HANSEN AND GOLDSACK POWER 2007 DRAFTEES

Press Release
By Bryan Mitchell
5th December 2006
http://gippslandpower.footballvic.com.au/_content/article/00113751-thumbnail.jpg
The 2006 AFL Draft saw Gippsland Power’s Lachlan Hansen (Nar Nar Goon) and Tyson Goldsack (Pakenham) take the next step in their football dream by being selected by the Kangaroos and Collingwood respectively. Both boys were ecstatic at being picked up and eagerly looking forward to the physical and mental challenges involved at the elite level of the game.
Lachlan was touted as a top five pick long before the draft and, but for the age restrictions associated with it, would have been snapped up early in the 2005 draft along with fellow Power players Dale Thomas, Xavier Ellis and Scott Pendlebury. He had a glittering career with the Power and excelled at national championships at under 16 and 18 levels where he won dual All-Australian selection.
The hallmark of his game is his ability to take marks in contested situations and took over 15 such marks in several games in 2006. Lachlan thrived on taking on the oppositions best player in the key defensive post or when swung up forward or into the ruck. His mobility and agility made him almost impossible to counter as few players have this unique blend of football attributes and the skill to stick with him for a full game.
In stark contrast to Lachlan’s pathway to the big time Tyson has literally gone under the radar to find his place in the AFL. In his first season with the Power in 2005 as a top-age player he managed 10 games but impressed with his athleticism and versatility and due to this was able to play again in 2006 as a nineteen year-old.
His willingness to go to the next level saw him become a key player for the Power this season and he played in a wide variety of positions with telling effect. He too can take a strong contested mark and has the pace and skill to generate run all over the ground. Tyson will not be the instant AFL success that many predict as Lachlan’s path, but once he gains a little strength, he will make his own special and emphatic mark on the game.
While the club celebrates the success of both boys, several of their team mates are looking to take their own steps towards the big time. The up-coming rookie draft will hopeful give some of them an immediate entry into the AFL and they will be inspired by former team mate Craig Flints’ achievement of being elevated to Carlton’s senior list after one year as a rookie. If this avenue isn’t available, many of the boys will be in demand by VFL teams and their long term dream remains well and truly on target

Profile: Again, the Kangaroos cannot lose with their first selection, as they will either gain Hansen or Gumbleton - with Leuenberger also coming into calculations. But the Roos have been eyeing off both Hansen and Gumbleton, hoping to snare a key position player that will spend the next decade in the royal blue and white. Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley is believed to be a massive fan of the boy from Nar Nar Goon and should Gibbs and Gumbleton be taken, expect recruiting manager Neville Stibbard to read Hansen's name out. Should the Dons take Leuenberger and the Roos claim Gumbleton, then Hansen could be headed for the Lions or Power.

Highlights/achievements: Agile and powerful player who can play either end. Strong overhead and aggressive in the contest. At TAC Cup level this year averaged 19 possessions and nine marks in his 13 matches, also kicking 16 goals. All-Australian at U18 level this year. AIS/AFL Academy Graduate. 20m Sprint (3.03sec), beep test (14.3) and 10.43sec three-km were highlights of testing undertaken at the NAB AFL Draft Camp. From Nar Nar Goon F.C.

Rank: 2
Profile: The Bombers have the tough task of choosing between an elite ruckman (Leuenberger), a superb CHF (Gumbleton) or the best CHB prospect we’ve seen in a few years. Hansen is the lowest risk and most ready to play quickly. Struggled at CHF and his best junior football has been rucking – which he won’t do in the AFL. With their lack of key defensive options and an ageing Fletcher, they could play safe. Gumbleton has more raw talent and Leuenberger is the other contender. Hansen is a good reader of the play and has genuine football nous.

“Macca69”

Rank: 2
Profile: Very versatile tall, who can play forward or back or even have stints in the middle as he is pretty quick and mobile for his size and is one of the best marks to come through the draft in recent years. Also has courage in spades and though able to play the role of a rebounding defender can play a tight negating role also. Could go anywhere between 2-5, but Dodoro is real keen on him apparently and is exactly what Essendon are looking for. Selwood, Gumbleton and Leuenberger all a genuine chance to go at #4.

Rank: 2
Profile: Hansen is a courageous tall who is suited to CHB where he can zone off his opponent and read the play to perfection. Very strong in the air. Has very good endurance especially for his size. His kicking is one area that might need minor work, can be prone to banging the ball on the boot too often. There have been reports that Dodoro rates him at #1 in this years group and there is little doubt the bombers are desperate for a key defender for the future. Others that might come into Essendon’s calculations are Gumbleton, Selwood to sure up their midfield and Leuenberger after Sheedy said that tall athletic rucks are very important in the modern game. Dodoro recently stated on radio that these were the 4 players he was considering at 2. Hansen is a good chance to go to the Roos at the next pick if he gets past the Bombers.

Rank: 2
Profile: Very mobile KPP with a big motor. Possesses tremendous speed and acceleration for someone of his size. Is a natural CHB who reads the play well and will zone off his direct opponent to be the third man up. Has immaculate timing on when to leave his opponents, when to punch or take a mark. He has a penetrating kick which is accurate as well as long. Decision making with the ball seems to be the area he needs to work on the most, tends to just blast away a bit too much.

Bottom line: Has all the tools to become a dominant AFL KPP.

Summary
Lachlan is easily the best mark in the draft and most probably the best since riewoldt. He reads the play better than any player he has played against and when many players are standing waiting for the ball to land in the pack, Lachlan will be running off somewhere else and receiving an easy un-contested mark. As he is still skinny and hasn’t developed to his full capabilities there is a large scope for improvement. He has excellent endurance for a key position player and his current size would be the only concern. As at AFL level he may be out-bodied until he has spent a few pre-seasons in the gym.

Jay Rooney

Rank: 3
Profile: Courageous key position player with one of the best contested marks in this year’s draft pool. Played at all positions down the spine during the U18 national championships but looks more suited to a defensive role. Dominates his opponents and does not drop many marks. Showed his amazing courage and hunger for the ball when getting knocked out in a national championships game while running back into a pack. One of five Vic Country players selected in the U18 All-Australian side. Excellent endurance and is freakishly athletic for his size. Minor hip surgery won’t stop the Kangaroos selecting Hansen, who will provide assistance to a disappointing Roos defence.

Maybe you've got to go backwards before you can go forward but the Lachlan Hansen that I just watched playing for Tassie v Coburg is not a patch on the one that played for us earlier this year.

If you watched the game without knowing any of the U 18s form you'd pick Jack Riewoldt in a heartbeat. Hope we've picked the right player.

IT is becoming a familiar, disappointing pattern as the Devils yo-yoed between effort and pressure on their way to a seventh straight loss yesterday.

Against Port Melbourne at Bellerive, patches of brilliance were matched by periods of absence as the Devils repeatedly played catch-up footy only to again go missing after getting within striking distance.

Kangaroos No.3 draft pick Lachlan Hansen played his best game for the Devils in defence,

Ridiculous thing to say. How can you even be narrow minded enough to think of saying that. Hansen is and always will be a better player then jack riewolt. Riewolt is one dimensional and can only play at ff where hansen can play anywhere down the spine and with a few years pre season could move into the midfield in spells ala chad cornes.

dont know why these kinds of people call themselves supporters when all they do is be pessermistic about our future stars then do a 180 when they turn good

Apart from the game against Coburg when he was run on and off the bench all day his form has been pretty solid with Tasmania. Is the leading Kangaroos player in the Bartercard Tasmanian Player of the year award averaging 3 out of a possible 5 each game.

Creswell was playing him in a number of different positions during the early games and has only recently left him at CHB where he plays his best football. Played on long time VFL player David Pitt against Port Melbourne and shut him out of the game whilst taking about 10 marks and making a number of good spoils.

Was again solid on Sunday against Geelong. Excellent first quarter and when the rain and wind came he frustrated Playfair with his spoiling. Probably could have marked a few that he punched, however, given the wet conditions he made the right call. A couple of excellent smothers as well. Looks like he has filled out a bit and if his form continues he may get a few more games with the Roos before the end of the year.

Heading down to Preston on Sunday to see the Roos boys in action against the Bullants.

Had a close look at Hansen at training and he is impressive, but until his upper body develops we will have to put up with him playing in the 2's, he consistently put the ball through the goals from 50 mtrs out at training, I can't be sure of accuracy but the distance wasn't a problem, definitely a keeper and has future star all over him.

Late withdraw was Hansen but why he is an AFL player who the Kangaroos picked up at pick 3 so why should a old jerk like Brown take his place in the side he is there to play AFL has an injury come over him if not he should be playing why Brown, Hansen would probably had been a better option looking at the game

Whoever thought as him as a late withdraw if he had no injury why take him out we were playing Richmond for all that we still would have won with him when he is taken at pick 3 you would expect he would get a game.

Have a look at the reviews on his game last Sunday for Werribee against Bendigo Bombers on another thread. Ben didn't give him a great wrap but admitted he relied on someone else to help him write the summary. All the signs were good. Played in defence for entire game and ran forward when he could and kicked 1 goal and missed another. The most pleasing aspect was his contested marking which was a real feature of his game at Under 18 level. With Gibbo injured he may be given a chance but knowing Laidley he'll go with experience v youth.

Has put in two very solid games in defence against Bendigo and North Ballarat. Given that NB are one of the form teams I thought his performance yesterday was more than credible given he is obviously playing under duress with his left foot. I hope it's not broken as it will set him back for 6-8 weeks.

I'm sure Laidley would like to have him in the side ahead of Brown and to a lesser extent Watt, but he needs to earn the spot. If he was at a struggling club like Melbourne he'd be playing seniors. Laidley doesn't generally play kids just for the experience. If Lachie continues to do what is asked of him by the Roos and Werribee coaching staff his turn will come. He doesn't have to be BOG but it wouldn't hurt.

His efficency was better today. Played a pretty negative role down back and did it well. Picked up Johnson and Jamar when they went forward who are monsters. His closing speed and spoiling yesterday was good and his marking will only get better.

I liked the way he endeavoured to stop either Jamar or Johnson at the throw-ins and ball ups around the ground. They were trying to come over the top and he either went with them or tried to keep them from the contest. Was caught out early in the last qtr when Johnson charged into the middle from the ball-up as part of a set play. They tried it again later in the qtr but Lachy was on to it and got to the ball first.

Would have liked to see him match-up on Cale Morton which he did for a few minutes in the 2nd qtr. Laidley is confident enough with his ability to have him playing on the bigger bodies and this will stand him in good stead for next year. Has only had a couple of goals kicked on him in his 5 games this year.

His contested pack mark in the last qtr was fantastic.

Still not sure where Lachlan is finally going to best serve the Roos in the future but more than happy with the way he is progressing.

Was set up a few times yesterday with "hospital style" handballs and on every occassion he was able to get away a handball or kick to advantage. Earlier this season he wasn't quick or strong enough to do that.

Used his body cleverly yesterday to stop his opponent allowing a third player to come across and mark. Always played in front which was a positive sign.

Liked his comeback after Mitch Hahn eased him under the ball in the last qtr and scored a goal. A minute later Lachlan ran off Hahn and accepted a great pass on the wing, handballed to the running Sinclair and Grant finished off with a goal. I looked back to the Doggies forward line and there was Hahn standing all by himself looking like a goose.

Lachie ran hard all day to present an option and as usual most were not honoured but he didn't stop. Also helped out in some of the ruck contests.
