Darren Crocker Comment On 2006/2007 Pre-Season
"Has lightened off his weight this pre-season to allow him greater running capacity. A very important player who needs to continue to work on certain aspects of his game, although he showed that he can move from the forwardline to the backline and still have an impact at senior level."

Corey Jones - The utility has played 103 games for the Kangaroos and will remain with the club until 2008, after signing a two-year deal at the end of last year. Jones averaged 18 disposals per game last season and his attacking style should continue to excite Kangaroos fans.

Round 1 v.s. Collingwood (MCG)
Not our best, not our worst - 6/10.
He offered us a vital option at half-forward which we lacked in the NAB Cup loss against Carlton. Managed 2.2 which was a good effort considering he spent a fair bit of time up the ground. Was pleased once again with his defensive game (good second efforts and tackling) which some have criticised in the past.
The only criticism would be his indecision at times which has been part of his game ever since I can remember. A couple of times he had a mark on the flank and held the ball up, meaning Collingwood players could run back and cover any ground that players like Thomas may have been able to lead into.

Round 2 v.s. Port Adelaide (AAMI)
In our best this week - 8/10.
Kicked 4.1 for the day and was easily our best forward. Started off slowly in the first quarter (I saw him a couple of times in defence, not sure if he was there the whole quarter as I wasn't at the game) before playing a lone hand in keeping us in the game throughout the second quarter with three important goals. Kicked the remaining one goal, one behind in the second half.
Given that he played a little closer to goal than last week, I was very impressed with not only how he presented on the lead, but his overhead marking against Chaplin for most of the game who is a far bigger unit.
Not much in the way of defence today, but the whole side was disappointing in that respect.

3/10.
Presented well early and laid an important tackles in the first half. Ended up with 1.1 for the day.
Not much point in analysing this performance as the performance by the whole team was gutless and a forward isn't really going to control the tempo of the game when such a defencive mindset is adopted.

Strange game from Jonesy. Seemed to be around the play a fair bit, but really struggled to immerse himself in the contest. I'm giving him 4/10 this week.
Kicked 1.1 and managed to collect himself his usual bag of frees from the umpires. His good defensive pressure once again shouldn't go unmentioned - really working hard on that stuff this season when it would be so easy for him to just shirk it like so many players of his type do.

Shocking really - could've cost us the game if a couple of things went against us at the end there. Unless it is very wet, players shouldn't go for the chest mark in the modern day. There is only one man in the league who can pull it off (Jonathon Brown).

4/10 is about 3 too generous.
It wasn't just the two simple chest marks, the 25m dead in front miss and just stuffing up two other goals. The 1.1 he kicked didn't really highlight just how bad he played.
He should have kicked 3 or 4 minimum today. We can't afford the senior players playing like that. Had we lost with his effort in front of goal our confidence would have been shattered.

Is there now anyone on this board who doubts that CJ is the worst set shot in the league (and in reality has been for the last 3-4 years).
Amazing the stagnant foot skill development of our players. Exactly who is our skills coach and how is their performance assessed?

Round 6 v.s. Sydney (TD)
Went down to training on Friday and he spent the majority of time with the main group - with the exception of a bit of kicking/stretching with a trainer at the very end away from the rest of the players. Great to see he got up for this game.
Played the classic small forward role in this match against the Sydney Swans. Read the ball off the packs and didn't push up all that much. Not much in the way of defensive efforts or in fact anything aside from his 3 goals - which were important.
Not sure how well he will work with Matthew Campbell (who was outstanding) and Lindsay Thomas, but I'd like to see him push up the ground a bit more. I've given him 7/10 for the round.

KANGAROOS forward Corey Jones says his resurgent side must maintain their high standards against Essendon on Friday night if they want to extend their three-match winning streak.
A win over the Bombers at Telstra Dome would move the Kangaroos' win-loss record into the black, a prospect that looked remote a month ago after the club dropped its first three matches of 2007.
But wins over the Brisbane Lions, Geelong and Sydney - all currently inside the top eight - has the club back on track.
Jones said the players are determined not to make the same mistakes that saw them drop the first three games of the season.
"We had opportunities in the first three weeks (and) I think our wins have been due to our starts," Jones said.
"We know as a group if we just lose that edge or take liberties during the week and then during the game we'll be back where we started three weeks ago.
"You've only got to be up or down five or 10 per cent and you'll get smacked between the eyes."
The team heads into Friday's match at Telstra Dome on the back of consecutive six-day breaks and a gruelling encounter with the Swans, who are one of the hardest running teams in the league.
The 26-year-old Jones said it will only be a light week at training as they prepare to face the Bombers.
"They are a side that are happy, with second and third stoppages, just to set up and start again. They are a hard side," Jones said of Sydney.
"We won't do much this week. We need to make sure ... we do everything right, recover right and make sure we're ready to go on Friday in front of hopefully a big crowd."
Just six rounds in, Jones has kicked 11 goals, halfway towards his 2006 tally of 22 and two behind Brent Harvey's club-best 13.
Jones said he and Harvey aim to each average two goals a game to cover the loss of injured full-forward Nathan Thompson, who is out for the season with a knee injury.
"Brent Harvey and myself had a bit of heat put on us with Thommo going down before the start of the season," Jones said.
"We've got to step up and kick a few more goals."
Should they reach their target, both would beat their previous best season tally of 38 (Jones in 2005) and 35 (Harvey in 2000) respectively.
Thompson was the club's leading goal-kicker with 54 in 2006.

Round 7 v.s. Essendon (TD)
Got back to his early season form for this Friday night game against Essendon. Only slotted 2.1 for himself, but was instrumental for us across half forward along with Aaron Edwards.
On a few occasions last night he played for the free and not the footy, but we've almost come to expect that from CJ (not to say he doesn't attack the contests hard). Not too much more we could've got out of him in this game - I'm giving him a 7/10 for this performance.

One of our best against the Blues this week. Seemed to relish the open forward line early in the game, but even when it crowded a little later on in the piece he still managed to find plenty of space. Presented well and seized opportunity when it arose. You probably realise how important he is for us across half forward when he isn't playing, but tonight it was there for all to see.

IF COREY Jones ever needed to produce evidence to illustrate his growing maturity as an AFL footballer, he could simply point to the video of the dying moments of the Kangaroos' thrilling one-point win over Melbourne at the weekend.
Look closely and you can see Jones bellowing instructions to his teammates to find their men as Aaron Edwards goes back to take a set shot at goal with the Roos up by a point and with little more than 40 seconds remaining.
It is this type of discipline and awareness that created the turnover that resulted in Andrew Swallow's goal just seconds earlier and is part of the reason why the Roos have chalked up six successive victories.
Jones shrugs off the moment, saying he was one of many senior players making sure everyone was on their mettle in the closing stages of that tense final term.
"I suppose you can't have the video trained on every player on the ground, but I know that I was just one of a few blokes who were yelling out for everyone to find their man," Jones said at training this week.
"If Azza missed the goal, we wanted to make sure they had to kick to a contest because we didn't want them to keep possession of the ball and run it forward from what might have been a kick-in. I was just doing my job, really."
While keen to downplay his role in helping his young charges stay on their toes in last week's thrilling win, Jones will admit that he is beginning to feel an expectation to assume some of the leadership burden shouldered for so long by Adam Simpson, Brent Harvey, Glenn Archer and Shannon Grant.
He has been at the club for seven years now - managing 112 games since making his debut in 2001 - and says he can't help but be a better player for playing under and with so many great leaders.
"We've had some great leaders here over that time so I've had a lot of great people to learn off. I don't think you can go too far wrong by trying to put the lessons learned from them into your own approach to the game."
Even more than that, you get the impression Jones likes to think that his time at Arden St is helping him in ways far and above his initial aims of simply becoming a regular AFL footballer. Like many of his teammates he talks of the Shinboner Code, and while he is careful not divulge the contents of the creed the Roos have adopted over the past few seasons, he is happy to reveal that it has played a key part in helping the team on its way to a 6-3 record this year.
"We certainly embrace the Shinboner tag. We have a different perspective on it compared to the general public but that's something we know and we understand what it means to us.
"I won't go into it but we've spent a bit of time putting together that Shinboner Code - I think makes us a better football side but it also makes us better people as well."
Jones admits that the Roos will need every ounce of that famed “Shinboner Spirit” when it takes on league leaders West Coast at Subiaco on the weekend. But like so many of his mates, he is relishing the thought of the Roos pitting themselves against the benchmark of the competition.
"We just have to go over there and throw everything at them and have no regrets. They'll obviously be favourites so it'll be a really good test for us.
"We've had a few wins on the trot but they are the measuring stick so it's really exciting to see where we are at."

One of our best in this game. Used the ball incredibly well all day, ending the match with 4.1 - the behind being an unlucky poster in the last quarter. He was particularly important in building what turned out to be a match winning lead in the first quarter with 3 goals.

It's worth noting at the halfway mark of this season he has already equaled his goals tally from last season of 22 (in 22 games). Clearly, the new game plan as well as some improvement in his own game has helped him double his output this season. Hopefully CJ can keep this up as we challenge for a finals spot :thumbsu:

Nowhere near it, but then again neither was the delivery. At times he made lemonade out of lemons and at other times he just took the lemons. One shocking kick straight to the opposition 10 metres away in the centre corridor during the second half epitomised our night. Just the 1 goal for CJ in this game.

CJ was at his enigmatic best in this match and I'm sure opinions are divided on his game. Managed 3 goals, so on face value he was a solid contributor - he now leads our goal kicking for the season with 28. Again I thought he was leading long and wide, maybe it is an instruction.
Did a couple of good things in defence early in the game too. I opposed playing him in the midfield/defence in previous seasons, but I'd probably be willing to give it another go sometime soon - he has developed into a very smart footballer. Unfortunately, he is just too important for us across half forward so it probably won't happen.

I've noticed CJ is taking alot of advice from assistant coach Darren Bewick this season. The way he can earn free kicks by thrusting forward as an opponent approaches is very much what irratated me about Bewick, very difficult to tackle and more importantly, CJ is skimming alot of frees from these contests. Kicking has improved remarkedly this season.

Darren Crocker Comment On 2007/2008 Pre-Season
"As we all know Corey sustained a stress fracture to the foot during our finals campaign last year and was sent for surgery missing our last two finals. He has still been able to do a power of work in cross training (bike, swimming, boxing). He is also back into most aspects of training and knowing Corey will pick up quickly in the areas where he was restricted."

Round 2, Eureka v.s. Richmond (MCG)
Was easily our best on ground for this game providing the crucial link at half forward. Must have gone through at least 5 or 6 opponents for the game, kicking 7.2 and chipping in with a few assists along the way too. This 7 goal tally equals his highest ever return (from late last season against Hawthorn down in Tassie). The big 10/10 for CJ this week.

Round 3 v.s. Hawthorn (TD)
Kicked 3.1 for the day and really seemed to be our focal point up forward - even though both Edwards and Thompson probably would've backed themselves against their respective opponents. Good defensive pressure from CJ didn't go unnoticed either and he nearly managed to slot a goal on the right boot early on in the game!!! 7/10 today as he was one of our best.

Round 4 v.s. Melbourne (MCG)
Kicked 2.3 for the day. Was dominant at stages, but it seemed the Melbourne defence were pretty focused on him the majority of the time (hence Azza and Thommo slipping under the radar). Once again he was terrific in terms of his pressure. It may not provide him with goals, but when all of the forwards are doing the team thing it makes a huge difference to the end result. 7/10 today for CJ.

2 goals, a few assists and application of pressure. Also took a fair bit of heat off the blokes around him by way of attracting a crowd whenever he went near the ball.

Round 5 v.s. Collingwood (MCG)
Kicked 1.5 for the night - all of which being in the first half of the match. His radar has was off last week and I put it down to the blustery conditions. Perhaps there is more to it? We will find out in the coming weeks I'm sure.
On face value his game was reliant on free kicks, but I thought he positioned himself well in most contests and deserved the frees he was given. Delivery was as ordinary as his kicking, so I'm giving him a 4/10 for his efforts.

Round 9 v.s. Western Bulldogs (Telstra Dome)
Played a little further up the ground which really helped him get the footy. Still lacked in confidence when he had it, which was reflected in him missing shots he'd usually nail, fumbling balls etc. Only collected 1.2 for his efforts but that probably doesn't do justice to the quality of ball he was getting in the second half when the game was up for grabs. 6/10 for CJ this week.

With our injury list, I can't see why we'd bring a player of his quality back through the VFL after only 1 week out of the side.
JYD confirmed today at the pre-match function that he was simply not selected in the 22.

Corey Jones is a very good footballer & is very important to a successful NMFC. When in form, he is a very difficult player to match up on & we have seen him win many games for NMFC. It is no coincidence that we made the finals last year & he had an excellent season. And it is equally no coincidence that we are struggling this season as he is. We simply need Jones to find some form in the seniors & not at VFL level. I'd keep playing him in the seniors & just hope like hell he turns the corner. Who are we going to replace him with anyway - Sansbury?????

Determined Jones to bounce back
By Steve Lavell 11:42 AM Fri 11 July, 2008
COREY Jones doesn't need to hear the knockers.
All the talk of an erratic year, wayward kicking in front of goal, his troublesome foot, time in the VFL.
He knows it. He's lived it.
And there's no-one more disappointed.
Knocked out by the 'friendly fire' of teammate Nathan Thompson against Essendon in round one, Jones remarkably returned to the side the following week for his best game of the season – booting seven goals from 11 kicks in a win over Richmond.
“It kind of sums my year up,” Jones said, considering the contrasting weeks.
Inconsistency has dogged the Roos, with the side’s best football flirting with brilliance and its worst eroding the previous game’s progress.
The round 14 loss to St Kilda, a week after the spirited triumph over third-placed Hawthorn, had coach Dean Laidley threaten to make changes.
And, unfortunately, Jones will miss Saturday night’s clash with Port Adelaide as a result.
“The boys were pretty much in neutral last week after the performance [against St Kilda]. It was very gut-wrenching,” he said on Tuesday.
“I haven’t had a year so far that I can remember too fondly. Luckily with footy there’s opportunities around the corner so I’ll be [looking] at those and taking them with two hands.”
Jones did just that in 2007, filling the void left by Thompson to lead the attack with 46 goals.
However, a foot injury grounded him for the finals against Hawthorn and Port Adelaide and he hobbled into the pre-season, too.
The 27-year-old doesn’t believe last year’s efforts have raised the bar in regard to his performance, but a struggle to recapture that form has been frustrating.
“I always set high standards for myself regardless, so last year didn’t really have an influence on what’s been going on this year,” he said. “If I don’t measure up to that, it’s not acceptable.
“The majority of this year probably hasn’t been acceptable.”
But good news came soon before the break, with Jones committing to the Kangaroos for the next two years.
It was a sure sign of his place in the club’s exciting future and a measure of faith in his ability.
“It was good. Hopefully I can repay them very, very soon,” he said. “It hasn’t been a great year, but … the club’s heading in the right direction. (Chairman) James (Brayshaw) and (chief executive) Eugene (Arocca) have been absolutely fantastic, and [so have] the members we’ve got.
“Hopefully the footy department can step up and help out the other side of the club.”
And with the race to the finals beginning in earnest on Saturday night, North needs to get everything out of its players.
“If the boys can jell together like we have done in patches and get a good run going, [we can] be right up there.
“We know that when we’re at our best, we’re a good side. A very good side.”

Round 17 v.s. Melbourne (MCG)
A 4.1 game from CJ means he has now overtaken Nathan Thompson as our leading goalkicker this season. The fact that he kicked his goals when we were up and about proves what most already suspect about him being a barometer for our success. Lead up the ground and took some good grabs against a very inexperienced Melbourne backline. A good performance on face value, but you have to take into account the opposition so I'm not yet satisfied he is out of his form slump. However, with Edwards and Thompson set to return he should have some pressure taken off him moving towards the business end of the season. 7/10.
