View Full Version : Memorable sporting moments made more memorable by commentators

I often think random things when I'm at work and need a distraction.
This one came to me at about 3.30 yesterday afternoon.
We've all seen our fair share of fantastic sporting moments in our lives. But some moments, although great in their own right, can be enhanced, and stick far more vividly in the memory, when a commentator says something that burns the moment into our memory.
One example, and the one I immediately thought of, came during Keiren Perkins' Atlanta gold winning 1500m swim from lane 8. One of things that always makes me remember that swim was the great Dennis Cometti exclaiming "This is rare gold. This is the best kind of gold!".
Does anyone have any other such nominations?

Bill Collins call of the 1986 Cox Plate between Bonecrusher & Our Waverley Star. I am not a big horse racing fan, but when you listen to that call it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand on end!
Loved Bruce calling our game v Collingwood in 1990 when Kolyniuk marks & Bruce says, 'Will he take Wright on, I thought he would, one bounce......'
Also watch a Friday night game many years ago between Ess & Rich. It was a tight game with Ess holding a 6 point lead late in the game & Stuart Maxfield runs into a goal from about 45 out & Bruce says, 'kick the goal Stuey."

Well I'm glad to see this thread had plenty of legs.
Thanks for trying TCD.
Might be worth putting this one to sleep.

"And bonecrusher races in to equine immortality"

I can only think of a footy one...I thought Clinton Grybas' commentary of Boydy's goal against Richmond in Round 20 2005 was really good, that sticks in my mind anyway.

"Go Leisel, go the legend!" Ray 'Rabs' Warren
"I see it, but I don't believe it!" Quarters after Nick Davis' semi final heroics.
"They've won it!!" Jason Dunstall proclaims the fall of Essendon's 21 game winning streak.

They are the words of one very shattered Cats supporters in Anthony Hudson, not Stephen Quartemain.

Could've sworn it was Quarters. Oh well, great line nonetheless.

"It's gold, gold, gold to Australia" - Norman May
The thing that sticks in my mind mostly about this one is the mental picture of yours truely wearing googles and cap doing the butterfly across the loungeroom floor of a party before losing conciousness while (allegedly) letting rip with the loadest fart in history.
Craig Foster's scream of "YEEEEEESSSS!!" when John Aloisi scored the winning penalty against Uruguay was truly something special.
Bruce's call when Chris put through the winning goal against Essendon I loved too, "He's done it! He's kicked it! A magnificent effort!"
Not to go against the theme of the thread, but if I could mention a commentary passage I didnt like, Anthony Hudson's "Who would've thought the sequel would be just as good as the original?!" after last year's Grand Final I definitely didn't like. Just sounded rather corny.
Bruce McAvaney's commentary when Gary Moorcroft took that mark against us in 2001.
"lucas read it best, wrong side for him, hooks it back...oooohhhhh what a mark. Sensational"
brilliant mark, sadly it was against us.
Anthony Hudson in 2001 again, us against the Hawks
"Eagleton, terrifiic kick to Giansiracusa, he is a great kid, a great kick, and a great goal"
Non-Football commentary:
Andrew Baildon with Dennis Cometti in the 4x100m Freestyle Relay for men in Sydney
Andrew Baildon screams "YEEEESSS, NEW WORLD RECORD: The Australians have just broken the American stranglehold on this race, the roof is lifting off this stadium right now"

Fair call.
I didn't mind the previous year's one from Quartermain though: "The longest premiership drought in football history is over!"

Let's hope he says it again this year.
