Shannon Grant - The confident midfielder was averaging 20 disposals per game last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury in round 18. Another ageing Roo whose experience should be invaluable to the club's young and inexperienced list.

Round 1 vs Collingwood MCG Conditions: Dry / Perfect.

Gameday statistics:
Kicks: 15 (1,6,4,4) Handballs: 4 (2,1,1,0) Tackles: 1 Frees 0-0 Scoring: 2.2

My Rating out of 10. 5

Comment: Aside from the embarrassing miss & crumble in swooping the ball in the dying stages, I thought Shagga was servicable in a game that lacked much inspiration, skill and intensity. Was polished & yet rusty in much of his efforts.

Highlight of his game was snaring that goal from 35m out early in the last quarter that really was one of very few Livewires North could rely on in the forward line. ( :o Pie fans let me have it **how?** after boasting about slamming that gem early in the last.... I was so humiliated.... CRUSHED... more than words can say )

Comment: Wasn't able to break into open field play often enough. Constantly under pressure to dispose of ball. Provided a few 1% to benefit teammates play. Servicable player.

Comment: Much improved and hard committed effort. Stuff that has been rarely seen from Shagga in recent times. :thumbsu: even 2001 perhaps? ;)
Bluecollar type game from the Birthday boy. The BIG THREE- O

Round 5 vs Geelong Skilled Stadium Conditions: Dry / Sunny

Gameday statistics:
Kicks: 9 (2/2/3/2) Handballs: 3 (0,1,1,1) Tackles: 8 Frees 1-3 Scoring: 2.0
Marks: 4

My Rating out of 10. 6
Season Average : 4.60 (23 from 5 games)

Comment: Last season in the corresponding game, Shagga ammassed 36 possessions amongst a poor team performance, this game was more about a great team performance and a poorly umpired game that crucified Shagga from having a better impact. Sevicable game regardless as Shagga applied defensive pressure as well as kicking 2 long range goals on the run.

Season Average : 5.3 (32 from 6 games)

Comment: Outstanding performance, nominated by many media as B.O.G.
Very influential in getting North's 6 vital goal headstart and continually presented to give his former team plenty of heartache. Kicked the sealer to drive the stake deep into the bloods.

My Rating out of 10. 7.5
Season Average : 5.7 (45.5 from 8 games)

Comment: Continued to haunt the Blues with his damaging touches, played more as a permanent forward this week, missed a set shot from 35m in the 3rd Q, didn't apply enough defensive pressure but found space to punish the Blues by sticking the dagger in thier throats with 5 emphatic goals.

Gameday statistics:

My Rating out of 10. 8
Season Average: 5.94 (53.5 from 9 games)
Comment: What could of easily been Shagga's biggest career goal haul, could of easily been a gutwrenching loss in a bizzare game. Shagga was a continual game winning threat to the Dees, finding the space, outclassing his opponent and inflicting hurt on the scoreboard but still wasted ample opportunities to suffocate the Dees.

Wasted opportunities nearly killed us and we cant afford to do that against the weagles. But in all seriousness Shannon Grant just keeps getting better with age

My Rating out of 10. 3
Season Average: 5.68 (62.5 from 11 games)

Comment: This game qualified Shagga for AFL membership. (300 overall games incl Int series, pre-season). A relatively quiet game on the stats sheet although Shagga butchered a unforgivable point blank miss from 20m out after recieving a clever pass from Aaron Edwards who marked tight in the pocket. Dissappointing game by Shagga. Still leads club goalkicking with 24 majors.

Season Average : 5.5 (66 from 12 games)

Comment: Nothing different from last week. Missed two absolute MONTY's in front of goal. :o. Such a massive dissappointing output. Third quarter of 8 touches may look good on paper but the reality is North only conjured ONE solitary goal for that quarter = minimal effectiveness from Shagga's numbers. :thumbsd: Only a clever snapshot from 15m out being a rare highlight.

Season Average : 5.33 (69 from 13 games)

Comment: Losing lots of touch over the past month. :( Started game from the interchange this week. Despite being carried by his teammates as a passenger this week, Shagga still earns his pay by carrying Archer off the field after 300 club games... No milestone excuses next week pal. Wonder if JYD is losing patience ???

Put it this way, Shagga is always going to be of more value than Campbell, Thomas etc. at this stage.

Gameday statistics:
Kicks: 21 (10/3/2/6) Handballs: 7 (0,2,4,1) Tackles: 1 Frees 1-2 Scoring: 0.1
Marks: 16!

My Rating out of 10. 7
Season Average : 5.42 (76 from 14 games)

Comment: Played the upfield linkman role, plenty of uncontested possessions allowed Shagga to regain some much needed touch. Dissappointing as his attempts at goal were well below par but definately instrumental in bringing more teammates into the action. Good move by Dean Laidley. Shagga used much of back half disposal effectively.

I have to say, I was wrong about his game against Richmond. I suggested he was crap, but I've watched it again, and, although his kicking overall was poor, he was in our best 5-10. Another solid performance against Freo as well.:thumbsu:

Comment: Very similiar game role to previous week. First quarter very prominent with 13 touches as a loose sweeping link man. Still no sign of hurting the opposition on the scoreboard. Missed a easy set shot AGAIN!!
Still a solid game.

Season Average : 5.57 (89.5 from 16 games)

Comment: Continuing to contribute in a team orientated way getting more midfield uncontested touches and moving ball quickly to forward targets.
Solid effort by Shagga. Snapped an absolute gem from a crowded situation, deep in the forward zone in the third quarter. :)

My Rating out of 10. 6
Season Average : 5.61 (95.5 from 17 games)

Comment: Servicable game. Plenty of loose uncontested possessions that linked together for team-mates to break up the Hawthorn structure. Went forward on rare occassions including a rushed attempt snap shot that went out on the full. :o Still anticipate a Shagga revival in coming weeks.

My Rating out of 10. 2.5
Season Average : 5.44 (98 from 18 games)

Comment: Looked promising in a handful of plays including kicking a rare GOAL after reaping a contested mark at the top of the goalsquare. Basically a spectator game by Shagga. Didn't get much involved, teammates continually butchering forward thrust opportunities leaving Shagga angry and fustrated.

Season Average : 5.26 (100 from 19 games)

Comment: Is there a distinct possibility that Shagga is hampered by a niggling injury? Isn't playing with much confidence in recent weeks. Poor & minimum output for much of the game with embarrassing shots for goal underlining his bitterly dissappointing afternoon.

Bewildered by his form. :( Hoping he can overcome his slump.

Archer Grant...a unique blend of skill and ferocity...bring on season 2025 :D

I'm starting to get a little worried about Shags. Blokes like him win you finals (just take a look at the 1999 GF) and this form slump looks like a bit more than a drop in confidence. His goal kicking and general field kicking has been well down along with his running capacity. Has to be carrying an injury.

Agree 100%. Players rarely make excuses when niggles are having a impact, look at Judd, it's just a matter of overcoming the bumps and not letting the team down by showing acts of 'weakness' is what I think it's more about.
Resilency is a quality that comes with dedication & sacrificing oneself. With Azza missing, Shags seems to have played a completely different role and it's worked on occassions. So much little things that is prohibited for discussion.

Thanx Hurricane.
When you consider the score of '6' is servicable, Shagga has played his fair share of ABSOLUTE SHOCKERS!! If he wasn't the guy he is, (runs on the board) he'd be playing in the magoos. That's what has pulled his average down. I'm not like the media that tickles a good game as a near B.O.G. like some folk do... keep it real.

Most of the media have kept North's season in check. I've always known that the 'MEDIA OVERHYPE' players/ teams/performances so badly. Look at what happened on the weekend... Hawks smashed by 12 fricken goals. I was a sucker to think the Hawks are a contender. Buddy Franklin is no better/ lesser player than Scott McMahon IMHO. Scotty just doesn't have/ GEt the OVER INFLATED media 'Whoo-HA'. (relief for Scotty). Let's see how JW Smith shows up Selwood this week.

Comment: What can be said what we don't already know?
Shagga intercepted a Mackie handball and kicked truly.. the only real highlight for the TEAM. Tried hard to lift in the last quarter, gaining 10 possessions. That's better than resembling a cardboard cut-out.

Comment: Wasn't the outstanding player as he could be with 24 touches but still provided much of team co-hesion with invaluable input and really JYD has re-invented Shagga, the player with another dimension for much of the year that most ppl didn't think was possible. Among the better players that made things tough for Hawthorn which in a way, was vital in breaking down the Hawks gameplan. JYD outcoached Clarkson when it counted unlike Round 3.

Comment: Got off to a flyer with two exciting passages of play resulting in two first quarter goals in the opening 10 minutes...then wasn't as influencial as we anticipated as Port took control and our boys were never likely to recover.

His season average describes the season he had, if 6 represents servicable IMHO, Shagga was below the mark. Has slowed down in the pace dept. May have 2, if not 1, real quality season/s of footy in him but I think he'll feel abit dissappointed in his overall output.

After finishing a lucky 10th (IMHO) in the 2007 B&F, Shagga is still in the posse to contribute toward North's 'ONE FOR the THUMB'... fifth flag in 2008.

I'm hopeful Shannon can continue to BITE the opposition on the scoreboard with his purple patch performances that are becoming his match winning trademark in recent seasons. Goal assists will be just as crucial as Shannon's slick disposal can have devastating consequences for opposition teams that ease up.

GO SHAGGA!!

first 3 possessions were turnovers that resulted in essendon scoring.
match efficiency of 67%. not good enough by his own standards. should not be positioned in the midfield. barely serviceable.

2 out of every 3 hitting the target is ok? 3 years ago this bloke had sublime skills, now he kicks the ball like a right footer. i am happy for him to miss targets if the ball still goes to our advantage, but this did not happen enough. he still has football smarts and should always get a few possessions, but he has to be better when he uses it.

Much much better today. Had a strong game with a purple patch in the second quarter. Was still running hard at the end of the game - 60 - 70m gut running into space to be an option, very pleasing to see. Spent some time in the midfield, but was a very dangerous forward.

Comment: Smart game with 76% efficiency. Quite effective with inflicting hurt on the scoreboard which is Shagga's trademark. Won 57% of his disposals from contested situations. Polished effort even though I couldn't fit him in the best 3.

Comment: A pleasant 31st Birthday performance without being overly damaging. Showed the way in the third term with a critical mark & goal and again in the last quarter by demonstrating a focal point up forward. Capitalized on the opportunity missed last time which put North in front in time-on. One of the better players on the field with a 92% rate of efficiency from 24 disposals.

Comment: Limited opportunities restricted Shagga's input as the opposition continually gelled well to clear the ball without much pressure. Shagga had 4 tackles but the dysfunctional forward line refused to work hard when North didn't have the ball. Even though the rare direct delivery to Shagga resulted in couple of goals, the supply and execution to the fwd line hampered Shagga's game considerably.

Comment: Worked hard for much of the game that was filled with fumbling & general disposal errors due to a game of attrition on a wet surface. Shagga continued to force the ball forward with 5 Inside50 entries resulting in 2 vital assists and also kicking 2 goals himself. Missed a 35m set shot which should of given him 3 goals. Applied pressure, chased and reaped 4 tackles. Missed a couple half chances to make good on scoring opportunities
which may have resulted in a more convincing output. Quite Serviceable.

Comment: Relatively quiet in the first 3 quarters as Shagga mostly out of the play on most occassions until the last quarter when he helped give North the impetus to run all over the undefeated Bulldogs. Amassed 9 4th qtr disposals. Missed two gettable goals, one after swooping on a loose ball get from a brilliant Drew Petrie smother only to hit the post from point blank range  that really should of put the hurt on the scoreboard. Played too cute on another occassion by going unnecessarily short instead of driving HOME a RUN on goal from 30m out. :thumbsd: Can't afford to SPRAY gimme's when the game is still on the line. Credible arse busting final quarter :thumbsu: lifts this game to a servicable rating of 6.

Comment: The intense pressure of the Lions mauled Shagga so much to remind everyone he hasn't got long to go. Found many of his few (most uncontested) possessions as a loose link man off the half back line but the reality is that unless Shagga has teammates around him to feed to, he'll look slow and unaccountable. Highlight of the night for Shagga was giving off a quick handball in the second qtr to a teammate to get a much needed goal.
Can do better and still an important member of our team.

Comment: Two prominent passages of play that resulted in 2 goal assists from 2 forward entries were Shagga's moments last night. Failed to penetrate a 40m
set shot in the final quarter underlines his decliine. I hope I'm proven WRONG but his form is more about the amount of hard running the game requires now and his output isn't as clinical with limited opportunities.

Comment: Gathered many of his 20 possessions outside 30m, failed to convert any goals which means the opposition were not effected whatsoever by Shagga's input. Harmless possessions with 55% efficiency and NO goal assists.
Of his fwd50 entries including the towering mark by Thommo were encouraging but once again, crucial opportunities that went begging, severely hurt the team getting a winning score on the board. As much as rest of the year expectations are concerned, 40 goals for the season shouldn't be ruled out but continual wasted opportunities are making this an extreme long shot.

Shannon Grant suspended by Kangaroos
19:14 AEST Wed Jul 9 2008
Source: ninemsn news

North Melbourne premiership forward Shannon Grant has been suspended by the club from playing in Saturday night's AFL match against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

The Kangaroos said in a statement the ban was put in place because the 31-year-old breached the club's code of conduct. (tsk tsk tsk) :o

But the `Roos refused to give details of what Grant had done wrong (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showpost.php?p=11717436&postcount=28).

The suspension comes at a crucial time for North, who are just two points out of the top eight.

But Grant, a veteran of the club's 1999 premiership, has struggled for form for much of this season.

Summary: Was quiet early but worked himself into the game as we played a more attacking game in the second half. Hit the post with a quick snap from point blank range in the 3rd quarter and just missed to the left from a set shot in the first that could of been the first of 4 goals on the night but was serviceable nethertheless when it counted as Shagga planted a bomb in the corporate boxes after Matt Campbell blitzed around the boundary to set up Shagger in the goalsquare to hammer the nail in the Pies coffin. Contributed with 2 assists and proved to be very dangerous when teammates are running wild.

Summary: Two highlight pieces stood head & shoulders from Shagga today, kicked an absolute gem from the boundary, out 40m, in the 2nd quarter that bent around the post with such class and applied a furious tackle on the wing late in the 3rd quarter that rekindled moments of his stellar B&F 2001 season. Kicked 3 straight which effectively put enough hurt on the scoreboard towards the end of the game. Had one major clanger that should of been his 3rd goal at the time, in which Shannon marked 40m from goal then kicked
straight down the oppositions throat 15m out which led to a string of Bulldog possessions that resulted in a 12 point play..

Overall had a 81% efficiency from just 16 touches. Last week, I've given him a 6 rating to the insistence of the coach saying it was a TEAM effort for the team's best players. Serviceable output nethertheless.

Was a real tight, contested night but still Shagga managed to grind out some good goals/score assists in his last game of footy. The third last premiership player of the 90's, it's sure going to take some time to get used to not seeing the number 6 patrolling the half-forward area dangerously.

Good work on keeping tabs on Shagga this season Woodson :thumbsu:
