David Hale - The Roos' No 1 ruckman played every game last year averaging 11 hitouts and 11 disposals per game. Hale also booted 11 goals last year, showing he has the ability to hurt the opposition in the ruck as well as on the scoreboard.

Well, looks like Hale's player revues are going about as well as his career at the moment.
For me, Round 3 was 3/10. Gave us nothing around the ground, his ruck-work was poor, continues to drop marks he should take. Sure, scored 2 goals in the last quarter, but anyone could've done that. They were Shane Clayton-like goals.
Season average - 3/10.
Career averagre - 3.5/10.

Another poor performance - 3/10. His early ruck work was OK & took a contested mark in the 1st Q. Otherwise, he was about as useful as a fishnet condom. And to think Crocker & co. think that Hale is the answer up forward. Baffling.
Season Average - 3/10
Career Average - 3.48/10 (& declining)

Make or break year for Hale, no doubt. Still hasn't found a permanent position and could easily be found on the outer if Goldstein improves.

Definately has the talent, hence why he was taken at pick 7 and is a strong mark but needs get a lot more involved.

Anyway, will be interesting having Hale as my 'player watch' because if he becomes a more 'rounded' player, it will do wonders for the team.

Has so far played in all pre-season matches as well as the intra-club.

Only saw the intra-club match and he was solid without being spectacular.

By all reports, he teamed up very well with McIntosh vs Fremantle last night, which is encouraging. Hopefully he can do that more often throughout the season and form one of the most dangerous ruck duos in the AFL.

Time will tell...... time will tell.

Round 1 v Essendon

Hale started off well with some marks and shots at goal in the forward fifty. He should have kicked about three goals, but instead, ended up with three behinds. Laidley didn't give him much time in the ruck, for which I believe that if we are to be successful this season, Hale has to be played in the ruck more. He also needs to kick straight, which has been a problem of his since last year. In 2006, his accuracy was very good, which shows that it is a confidence factor.

Overall, Hale was good early, but like the majority of the team, was nowhere to be seen when Essendon made their onslaught. If he kicked straight, he would have been one of our better players, but bad kicking is bad football, so his game was well below par.

Statistics:
9 kicks
5 handballs
14 possessions
7 marks
0 goals
3 behinds

Not sure on the hitouts, but he had less than Petrie and McIntosh which is not his fault as he was played mainly up forward.

Efficiency was a poor 64%, especially under the roof at Telstra Dome.

Thanks for the summary. Do you think he will ever develop the hardness/ruthlessness that many big men have?

Yes, I think it's possible. Going by his pre season and Round 1, he seems to have developed some hardness. Yesterday, it wasn't so much the hardness that he lacked, it was more his efficiency. He did look like he gave a damn out there, which was lacking last year.

I wouldn't say he has completely turned the corner in the hardness department, but from what I saw yesterday, he looks like he could be ready to kick a bag sooner rather than later. Either that, or dominate a game in the ruck, either way is good.

I've missed the last two games, so there will be no description of these matches, only ratings based on what I've read and heard. May be dropped this week by the sounds of things as well.

Missed out on seeing the game v Collingwood, so no rating for that.

Round 6 v Sydney

Easily his best game of the season, was a little quiet in the first half but his second half was great. Kicked two goals when the team needed it, especially in a low scoring snore-fest thanks to the Floods. Was very good in the ruck as well, and a continuation of this for the rest of the season will see Hale take more of the ruck load with McIntosh. His tackling was also a feature, one in the dying minutes which would have resulted in a Sydney attack, was very pleasing.

Didn't see the match, had it on the radio and based on what I heard, Hale didn't have a great match. I think he had about 17 hitouts, which is good, but didn't do much around the ground.

Rating: 3
Season Average: 3.6I would have given him 1. As useless as the snag on Devil Fish's Body.

Anyways for Hale to have a Season Average of 3.6 just shows how ordinary Hale has been thus far this season.

Dead Set Goldstien could have got 4 touches and 17 hitouts on the weekend. Why not play him?

The conditions weren't ideal for a big man, though, ZondorFish.

He really does need to find consistency soon, perhaps you can hook him up with some Baked Potatoes?

Round 8 v West Coast

Easily Hale's best match of the season. Was strong around the ground, taking vital marks and chipping in with three goals. Was in the top three players on the ground. If this is maintained throughout the season, and McIntosh picks up his form from last year, North's ruck combination looks deadly.

Statistics:
12 Kicks

Round 9 v Western Bulldogs

Largely unsighted for most of the match, unfortunately a shadow of last week's performance. Had a couple of shots at goal, but failed to convert. Played mostly as a forward with the occasional stint in the ruck.

I look forward to the day Hale AND McIntosh play a blinder in the SAME match. Hopefully it won't be too far away, where Hale plays like he did v West Coast and McIntosh plays like did v Footscray.

One thing I can add is that I saw big Dave Hale on the corner of Collins St and William St, in the legal/finance hub of Melbourne this arvo. He was dressed semi formally with pants, shirt and tie. I hope he wasn't in Court!

Round 11 v Geelong

Was fantastic, definitely his best match of the season, perhaps his career. Worked beautifully with Petrie up forward, and out muscled Scarlett for a mark and goal not once, but twice. Hopefully he will be played deeper to goal again versus Fremantle as his contested marking is becoming a feature. Also, his goal kicking is much like it was 2-3 years ago.

He did extremely well in the ruck as well, many of his taps resulting in clearances and was showing hardness and desperation for the ball that is required consistently from him.

More of this from Hale, and we will cause sides a lot of trouble.

If he was consistent in his performances, that wouldn't be out of the question.

He's starting to become a bit more consistent, and if he gets even better in the second half of the season, then who knows where that may lead him?

Hale took 6 contested marks on the weekend, absolutely awesome. I feel that it was his best four quarter performance of the season, he was grabbing everything. At this rate, he may be one of our most important players, but let's not look that far ahead.

I'll be away to Europe for the next three weeks, so I won't be able to report on the next couple of matches.

Zondor, or anyone for that matter, can fill in if they want.
