Just about the last chance for the locals as they head to Guyana, home of Chanderpaul and Sarwan, for their third match in a week. Lara and the selectors are blaming each other for the loss to the Kiwis – the selectors say it was stupid for Lara to leave out strike bowler Taylor for reserve keeper Simmons, Lara says he would’ve loved to play an all rounder to strengthen the batting without hurting the bowling but they didn’t give him one (although I’m not exactly sure who he could want – possibly Darren Sammy). I’m sure the selectors could answer with uncapped Kieron Pollard’s bowling figures of 8/126 in his 27 overs across 7 matches, although he’s just another medium pacer to join the four they’ve already got and the two struggling offies. Simmons came in at 6/150 and ran out of partners having compiled 14 runs from 26 deliveries, while Dwayne Smith did ok with the new ball. Collymore has one wicket in four matches and should be making way for either Bradshaw or Taylor, and this time don’t bring him back.
For Sri Lanka, Dilshan and Arnold ended any talk of their time in the side ending with a 97 run partnership where both made 50s, although they didn’t quite get enough runs to defend, with strike rate perhaps being an issue but reserve batsman Atapattu not going to have any impact in that department. The top seven now all have fifties in the tournament, with Tharanga’s batting average of 33 and strike rate of 70 the worst, while with the ball the four main bowlers have averages under 20s, while Jayasuriya and Dilshan are tidy and this side looks pretty settled to put a lot of pressure on their semi final opponent, although a place in that stage is not so safe after losing to the Proteas.
