According to the My Man Thread (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=291068), it looks like it'll be Roughie who's primarily in charge of looking after 'Changa' for this season!

Over to you, Roughie!

Look for Changa to have a big year this year boys! He looks like he has really toned up esspecially in the arms and it has not affected his anaerobic ability as he still has that great acceleration on the field.

Look for him to continue to run and carry up the field this year and look for him to be a real link man between Back flank and to the CHF!

I think this is his year to really be up there in the B & F votes, and hopefully he gets more chance in the centre!

Yep, Roughie. To my way of thinking Changa has his share of unjust criticism.

Gives the team 120%. He is young, full of run and in time as his skill level keeps up with his pace could become the modern day Peter Crimmins.

Spot on! I think his had a great preseason, got some B.O.G's. And Got to captain the team against Fremantle.

He gives it his all and runs hard and is vital to our rebounding from the back half.

When some stories get up about Changa ill make sure I post them up.

Hawks losing winning Chance

April 13, 2007

HAWTHORN midfield player Chance Bateman will miss the AFL round three match against the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome on Sunday afternoon because of thigh soreness.

Bateman was named in an expanded squad but pulled up sore after yesterday's training session.

He has been replaced in the Hawks squad by tall utility Josh Thurgood.

Hawthorn will finalise its side tonight.

Although Bateman admits to still missing friends and family back home, he says that he can’t imagine playing for anyone else but Hawthorn.

In 2001, the Bateman family was struck by tragedy. Chance’s younger sister Candace passed away and he says that the way the club helped him and his family through what was an extremely difficult time, means he is indebted to them forever.

“When you’re away from home and something like that happens, the club is all you really have. They were great.

“They gave me as much time as I needed at home with the family. There was no pressure to come back and play. They were really supportive and just gave me everything I needed.

“I’d really like to repay that loyalty by being a one-club player. I definitely want to finish out my playing career at Hawthorn.”

It’s an experience which Bateman says has changed his whole outlook on life.

“You get a lot of opportunities which come up through your life. I think the key is to put everything you can into them and make the most of it because it can all be taken away from you at any stage.”

As for the opportunity of playing in a premiership winning side, Bateman is playing it cool, just like his teammates.

“To say we’re premiership contenders is probably looking a bit too far ahead at the moment. There’s no doubt that we have a very talented side.

“Looking forward, hopefully we can build a premiership side over the next two to three years.”

CHANCE Bateman will create Hawthorn history on Saturday when he becomes the first indigenous player to captain Hawthorn Football Club against West Coast at Aurora Stadium.

Bateman’s appointment as acting captain is an honour to embrace this week’s AFL Indigenous Round.

Round 9 celebrates the unique contribution indigenous athletes have made to Australian football and role the game plays in their own communities.

In his eighth year at the Club, the hard running Hawk said he was honoured to be asked by Captain Richie Vandenberg to step into the top leaders position.

“It’s a honour and privilege to become the first indigenous player to captain Hawthorn,” Bateman said.

“I am really looking forward to leading my teammates onto the ground on Saturday.”

It is not the first time Bateman has made history at the Hawks. In Round 8 2005 he became the first indigenous footballer to play 50 games for Hawthorn, a goal he set out to achieve after he was drafted from Western Australia in 1999.

His first five seasons at the Club were hampered with injuries including osteitis pubis, torn hamstrings and a shoulder reconstruction but since the end of 2005 he has been one of the Hawks most consistent and important performers.

Bateman has played 80 matches with the Hawks, is a member of the leadership group and represented Australia in last year’s International Rules Series.

Bateman is one of three indigenous players at Hawthorn that includes Mark Williams and Lance Franklin.

Before this current crop, Cyril Collard was the first indigenous footballer to play for Hawthorn. He played a total of 13 games for the Hawks between 1957 and 1958. Northern Territorian Willie Rioli, recruited from South Fremantle, and Victorian Robert Bowden from Robinvale made it on Hawthorn’s list but were unable to debut for a senior game. Djaran Whyman spent time on the Club’s rookie list in 2002 while Harry Miller played 18 matches from 2004-2006.

Chance Bateman has retained his spot in the Hawthorn Leadership group for season 2008. The leadership group includes new Captain Sam Mitchell, Vice Luke Hodge, former Captain Shane Crawford and Tim Clarke as well as new boy Brad Sewell.

Kennett declares Hawks 'ready to hunt'
October 7, 2007 - 7:36PM

Having unveiled a new club logo and new captain Sam Mitchell, Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett has warned the emerging AFL team is "ready to hunt".

Mitchell takes over from Richie Vandenberg, who has retired, and Luke Hodge will be his deputy.

Mitchell, 24, and Hodge, 23, are symbolic of a young, well-led list that made the semi-finals this year.

Three years into Alastair Clarkson's reign as coach, the change of logo is another sign of the Hawks' lofty ambitions.

"We wanted a logo that was bolder, that was a little more aggressive and quite clearly demonstrated that we as a team are ready to hunt," said Kennett.

"This logo gives us that `powerfulness', it gives us that aggression.

"We have two young men who have a wonderful work ethic, they both have extraordinary leadership skills.

"My observation is that their leadership skills complement each other very well, although they are in one sense slightly different."

Hodge went further, describing himself and Mitchell as "totally different blokes".

But the man Mitchell calls "more of a lad" and the friend that Hodge rates as a consummate professional are sure they will work well together.

"He's probably a little bit more of a lad, when he got to the club he probably had a fair bit to learn about professionalism and all that sort of thing," Mitchell said.

"To his credit, over the last three years in particular, since Clarko has come on board, the steps he's been able to take have just been phenomenal.

"Last night they showed some footage from 2002 of Hodgey running around and the difference just in his body shape ... you realise how far he's come.

"I was probably a little bit straighter when I came to the club ... I was drafted a little bit older."

Hodge later laughed at the reference to body fat in his early playing days, but said Mitchell had a point.

"He did have some big hips, but as I said his little poddy gut did go before mine because he does everything right," Hodge said.

"We are two totally different blokes and the last 12 months we've got pretty tight.

"Being vice-captains to `Vanders' last year, we got to know a lot about each other - there's a lot of things that he does well and I don't, and vice versa.

"I'm honoured to be vice-captain behind him because you can't see anyone who does everything to be a professional footballer better than Sammy, right down to the wire."

The Hawks considered a joint captaincy, but decided to stick to club tradition.

Tim Clarke, Chance Bateman, Shane Crawford and best-and-fairest winner Brad Sewell will also be in the leadership group.

While the club spent several months before deciding on Vandenberg as captain three years ago, this time they felt there was no need to extend the process through the pre-season.

"It was an enormously-difficult decision - we did give due consideration through this process to joint captaincy, such is the regard that both these guys are held in by their peers," said coach Alastair Clarkson.

"The players and coaches ... thought that Sam was the guy to lead the club for the next 12 months and beyond and that Luke would be a more-than worthy deputy in that period of time as well."

HAWTHORN star Chance Bateman says homesickness among young footballers is becoming less of a problem with better management.
On the eve of his 100th AFL game, the West Australian says he knows better than most the troubles that can come with moving to the other side of the country when you are a teenager.
“It’s not just the indigenous kids, I think it’s all kids,” Bateman said on Monday.
“You get picked up and taken away from your surroundings and what you’re comfortable with. Most clubs now have got really good player development managers ... transition now is probably a bit easier than it was decades ago.”
Bateman had some well-publicised homesickness in 2001 when his sister Candace passed away and said at the time he wanted nothing more than to be in Perth where he could be close to the people that mattered most in his life.
“When I was back home for my sister’s funeral, I spent three or four weeks there and during that time I thought I wanted to be back home close to family and friends,” he said.
“I asked to be traded to West Coast or Freo and nothing came of it. When that happened I thought I’d get back into Melbourne and get back into it and I just want to be a one-club player.”
Bateman says he is pleased the club now has some talented young indigenous players like Cameron Stokes and Cyril Rioli and says he is mindful that they could get homesick as they adjust to Melbourne life.
“My advice to those boys is that you’ve always got chances throughout the year to go home and see family and friends,” he said.
“Just to get around your club and teammates as much as you can. You feel more at home the longer you stay here.
“At Hawthorn we haven’t had a history of a lot of indigenous players around the place. It’s nice to pick up a few along the way and they’re going to be great long-term players for the club.”
Bateman said he was looking to reaching his milestone in this week’s game against Adelaide at Aurora Stadium.
“It definitely feels like a home away from home for us,” he said.
“We love the support we get down there and the ground is one of the best surfaces in the AFL. We’ve got as pretty good routine travelling down there and we’d definitely look at it as an advantage.”

Chip Le Grand | April 14, 2008

THIS was a moment Hawthorn had been waiting for. The Hawks won and won big. Lance Franklin played and kicked a bag. No-one mentioned Buddy.
Instead, it was Chance Bateman who took his chance to shine. In his 100th game, Bateman was almost the best player on the ground. Brent Guerra pipped him for weight of possession, but wasn't about to quibble. Hawthorn has more talented players than Bateman, but none more valuable.
Franklin wasn't overlooked, of course. He kicked six goals. One more would have repeated the cruelty he inflicted on Adelaide in last year's finals. But this no longer counts as a big day out for Buddy, a scary thought in itself.
If Franklin is the front man of this band - a lead vocalist and behind-the-back guitarist who could have crowd-surfed his way around Launceston's Aurora Stadium yesterday, if he'd wanted to - Bateman is the classic rhythm man; a hard working, tireless performer who rarely strikes the wrong chord.
He is the link-man; the player whose energy and run keeps all of the team in working order.
If there is a spoil to be made, Bateman will be the projectile launched at the ball. If there is a rival to be harried, Bateman does the chase. When running is needed, no legs are more willing. He is not the best in the team, but the team looks better when the ball's in his hands.
Much was made last week of Bateman's Aboriginality. He is the first indigenous footballer to play 100 games for Hawthorn, a club whose previous, unwritten, recruiting policies would have been endorsed by David Duke.
Yet those days and the people associated with those attitudes are long gone from the club.
Bateman is part of a growing Hawthorn brotherhood, with Franklin, Cyril Rioli, Cameron Stokes and Mark Williams. But his standing in the club goes well beyond colour, as coach Alastair Clarkson noted after Bateman shared a 100-game record with Campbell Brown.
"They are nearly the spirit of our footy club, those two guys," Clarkson said. "For the other 20 guys to rally like they did, said an enormous amount about those two guys and the type of roles they have played for our club. They have been such important players for our footy club for a long period of time."

HAWTHORN could welcome back Chance Bateman to the side for this weekend's clash against Port Adelaide at Aurora Stadium, according to onballer Shane Crawford.

A hand injury robbed Bateman of his chance to represent the Dream Team last weekend but his possible return for the clash against the Power should bolster the undefeated Hawks who are without star Luke Hodge due to a hamstring injury.

"I think Chance Bateman will probably come straight back in for us." Crawford said. "I'm hoping that's the case, anyway.

"He'll need to get through training on Thursday. Obviously with Luke out it's a big loss, but getting Chance back in -- he adds plenty of run and has been playing well."

Crawford was eager to praise the performance of his teammates in Saturday night's Hall of Fame Tribute Match, but despite Hawk defender Campbell Brown's pivotal final quarter goal for Victoria Crawford implied that his teammate getting on the score sheet would not be a regular occurrence.

"It was good for Campbell to go up the field a bit, as long as he doesn't get ahead of himself and think it's going to happen every week," laughed Crawford.

"I think all the guys contributed in a way they'd be very proud of ... [no Hawthorn players] were injured so we're all very happy.":thumbsu:

Bateman 'outstanding': Clarkson

http://mm.afl.com.au/Portals/0/images/AFL/AFL%20A-E/Bateman_Rd9_246.jpgAlastair Clarkson says Hawthorn couldn't have won their ninth game for the year without Chance Bateman

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson admitted his side wasn’t at its best on Sunday, but praised its ability to still win the four premiership points in a hard-fought clash with Melbourne.
By beating the Demons by 19 points at the MCG, the Hawks improved their 2008 record to 9-0 – the best-ever start to a season in the club’s history.
But Clarkson says his side has plenty to work on, and says it might not be atop the AFL ladder if it weren’t for a few individual efforts in the 14.13 (97) to 12.6 (78) win.
Melbourne had led by 14 points in the third term before they were eventually overrun, the Hawks having too much talent despite missing several big names.
“We couldn’t have done it without [Chance] Bateman. I thought he was just outstanding,” Clarkson said after the match.
“He, and a couple of cameos from 'Junior' Rioli.
“That terrific tackle and goal in the third quarter [by Rioli] … seemed to just ignite our boys a little bit.
“(Brad) Sewell and (Sam) Mitchell in the second half started to get on top of their opponents, but it was a real grind.”
Mark Williams, like the previous week against Port Adelaide, also stood up when it counted.
He booted three important goals, including two late ones to seal the match. Clarkson was pleased for his forward after a controversial week in which he made headlines.
“He knows the behaviour that’s required at our footy club … I think we’ve gone over that quite clearly over the last seven days,” Clarkson said.
At times on Sunday it looked like it might not be the Hawks’ day, especially after round nine had seen Geelong and Adelaide suffer surprise losses. But Clarkson’s troops rallied, something he says is tough in such a difficult competition such as the AFL.
“We know we’ve got to play a lot, lot better than what we did today … but we’ve been on a high for a long period of time,” he said.
“It’s hard to win back-to-back games, and we had a bit of a lull today.
“Full credit to Melbourne, I might add. The lull wasn’t necessarily just because we weren’t on top of our game. We were forced to not be on top of our game by the good play of the Melbourne footy club.
“For us to finally get over the line was a credit to the hard work of our boys."
Clarkson said he had “no idea” what impact comments made by his president Jeff Kennett – suggesting Melbourne should re-locate to the Gold Coast – had had on the Demons’ opening and their aggressive mindset.
However, he did believe former skipper David Neitz, who enjoyed a lap of honour pre-match before addressing his one-time teammates, had lifted spirits in the Melbourne camp.
“His address before the banner at the start of the game, I could only imagine it would have been a pretty stirring speech. They came out and acquitted themselves really well in the first half,” Clarkson said.
“He leaves a pretty strong legacy, 'Neita'.
“There’s fantastic spirit in that footy club for a long period of time, and they’ll be hard-pressed to replace a bloke like that in a hurry.”
One sour note to come from the match for the Hawks was a hamstring strain to defender Stuart Dew. Clarkson said Dew had become “tight” in the left hamstring – the same leg in which he tore the muscle earlier this season – and it would not keep him out for a lengthy period.
“We’re hopeful it’s just a pretty slight injury," he said.

HAWTHORN'S Chance Bateman says it will take Lance Franklin all of the club's remaining three home and away to bring up his 100 goals for the season.
The star forward needs just nine more goals heading into this weekend's clash with Richmond.

"I would be a pretty bold man to predict him kicking nine goals this weekend," Bateman said.

"I would like to see him get to the 100 and I think he will definitely take the next three games for him to get there."

Bateman also praised Franklin's work ethic this season aside from his goalkicking exploits.

"I am really happy for Buddy," Bateman said.

"A lot of the media talks about the goals he kicks himself but the team stuff he does goes unnoticed. His tackling and his pressure have probably been better than any forward for this year.

"That does not get exposure in the media but it is something we are really pleased about in team meetings."
The talented midfielder insisted that his star teammate would not be nervous about the impending milestone.
“He’s not the nervous type. Buddy just goes out there and does his thing pretty much. He’s really team orientated and more focused on us winning a game than him kicking 100 goals.”
As for Hawthorn’s injury list, Bateman said that Michael Osborne, who has missed two weeks due to a corked buttock, should be available for selection this week.
“Michael was actually pretty close to playing last week. We gave him one more week to freshen up so he’ll definitely be in the mix this week.”
As for his young teammate Cyril “Junior” Rioli, Bateman said that his position on the field means he isn’t surprised that other Rising Star nominees Trent Cotchin and Rhys Palmer are being touted as possible winners ahead of the young Hawk.
“It’s just the role he plays. Palmer and Cotchin play a lot through the midfield and get a heap of ball every week so you can expect that.”
However Bateman tipped Rioli to follow in his footsteps with a future role in the Hawks’ midfield.
“After a couple of pre-seasons, he could move into the midfield. I think he’s got that sort of scope.”

Eight Hawks re-sign for two more

August 14, 2008 HAWTHORN have signed new deals with eight players, which will keep them at the AFL club for the next two years.

The eight players are Jarryd Roughead, Chance Bateman, Jordan Lewis, Robert Campbell, Mark Williams, Mitch Thorp, Brent Renouf and Jarryd Morton.

Hawks football manager Mark Evans said this week's re-signings were a great boost for the club's future.

"It's a strong message to have eight players who are such a big part of our future quest for premiership success all coming out in the one week and agreeing to terms, it's a great message of solidarity," Evans told the Nine Network's AFL Footy Show.

The Hawks are currently second on the ladder.
