Second round of the group stage wraps up with this one, where only Bangladesh can guarantee themselves a spot in the super eights, joining Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and the West Indies who have already qualified from the other groups. The Bangladeshis go into this match with all the confidence, having beaten New Zealand and India along with minnows Bermuda, Canada and Scotland since arriving in the Caribbean, while their opponents lost to New Zealand and have beaten only minnows Bermuda and Scotland in their three games in the region.
Thanks to that run there will be no change in the Bangladesh side. The best news out of the win over India was the three players who scored all the runs were the three kids – then 17-year-old Tamim Iqbal (he turned 18 yesterday), surprise selection as keeper Mushfiqur Rahim, and to a lesser extent since he’s been doing it for a while even though he’s a few days away from his twentieth birthday, Sakib Al Hasan.
Their opponents got some batting practice against the Bermudans, with Jayawardene getting some much needed runs, his first ODI 50 since leaving England last July. The man he replaced as captain missed out in a lineup including seven batsmen, while playing only the four specialist bowlers was not tested due to Bermuda being skittled in less than half the allotted overs. The team will likely remain the same, however while Bangladesh may still be considered minnows by many, it’s a big step up to make runs and take wickets against them compared with Bermuda.
