ProvidenceStadium, Guyana
11:30pm AEST Sunday April 1

Just about the last chance for the locals as they head to Guyana, home of Chanderpaul and Sarwan, for their third match in a week. Lara and the selectors are blaming each other for the loss to the Kiwis – the selectors say it was stupid for Lara to leave out strike bowler Taylor for reserve keeper Simmons, Lara says he would’ve loved to play an all rounder to strengthen the batting without hurting the bowling but they didn’t give him one (although I’m not exactly sure who he could want – possibly Darren Sammy). I’m sure the selectors could answer with uncapped Kieron Pollard’s bowling figures of 8/126 in his 27 overs across 7 matches, although he’s just another medium pacer to join the four they’ve already got and the two struggling offies. Simmons came in at 6/150 and ran out of partners having compiled 14 runs from 26 deliveries, while Dwayne Smith did ok with the new ball. Collymore has one wicket in four matches and should be making way for either Bradshaw or Taylor, and this time don’t bring him back.

For Sri Lanka, Dilshan and Arnold ended any talk of their time in the side ending with a 97 run partnership where both made 50s, although they didn’t quite get enough runs to defend, with strike rate perhaps being an issue but reserve batsman Atapattu not going to have any impact in that department. The top seven now all have fifties in the tournament, with Tharanga’s batting average of 33 and strike rate of 70 the worst, while with the ball the four main bowlers have averages under 20s, while Jayasuriya and Dilshan are tidy and this side looks pretty settled to put a lot of pressure on their semi final opponent, although a place in that stage is not so safe after losing to the Proteas.

Sri Lanka should romp this home but you never know with the Windies as it is their home country and if they got a Full crowd that just might get them home. Would be sad to see the Windies go in this stage but it is highly probable. I think a big score for Sanath is coming.

Lankans should smash the Windies here but the damn Windies are so inconsistent you can't tell. I can at least hope that Chanders will get a big score to help my desperately ailing dream team.

I think $2.55 is worth getting on for the windies, pretty much playing for a semi final spot here.
Chuck a bit on for Chanderpaul to top score as well.

Remind us why they schedule a world cup in one of the crappiest places with the worst weather conditions! You get more play in ****ing england than in the windies!

It's not meant to be their rainy season either. Part of the problem though is the lack of technical expertise in drying the ground though the Guyana one has very good drainage. In contrast with England though, when it stops raining the sun beats down quite hard.

I love the fact you refer to Guyana as having good drainage! You watching the same match? They have terrible groundstaff, no clue whatsoever!

What I meant was that when it was built it was constructed to have good drainage al la for eg. the MCG. In Antigua the drainage and the groundstaff were poor. Groundstaff in the Windies have always been dodgy and quite often pitch preparation is left until the last minute.

Windies have sent Lankans in.

I hope the ICC learns from this! Never schedule a WC in the Windies EVER again!

Jayasuriya brings up his 100 from 88 balls and after a slow start SL are really starting to steam along now and 300 looks likely.

I Lay $2.70 on Sri Lanka to NOT get 325 runs....thank god jayasuriya out , needed that badly

Game over.

West Indies 3/44 after 12. Lara, Gayle, and Bravo all gone.

Lara desperately desperately unlucky. The replay they showed was for a widescreen (and my telly ain't) so I assume his toe was slightly raised. But anyone who's ever played the game would instantly concede that that form of dismissal is akin to being run out backing up from a deflection from the bowler's finger. Personally, I've never been more infuriated at getting out than when I was once dismissed like that.

It's a damn shame too, Lara's been on the verge of a real biggie. Would've loved to watch his battle with Murali.

With the Bangers and Ireland not really in the hunt, I think it's now down to five. Well, five for the semi's, that is - nobody's going to beat Australia this month.

Ron
2 Apr 2007, 06:40
Well they need 10 an hour from now to win the game.
They still have wickets in hand, but Chanderpaul is going very slowly.

Hopefully they start to fire soon and at least look like they want to win.

I agree that Australia will finish 1st and South Africa 4th. Would be good to see NZ finally make the big one. Which would leave South Africa as the only major cricket nation yet to make a World Cup Final.

England is still some chance of making the semis.

Arthur agrees with those semi selections by the way but wants to avoid us. They're running scared as usual.
