Hopes ready to replace Watson

The allrounder James Hopes has been placed on standby for his injured Queensland team-mate Shane Watson, who is battling a left calf strain. Watson was hurt bowling against Bangladesh on Saturday and is waiting for a review from the physiotherapist Alex Kountouris.

Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, confirmed Hopes as a shadow player, but he felt Watson would regain his fitness before the end of the tournament. "The intention and the expectation is that Shane will recover and play a vital part in the World Cup," Hilditch said.

The announcement is a blow for Cameron White, the Victoria allrounder who played during the CB Series, although Brad Hogg's strong form has negated the need for another slow bowler. Hopes, 28, is a similar player to Watson and has appeared in nine one-day internationals. He has scored 84 runs at an average of 28 and taken four wickets at 67.25.

Watson's aggressive middle-order batting - he has scored 77 runs at more than one-and-a-half runs a ball during the World Cup - and his containing bowling have made him a valued member of the side. Brad Hodge, who scored a century against The Netherlands in his last game, is likely to replace Watson for Sunday's match with England.

Doesn't really matter who they send though, they won't be getting a game.

It will simply be a 4 week holiday in the sun, do a bit of training and work on the tan.

Good luck to him.

If he ever plays for Australia again, that will be the day I give away cricket for good. The Australian selectors really do have rocks in there heads at times. This guy is an out and out dud. Simple as that. I'd rather play with 10 men than have him in the starting 11.

He's had a pretty good season though and would be more reliable than White TheBushie.

You idiot.

Check how many Qlders were named in the Australian team since 95. The most dominant domestic team on the planet, and they could barely get a look in.

You mention Maher, Love, and Bichel - maybe you should check their records. Look at Kasper and Joe Dawes while you are there.

Qld bias - that is hillarious.

Leading wicket-taker in the OD Domestic comp by 4 wickets.

But yeah, good one.

It doesn't matter who is on stand by, it could be White, McDonald, Cosgrove, Paine, hell even Gillespie, it makes no difference, even if the Hopes gets to go, he wont play. It looks as though Watson will stay though.

If Hopes does go Warwick, not having seen him play for a while, what speed does he regularly bowl?

Bloody Vics whinging about bias against their players yet again. How about us Redbacks eh? Or my other team Tasmania? No Adcock called up? Disgrace. No Butterworth? Disgrace.

If Hopes plays, Australia cannot win the World Cup. Simple as that. And they don't deserve to if they play him.

One Victorian (I'm not counting TheBushranger, he's a known troll) whinges and you drag the rest of us into it. Hopes won't get a game so I can assure you most of us couldn't care less who goes over.

Here we go, the unknowledgable whinging brigade is at it again.

"Oh woe is us, we can only win park cricket tournaments but we still expect a heavy representation in our national side"

How long until holidays finish?

hopes will probably be a good replacement... but this is the 2nd instance where a victorian has been dudded simply by time... the press release when the squad was released spoke of how unlucky cameron white was to miss out on being in the squad, after playing all summer... now when there is a potential spot which white would be suited to fill, he misses out...

same happened to brad hodge... he was unlucky to be dropped for the recalled Damien Martyn (great call that one) and then when another spot opens up, the unlucky hodge gets snubbed for Adam Voges...

this is why vic fans get frustrated... in the past there has always been a fairly predictable order of who is next in line... but of recent times, victorians just seem to be ignored when they reach the front of the line...

ABsolute hack at international level, tried and failed plenty of times, yet they want to give him another shot?
Where is the sense in that

It was either Hopes or White.

White's bowling's proved to be no better than Hodge at this level, while Hopes has been sharp for Qld and yeah, led the comp for wickets.

So makes sense to go Hopes as like-for-like cover for Watson.

Seriously there's no other genuine all-rounder we've got who has better claims. People are bagging him but they can't put up a better option cos there just isn't one. There was no way we'd punt on a kid to come in and debut in a WC semi.

Yep, has been given plenty of opportunities at that level. A whole 3 innings in fact.

After 3 ODI innings: Hopes average 28.00

After 3 ODI innings: Hodge average 24.00

Averages a fantastic 15 in the domestic comp with the bat, and 31 with the ball.

Hopes averages over 30 with the bat, scored over 300 runs last season, and was the leading wicket taker in the Ford Ranger Cup.

Since White and Hopes are about as good as each other as bowlers then White should have got the nod because he is 5 times the better batter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't we still winning even without Hodge?

I'm talking about if we play someone like Johnson ahead of Hodge. That wil jeopardise our chances as we are not picking the best team.

Unless we are chasing.

Or under pressure in general. White is a good player to come in with 240 on the board and 8 overs left to bash it around carefree but whenever he comes in with the side under the hammer he generally fails.
