View Full Version : Great win, felt so sorry for Bernie Vince but the youngsters fired!!

Got a terrible decision at the start of the game, Brogan looked like he played on, thought that was pretty rough. He did some terrific stuff under pressure though and took some very impressive marks. Only his fifth game and like Douglas, needs to find his comfort zone on the ground (it's tough on the kids when they're part of a rotation as opposed to holding a spot down). Overall very happy with how all the kids went, Knights was sensational again, only the one glaring turnover from what I saw (which, lets face it, is no different to any other player). The senior players all stood up again, very very happy. Felt like we should've won by more, but this was a near full-strength Port Adelaide up against a depleted Crows lineup. So happy.

I think the Knight Train has finally arrived. The young fellas were great as were our forwards. They knew Bodey wasnt going to play so they all upped their defnsive pressure, thats what impressed me most.

Really impressed with the young fellas today. I thought they had the better of the "Revolution" youngsters. VB was as brave as ever and Chris Knights had a heap of the ball and only a few errors. I love Douglas' second efforts.
VB's disposal is first rate. Pity he doesn't have the ball-finding ability of Knights (still can't quite crack the 20).
In all, very happy with the young players although Griffin was a little quiet.

He's still playing a bit as a tagger, I think he's shown he can find a heck of a lot of the ball very quickly when he's "released". I think we all forget how young he still is though. He's on the way. :thumbsu:

All of the youngsters impressed today, so stoked that our boys did so well [as in youngsters] against the much lauded power boys...Knights very good, Vince showed some great signs, Douglas very courageous and a good head, Griffin some aggro and some brains, Porps awesome in close...how was his attempted bump on one of the Burgers he missed but loved his sentiment!! I liked it...well done boys youv'e made my day, love your work!!Ps Macca is still the King.

The consistent theme I see with our kids is the eerie composure under pressure. Porplyzia, Vince, Douglas, the way they conduct themselves in tight is very promising. And how good is Vince's overhead marking!!

If that was directed at me I wasn't bagging him at all!! I'm saying that his tackle on Brogan wasn't a mistake at all, he played on and Bernie was correct in tackling him. The umpire should have just left it and allowed Brogan to take his kick, it was so harsh on poor Bernie.
Bernie Vince has one of the best overhead marks I've seen for a player of his size, he's so composed and skillful as you said, he's going to be something. I think he deserves to hold his spot. :)

Vince was good today, completely shut one of the Port "Gun Youngsters TM M Rucci" out of the game in Surjan. Port had to throw "The Surj" up forward to try and get into the game.

Seriously, I cannot believe how much his disposal has improved from when he first came to the club. During his first year I would worry when he got the ball, however now I feel so assured when it’s in his hands. He always makes the right decision as he seems to be able to sum up a situation so quickly. His kicks are pin-point and always find a target and he never panics. He had 18 disposals today and I would think most were high quality. He just doesn’t waste the ball. Another very solid game from VB. :thumbsu:
I was disappointed he spent so long on the bench though, and yes I know people will criticise me for this again. I do not doubt he needs a rest from time to time, and I saw how tired he was when he came off. However he doesn’t need 13 consecutive minutes on the bench which is what happened in the third quarter today. He spent the first 7 minutes on the ground, and then the next 13 off. :thumbsd: He only needs a few minutes to recuperate, not half the quarter.

I thought VB always had great foot skills. Early on in his AFL career what people thought were bad foot skills was really him panicking under pressure. He now has more experienced and as a consequence is more used to the speed of the game. He now knows how much time he has, sums up his options and kicks to the target where as previously he would panic and kick is as soon as he got it because of the perceived pressure.

Spot on ....he was getting use to the pace of the game ......he was also criticised for spear kicks becuase of the low margin of error but IMO it's a strength of his delivery to forwards .......gets to the forwrds quicker.
In terms of his rest time ....Drummond have to remember that he's not a huge lad, he's still U20 and playing the in and under game can really take it out of the body until his body has matured a bit more over a few seasons.
If Craig does not rest his body during the games properly he won't last the season

ADELAIDE’S young charges have come in for special mention in the team’s 24-point win over bitter rivals Port Adelaide, with coach Neil Craig and Showdown medallist Andrew McLeod both praising their contribution in the pressure-cooker game.
After crediting the team’s veterans in bulldozing the Bulldogs in Round 2, Craig said the Crows’ next generation of players were instrumental against Port Adelaide, particularly as the Power mounted a strong comeback in the third quarter.
“The thing I would like to say today is last week a lot of recognition should have gone to our senior players, whereas today I think it went the other way, with the way a lot of our younger players played,” Craig said.
“We had something like eight players with less than 50 games, so for them to perform in the Showdown and to win it is a great credit (to them).
“It’s a really great sort of experience for them to play in that game and to come out with a victory and for those guys to contribute really well. You can’t buy it.”
Martin Mattner, Nathan Bassett, Scott Thompson, Brent Reilly and Ben Hudson were among the Crows’ best in Showdown XXII, but it was emerging defender Richard Douglas who was highlighted by mercurial backman Andrew McLeod.
“I’m really happy, especially with the way some of our young blokes played,” McLeod said.
"I think they realise that they're a really important part of this football club, we need them to stand up week in and week out, and we know that's the best way for our footy club to operate.
“I said to (Douglas) after the game, you had better stop playing like that because you’ll get stuck there for the rest of your career.”
McLeod, who had more than 30 possessions and provided the Crows with drive from the backline all day, played down his scintillating early-season form, simply accepting he played a “a good game”.
“Oh nah, I don’t want to talk about that,” he said. “It was a good game. I just went out and did my job and that’s it.
Craig said the win was important “irrespective of the opposition”, but showed his side could match it with the quicker sides in the competition.
The Crows’ ability to rebound quickly off their defensive line was an important, if unheralded, trait, Craig said.
“Everyone talks about our defensive action, but our capacity to go forward quickly at the appropriate time I think is very important as well,” he said,
“We called on last week’s experience. The Western Bulldogs, maybe along with Port, are considered the quickest side in the competition. We were at least able to match it. I didn’t think the leg speed caused us any concerns.”
McLeod also said the Crows were learning to change the game’s tempo by playing patiently to suit their needs.
“I think that is something that we are just realising that we can do as a side,” he said.
“We did it last week and I think in the second quarter there, (Port) started to get a bit of a run, so we slowed it down.
“We are just getting a really good feel for the way the game is being played, the way that we should be playing it, whether that’s to slow it down or speed it up.
“The main thing you have to do is just play the game for what it is, otherwise you start worrying about other things and you stop doing what you’re supposed to.”

Don't forget that Craig David is a sports scientist. He'll know full well how to get the best longevity from his youngsters and ensure that they develop in as positive a fashion as possible. I have no doubts he's got a very strict program on the table for kids like VB and will continue to employ it so that we get the best from them.

Very poor desicion early for BV, lade definately looked to have played on, and it seemed to unsettle him, but to his credit he turned it around and played a Great game.
This lad can play good speed, good mark, good hands under pressure, well done!
Plus logically he has the V and the B in his name just like the great man himself!

Indeed he is a classy young player. He's deceptively quick, not the snail that some perceive him to be. Not explosive, but more or less a Porplyzia type of pace.
I was so agro after that 50 metre penalty, being Bernie's first game back, to have such a dodgy decision go against him was a nightmare. Can't get over his skills when surrounded by traffic and his overhead marking ability is just awesome.

That decision was an absolute stinker. Lade had moved sideways off the mark which is dead-set play on.
We also received 3 of the worst holding the balls against us that I've ever seen. One against Edwards and against Thommo.
I think it was the Edwards one where it was actually a Port player who scooped the ball in and not Edwards.
Overall the umpiring was deadset B grade and we were on the wrong end of the stick today.
21-11 was the final count.
I'd wager a fair portion of the 11 were in junk time.

That one against Thompson where Tredders dragged him down by the neck and then sat on his head was an absolute disgrace.
Whoever that ****er of an umpire was should be dropped back down to the Cs on that decision alone.
It'd have to be Ray '****ing' Chamberlain.

i've come up with my theory to it this year
I call it the Fox Footy Free and the Fox Footy Goal
over this three rounds (when fox has live coverage) everytime a game looks like breaking open or one team is getting on top there is a series of piss weak/poor umpiring decisions against the team on top
I figure that the fox managers call the ump managers and say that the ratings are dropping so get the game more competitive or else
either that or the umps are just getting worse
make them proffesional FFS - everything thing else is
evne AD is getting paid more than the PM:eek:

No question at all. Hell, Port only kicked a few goals in the third because of the avalanche of free kicks imo. Absolute joke and needs to be looked at.

Also look at the number of throws that have been called against us lately - watch the replays and they are handballs, just very quick ones.
Is it Bad or Good news that Goldspink passed his fitness test last week? So he could be back for the next round, but which umpire gets dropped as there have been some exceptionally poor games that I have seen.
McDermott, the only thing he could do was play the game, can't coach, can't umpire and no matter what the Sunday Mail think he is not the best opinion writer on football in this state, the number of times his opinion is wrong and he doesn't face up to it.....

Even the Port supporters sitting near me were embarassed about some of the free kicks they received. Some of the "holding the balls" were shockers. I'm going to watch the replay this morning and will pay close attention to see if we got paid any holding the balls because I can't remember a single one.

The noobs are getting better week by week.
Knights has strung a few good games together and looks like he's convinced himself he can play.
Douggie did some important things and maybe the bacline is his spot while he learns the game.
Vince will be ok - but at least only burned the ball due to confidence issues rather than skill problems......that can be fixed

Vince, Douglass, Knighta: All great games from the youngsters.
I think all three are still showing a bit of "deer in the headlights" panicked decision making - but that is improving, which is wonderful. All three found the ball quite a lot, which again, is 50% of the battle.
Knights in particular is looking good - lots of the pill today. Needs to dispose a LOT better of the ball though. Still, he did well with most possesions. I think that "not panicking" will come with time, and he will learn to execute. (Although Connell never did, did he?)
