According to the My Man Thread, it looks like cschreuder61 will be one of the posters responsible for looking after Murph for us this season.

Take it away, cschreuder61!

Spoke to Tom on the last Family Day.....

Seems that a fit Croady has likely stymied his hopes of a start in Round 1. One could probably deduce that Gilly's great PS form has pushed him in front of Murph and there doesn't seem to be a spot for him at this stage with Gilly, Zac and Croady apparently all up and about, according to him.

He's philosophical about it given he's just ticked 21 yo and realises he may have to wait for an opportunity to open up during which he'll have to keep plugging away at BH. Has been in AC's ear about playing up forward, but to no avail as yet :D

On an unrelated note, apparently there's nothing behind the Zac Dawson music comment in the member's profile other than an old-fashioned stir.

If you get a chance to chat with him, do so - top bloke and great with the kids.

Thanks for the info Motown.

I had been a little concerned about not hearing anything at all about Tom.

I was very impressed with his ability as a 'footballer' last year, had wondered why we haven't seen more of him.

Haven't heard much from my man Murphy. I think he's been pretty solid from the little I've seen and read, hasn't done a lot wrong without being outstanding either.

Would have thought this was the week for him to get a game, but Thurgood has been given the nod.

Hopefully he gets a chance soon.

has he played forward at BH this season, like he suggested to AC or has he been in the backline throughout the season?
it would be interesting to see how he would go in the forward line, considering he played junior footy down there

Murph played a great game today for Box Hill. Must be in line for a call up next week.

Thomas Murphy is selection 33 and has fallen to Shoddy.

Another player viewed by many who may need to step up a bit higher to keep his spot on the list with this fast improving outfit.

Fill us in Shoddy, will he make it??

This year shapes as a make or break year for Tom in my opinion. He's shown a bit of class in the games I have seen him play, however I'm most concerned about his size. He does play taller than his height, however he has to develop more weapons in order to displace any of the others in the back half of the senior team.

Not sure whether he has the mobility, but I believe he should be tried for stints in the midfield at box hill to develop.

Even though I won't be able to get to many\any Box Hill games, rest assured I'll be keeping as close an eye as possible on my man this year!

Murphy maturing at Hawthorn

HAVING played just 12 games in his first three seasons with the Hawks, 22-year-old Tom Murphy has already racked up 10 matches in a 2008 season which is seeing him prove his worth as a regular fixture in the club’s best 22.

He cites encouragement from the club’s resident coaching staff as a key to his development in the senior side.

“Last year I was disappointed that I didn’t end up playing more games (four) but at the end of the year I sat down with Alastair Clarkson and the coaching staff and they and I thought I’d improved as a player even though I hadn’t played many games,” Murphy says.

“This year it’s been great to get games and be part of a winning team. I’ve had my opportunities and I think that I’ve taken them. To have the coaches say ‘we’re happy with how you’re going and keep trying to improve’ has been really good.”

Murphy believes confidence gained from this ongoing support network has been crucial to him securing more senior game time.

“You need to be able to back your skills and take risks. I’ve had a bit more confidence this year to take the game on and play attacking footy,” he said.

“There were times last year when I took the conservative option because I was afraid to make a mistake and wanted to stay in the team. But for us to be a team that’s going to go places and win finals in the years to come we’ve got to be a team that’s willing to take risks. Hopefully I can keep improving on that.”

The 22-year-old defender says the closeness of the Hawks’ young playing group makes for a happy atmosphere at Waverly.

“We’re very close. We’ve only got a couple of players older than 25 so there’s a whole bunch of us between 18 and 24 years old. We all get along really well. It’s almost like being back at school,” he laughs.

But he admits that due to the young age profile of the majority of the Hawks’ list there is a slightly ageist attitude creeping into the club ethos.

“It’s ridiculous really to think that someone who’s still under 30 could be classified as old but that’s just the nature of our club,” he jokes.

Murphy admits that the “older” players do serve a purpose though.

“The older guys will often invite us over for dinner which is good.”

So who’s hosting the next big culinary social event?

“Trent Croad just bought a new house so he says he’s going to have all the boys around for a house warming. I’m pretty sure that he’s not going to cook, I’m thinking his wife will. He thinks it’s a big event but the guys are just keen to get a free feed,” Murphy chuckled.
