View Full Version : Like the band or the song?

Just reading the thread about SOAD and that got me thinking...

Are you normally a fan of the band, or the song? Now, I do love particular bands more than others but I would say that for me, it's all about the songs. If a band/artist I liked produced a sub-par song, I'm not afraid to say so. The other way also applies, there are bands that I'm not so keen of in general, but I will like certain songs. If, for example, Britney Spears had a decent song, I wouldn't deny that just because I think she's just a large pair of breasts with a creaky voice blu-tacked on as an afterthought (for the record, IMHO her first song was great - it's just unfortunate that they were ALL like that afterwards. anyway).

I still think My Heart Will Go On was a decent enough song that was mauled by funereal production and The Voice From Hell. Seriously.

As an extension of that... I don't really give a stuff whether the players are virtuosos on their instruments or have magnificent voices. That's nice, but not worth a thing if the songs are rubbish. Who cares if Green Day only ever knew 3 chords? I liked the songs - good hooks and nice energy.

Where was I going with this again? maybe I should go to bed.

Same. Last Kiss sucked. Incesticide is an ordinary album. God Radiohead have got weird lately, but I still like 'em.

Im not afraid to say if one of my favorite bands records/songs sucked. (eg. Fear Factory - half of digimortal...Korn - Cameltosis)
What gets up my nerve is people that say they love a band...when relaly they only love the song. They wouldnt know 3 other songs by the same band so why say they love the band?
Generally speaking, if i love a song from a band ive just heard...ill most likely like a lot more songs from them too, so ill go and buy the album and check it out.

-this goes a bit of topic but..

sometimes so-called fans just say they love a band cos a certain member is 'hot', cute, gorgeous etc. i hate that! they don't appreciate the music or the band as a whole and that really p*sses me off.
sorry i just wanted to get that out of my system :o :)

anyway..
i can't really say i like a band after hearing only one song..bit hard to judge them on just that. it takes a couple more listens to other songs for me to actually like them.

Yeah, I agree. A couple of years ago I started getting into Tom Waits and Happy Mondays, and Shaun and Tom must be the UGLIEST guys in music. And Shaun can't even sing properly, but I still love em. What does that make me???? :)

usually if it's the first song i hear from a band.. i jsut like the song, coz you can't judge a band from one song.. but once i hear other songs (and like them) then i can say i like the band

I cant really say that there is any band in the world that im a huge fan of.

Theres only one artist im a huge fan of and thats Kylie Minogue, and i aint afraid to admit that i think 80% of her stuff is grouse!!

I usually hear a track and then look at what other songs the band has to offer.

I got the Ministry of Sound Chillout Session Vol 2 a few weeks ago, and liked quite a few tracks on it.

So then I got

St Germain - Tourist
Zero 7 - Simple Things

Two of the Best Albums I have bought in a long time

Then from that searched for similar artists on CDnow.com
and found
Lemon Jelly
The Thievery Corperation

As for Aussie Music
I love the older 80's rock
which is pretty easy to find on Compilation CD's

I head Even on Triple J a few years back with their first album and thought it they were pretty good. So when their latest album came out I got the Album based on the band rather than the songs on it.

I guess it just depends, you'll find a song and then either like the rest of the bands stuff, or for you it's a one hit wonder.

I generally like the band rather than just a few songs.

And yes folks, there are actually THREE Beach Boys songs I am not particularly fond of. ;)

I'm a bit confused but I think I'm a 'like the band' person.

That St. Germain album is an absolute cracker, and any of the Thievery Corps albums are sensational !!!

I'm pretty much a band person - but will say if I like a song by a performer I haven't been keen on in the past.

Example: I have absolutely hated Kylie Minogue since she first came out with that appalling cover of Little Eve's "Locomotion" (I liked the original years before). I think most of her songs are mass-produced stock-standard ****e and her voice is no great shakes either.

On saying that, there were two songs to break this mould, "Some Kind of Bliss" and "Did It Again". I really liked these two songs and wasn't afraid to admit it. Unfortunately she went back to the gay-disco-gotta-get-raunchy-in-my-filmclips-to-shift-some-units genre and I quickly lost interest!

I also like Pink's "Get This Party Started" but her other stuff fails to interest me.

I think it's a sign of a great album when you never have to touch the Skip button!!

I agree completely. If I hear only one song I like, then generally, I just like the song. However, if I like at least 2 of their songs, it's usually enough for me to buy the album, and if I love the album, then I'll say I'm a fan of the artist.

When I was younger and more inmature than I am now I would like a band and if I liked them I would like any ol' crap they would put out.

Now I just like the song more. Beside not many bands stay around long enough these days to become loyal to and follow.

Generally go for the song, however if a band I like has just put out a new album, most of my attention goes in their direction
