically because they were beget of lawyers and court cases.
Their childhood has been littered with angst, Modra, Jarman, Rehn, Pittman, Cornes, McDermott, McGuiness, Shaw, Ayres, Blight, Hodges, initial squad members organizing BBQ's for teammates, and having their officialdom crush those effots, press paranoia, attempts to dictate who can and cannot be a journalist, Ricciuto, Goodwin, Johncock, Bassett, Smart, Gilligan, Angwin, Williams, ............ need I go on?
In response to your query - it's a bit sad really.
Considering how we always get reminded that they have the most supporters, members, money, facilities etc and that the PAFC is a new club, no history, no supporters, no money, poor coaches, always losing our support staff etc - yet we beat them more often than not and over the 2002-2004 period they were not within a bull's roar of Port.
Obsession, denial, chip-on-shoulder, annoyance, anger, frustration, jealousy etc - I'm not sure how to define it - perhaps it is a bit of all of the above.

Reaction formation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_formation)(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
In Freud's psychoanalytic theory, reaction formation is a defense mechanism in which anxiety-producing or unacceptable emotions are replaced by their direct opposites. This mechanism is often characteristic of obsessional neuroses. When this mechanism is overused, especially during the formation of the ego, it can become a permanent character trait. This is often in those with obsessional character and obsessive personality disorders. This does not imply that its periodic usage is always obsessional, but that it can lead to obsessional behavior.
Put simply, they wish they were us, but they're not. So they're completely overwhelmed by the emotional dissonance.

Here is my spin on things.
When the Crows first came into the comp in 91(a year after the comp began mind you:rolleyes: )
Adelaide was a dead ,cold colourless place and the Crows gave the masses hope of some sort of belonging and future.
All of a sudden it was the "in thing" to join up with the crows and get along to the games together as Adelaide had nothing else to offer.Although they stole the Schutzenfest from Hahndorf:(
Many yuppies and people who knew absolutely nothing about Sport let alone football jumped on the bandwagon of"Go Crows go"Unfortunately a large percentage only new "here we go here we go here we go Camry Crows here we go"They didn't know the rules of the game and yelled obscenities to all that would listen and then turn around and say"why is he getting a kick? His equally stupid Mrs(normally 1st cousin or sister) who knew more about her incestual parentage replied'I dunno Bro?"
When knowledgeable supporters abused them they resorted to gutter moronic tactics of claiming they were the club for all South Australians which they still believe to this day.
It may take generations to breed out the in breeding

here is some things that might try and explain the mentality of a cows supporter (i am sure others can add to this)
-
- After one game cow supporters are talking about hand have started a thread on Griffins brownlow odds ????
- They think that Goodwin should get off with out a warning if that (you should & can bet on that) he can never do any wrong... Port do so much more than us (you cant blame our players)
- The cows with no club history (no longer than 15yrs) should be the premier team in the league (no mater what)
- We all hate Port because they have a club history; they have a good winning % against our SANFL teams. But that doesn’t count against us.
- We have 2 premiership cups the Power has 1 (so we are better and we are the best we are in front with premierships which is important) Although they Power has also has 2 Pre season trophies, about 16 Showdown trophies, 3 trophies for finishing 1st trophies in the league and we have a 65% winning percentage which is better than the crows (but all this doesn’t count we are still the best)
- We have a shed and the Power has a club (club rooms)
- Last year (2006) for our heritage game we had every SANFL club colours on our jumper (including Ports) it is our league it is our History (although the Adelaide club has folded 3 times in SANFL History but that isn’t us)
- In the last few years we have hired staff that has been at Port like Stewart (and others) because we are the best but we want to be like them
i am sure others can add to this

In the long long ago dream time the world was ruled by the Magpie and all of the other animals bowed down to him. The Magpie was powerful and conquered other worlds where he ruled with justice and fairness. Some of the other animals who dwelt in the darkness and rummaged in the filth became jealous of the Magpie, and they joined together to try to thwart the domination of the mighty Magpie. The small-minded denizens of the dark places came together in the form of the Crow and travelled to the only land not ruled by the Magpie and sought to dominate that land with terror and injustice. The Magpie took one of its feathers and used a mighty storm to transform it into a lightning bolt, which the Magpie then hurled into the land where the Crow had spread his corrupt influence. The power of the lightning bolt utterly defeated the Crow and cast him down, back into the darkness where he lurks even now plotting and scheming against the mighty Magpie and his magnificent, shining lightning bolt.

What a great creation myth. Every child should get a copy of this with his or her first membership. Really. Who can do illustrations?

Yes lovely work Count Zero.
This is nothing like as elegant as your creation story but it's worth noting that after the nightmare year of 2004 the Crows had 18 months of footballing sunshine. They didn't lie awake at night worrying about the next Port flag and instead could fantasize about their own.
Two chokes and a showdown loss later they are now faced with the prospect of the Dark Riders from Alberton stalking them again.

What a well written 100 per cent accurate piece
our record against collingwood and port power is hopeless

Thanks Noddy. I got a bit carried away with my own hyperbole. Talk about overblown. I think that I was trying to do something with myth and metaphor to explain stereotypes, and have some fun.

To be serious for a minute it is a excellent piece IF i was a port supporter i would frame it and hang it on the wall :thumbsu:

Apparently he's the best player of AFL footy that has ever been born

You sure you are a Port supporter ?? ;)
Hi port fans how are you i am j_mac and i posed a question to all of you a few weeks ago about the mental stability of adelaide crow supporters. Thank you for responding it has been enlightening. But what i have learnt most is from the crows fans themselves. SURPRISING I know! But what I have learnt from here and abroad is that they really are dissilusioned ( i think thats how you spell it)mob craving for attention and a place to feel welcomed. some have severe social disabilities and poor hygiene. I know thats not nice but you gotta call it as you sees it. anyway good luck there with your neighbours and don't be too hard on them they are a little special.
