What England would give for an opening batsman who could dominate the opposition. Well, there is one, but sadly he has spent the winter back home due to illness. Marcus Trescothick flew home two weeks into the Ashes tour, but has been involved in Somerset's pre-season. During a friendly against Devon today he has smashed 256 in a 30-over game, including 25 fours and 18 sixes.

Wow..... That's Cameron White-esque there, Devon are probably a minor side, but wow... hasn't lost his touch it seems.

EDIT: Cheers Pah, still a great effort

Devon are the Minor Counties champions but Taunton is small and flat, great to see him back though.

pity he's such a mummies boy he can't leave home! And with cricket being a world game, that's a slight problem.

hahaha, what a joke stresscothic is

If you are going to make fun of clinical depression then you are a sick piece of ****...

how the hell would you know? You know nothing about me or what i do so you are in no position to make any assumptions. I know one thing, when i go to Europe in June for 3-4 months for a holiday/business trip i wont need to rush home to mummy.

ease up turbo....i never mentioned depression and that certainly isn't what stresscothic says.

Marcus Trescothick, who suddenly returned to England before the start of the first test at Nagpur, has now revealed to Sky News that he picked up a virus early on in the tour and that is what forced him to return.

Somehow that doesn't seem right. He was reported to have broken down during the course of the tour game against the Indian Board President's XI.
Shortly after he was out on the final morning of England’s last warm-up match, in which they crashed to an eight-wicket defeat at the hands of an Indian Board President’s XI, Trescothick was seen leaving the ground in Baroda in tears.
Why'd he break down if it was just a viral/bacterial flu? Perhaps Zainub, as a far better physiology expert among us cricket bloggers, should clarify if there is actually a variety of flu which forces those infected to break down in tears.

Marcus is reported as also saying
Unfortunately, the two tours, Pakistan and India, are tough tours to go on. It’s not easy to take your families to that part of the world and you spend a long time away from home. You need your comforts and your security to be able to perform at a good level.
This is plain ridiculous. I hope some player from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan or Sri Lanka mentions England's ridiculously cold/wet weather, bombs in London last year and the UK Government's policies on Iraq as reasons for feeling uncomfortable there ... and still goes on tour. The whole point of life is to excel in unfamiliar conditions. One man did it better than just about everyone else in the game for nearly two decades, and his autobiography title is a fairly good indicator of how important it was for him to get away from those comforts.

Well, that is ironic and hipocritical, you are saying that Browney knows nothing about you, but then why do you have any right to comment on Trescothick's private life? Do you know about depression? Do you know how debilatating it can be on a person and ones family? Yeah? We can't comment on what reason were behind Marcus' departure, but seeing he has been affected by depression, it's not really a joking matter mate...

Who cares? The "man" is mentally soft and fragile.

He left Australia due to 'mental related illness,' viruses affected him in India as well, if it's just homesickness, I would agree with you, but quite clearly, he has had some mental issues.

Hardly commented on his private life FFS! called him a mummies boy and said it was a problem when cricket is a world game when he clearly can't tour yet seems to be able to carve it up without any problems on home soil.

I think, like many people it is "just homesickness"...thats why i'm bagging him. If he comes out and declares he as some new form of clinical depression that only kicks in whilst off the islands that form Great Britain then i will apologise.

Fair enough :p

I might seem a tad sensitive when depression comes up as well, little too close to home. Good to see Marcus back, hope he is over his problems, whatever they may be.

hey im probably being a tad flipant too. I think a lot of aussie males have only recently just began to believe there is more to depression than "harden the **** up nancy boy". It's then another large leap to believe you could have something genuine (that is an illness versus just being soft, fragile and in need of home comforts and your friends and family around) that seems to only effect you whilst overseas.

He was run out on 256 apparently, off 117 balls as Somerset scored 502/4 off 50 overs, it must have been a belter because Devon got a couple of hundred themselves.

its just my opinion but the english seem a fair bit 'soft' when it comes to injuries/family etc

look at KP, when that ball hit him in the ribs in the CB series, he immediately wanted to go home.

vaughan, cmon ive played with broken knees half my life.

steve harmison, should be one of the top bowlers in world cricket, but is too scared to get his name branded around getting smashed for 60+ runs in an ODI match

trescothick- he should be playing in the opening role for england but i dont believe some of the excuses he makes. i dont have anything against depression but when a guy comes out and plays for his county, it just shows that this guy is not a team player.

I think that the English selectors did declare that the had suffered depression. A bit like Jonathan Hay, these guys probably can't control how they're acting. Besides suffering depression is not akin to being a mummy's boy. A 'mummy's boy' is someone soft and mentally fragile who needs to stay close to home. Think of some of the footballers of sound mind who left their clubs to go back home That's more a definition of a mb. But they have every right to do that anyway.

I bet its because of what his mummy packed him for lunch.

He has also just had a double hernia operation so that put him out of the World Cup...
