Reading through Hawk Talk and the player profiles I've discovered a great bunch of young blokes who i'd love to have a drink and a chat with. They all seem like really pleasant young men. I'm wondering if we aren't suffering from a lack of hard ass, thug types. Enforcers if you like. Every club has a player than nobody likes because of his attitude or phsyicallity.
Gherig is a thug. Kerr intimidates. Who's doing the job for us? No denying blokes like Guerra and Campbell are tough as nails, but do they have the crazy fire in their eyes that can scare the bejesus out of the opposition?

Vanders, Lewis, Brown and Hodge. They don't take cr@p from the opposition.
I think Sammy is way too nice on the field. The guy gets smacked in the nut's twice and just joked about it. I think if he demanded a higher degree of fear from the opposition, combined with his outstanding football skills, his work rate would be more profitable ie players more hesitant to apply pressure. I know it's a new era but i just wish there was a little bit of the 80's installed into the current team. Maybe they need a little pep-talk from Alan Jeans;)

I think we have our fair share of tough players, I don't think we apply enough pressure through tackling though.

I've wondered about this before as well. Do we have any genuinely 'tough' players who strike fear into the opposition?
As pointed out, Vanders, Hodge, Brown and Lewis don't seem to take any rubbish on the field (just ask Adam McPhee about Mr Brown...)
I would suggest that Guerra and Crawf don't either.
The trouble is that none of the players mentioned are physically big in terms of being able to throw their weight around. Are our key position players all too nice? Imagine if big Robbie fired up one day...I'd like to see that. What about Roughie and Buddy - could they find a mongrel streak deep within?
No hope for Zac though - I see from the season guide that his favourite drink is "warm milk"... way too nice.:o
Vanders, Lewis, Brown and Hodge.
They would be the main guys. However, none really provide a big physical presense, like a J.Brown would.
Robbie Campbell is a big unit, and could be one such player...
Theres no reason why you cant be a nice guy off the field and a hard ass on it .White line fever .

I remember someone saying that Zac has abit of agression in him.
If this is true, wait till he has a few more kilos on him.:)
In the same post, the person said that my man Taylor doesn't take any crap.
I will see if i can dig it out.

yeah just keep that warm milk up zac, it'll make you big & strong.. He needs more than a few kilos & "a bit of agression".had you asked this 2 years ago I'de say nice guys finish last, whoops we nearly did. But now with big rob, guerra, brown, hodge, vanders & that dirty lil' brownlow winnin' crawford mixing it up, I reckon kanga, parko & yabbie would all be smiling inwardly at our presence factor.:D:D:D

wow!:o somebody listens to what i have to say! He is a real tough nut this year, and you could see it last year also, but his lack of upper body strength was his downfall. This year he is heavier, and preseaon, he was taking out players left right and center, his opponents were vertually scoreless
cradle of filth

I don't think it's a lack of toughness at all. I would say we seem less intimidating because we don't have many strongly built players. Obviously this is because we play alot of teenagers(just think how intimidating Thurgood would be if he was big) but no one i can think of is soft or unwilling to put there body on the line.

just read this on the HFC website - pulled out the relevant bit
Clarkson buoyed by excellent pre-season
Have you any concerns over the several reports and suspensions during the pre-season period?Clarkson: It got blown out of proportion a little bit. There were five reports last weekend and they were all thrown out. We play hard, tough footy and early in the season there are always a lot more reports than normal.
If you cast your mind back through history and think of all of the great players who played in premierships – (Glenn) Archer, (Wayne) Carey and (Wayne) Schwass at North Melbourne, (John) Worsfold at the West Coast Eagles, Greg Williams or Jimmy Buckley at Carlton or whether you go back to our own club with (Robert) DiPierdomenico, (Dermott) Brereton and Leigh Matthews – they all played with a tremendous passion. They also played with a tremendous hardness at the footy and that's how we like to play.
Sometimes that's going to mean, unfortunately, you'll incur the wrath of the tribunal. We hope that's not often but we play a very tough demanding game – probably one of the most demanding games in the world. We want to limit those indiscretions as much as we can but when you're playing in a tough, demanding environment like ours, there's going to be indiscretions from time to time.
Unfortunately in today's game there's a very fine line between hardness at the ball/opponent and a reportable offence - hopefully we don't go over board.

Better still I hope we dont get caught when we do
