Been listening to some old tapes today whilst working about the house - found some DEVO from years and years ago.
What a cool band! And I don't just mean the "Whip It stuff' either.
Their covers of 'Mexican Radio' (Wall Of Voodoo?), and 'Head Like A Whole' (NIN) are cool too.
My kingdom for a world fiull of spudboys and mongoloids!
:D
A great band. My guess is that while they did not have a huge mainstream following they a large influence on many bands. Freedom of Choice always seems to be being played on RAGE by various guest programmers. It is a geat clip too.
One of my all-time favourite bands. DEVO has been my nickname since thrid grade, when I used to get beaten up a school for listening to them instead of KISS.
Should check out some of their earlier stuff like Jocko Homo, Mongoloid, Secret Agent Man and Satisfaction (a remake of the Rolling Stones song that may never have happened if Mick jagger wasn't drunk), especially the Boogie Boy mixes which are some of the weirdest sounds I ever heard.

Yep - been listening to all that really old stuff too. Mongoloid is wicked
Secret Agent Man - "You know I live a life of danger for the FBI!"

My daughter thinks they were on drugs when they wrote some of their songs, and she thinks I am because I like them. Some of their lyrics are just plain weird:

HE'S BEEN WITH THE WORLD
I WANNA END THIS PROPHYLACTIC TOUR

I really liked Devo when they arrived on the scene. However, a friend of mine went to see them in concert and was shattered to watch them do two hours of miming to backing tapes !!

I grew up with Devo, my Dad loves 'em.
Their cover of "Satisfaction" is a laugh, "Freedom of Choice" and "Beautiful World" are great. There's another one I really like, can't remember it though . . .

I used to cop a lot of grief when I wore my Devo shirt. Heathens.

Girl U Want . . . that's it!!
I went to see Devo at Festival Hall on Feb 9, 1982 and it was the best concert I've been too. The Beautiful World album was just released and they opened up with Going Under. It went for about 15 minutes I reckon. Just when we thought it couldn't get better, they did a power-packed version of Mogoloid that made your ears bleed.
Certainly no backing tapes or mimimg on that night.
