For probably the best kick in our team, i'm constantly suprised that,
a) He doesn't kick more goals
b) He doesn't kick nearly enough from set shots
Is it more of a technique problem or what?

Finally! Someone who has noticed this as well. It's probably what stops him from being regarding as an elite player in the AFL - he doesn't kick enough goals. Yet when he does move forward, for someone with such good disposal he just can't find the sticks. It frustrates the crap out of me because the goals he misses are very kickable.

Yeh, the one he missed from pretty much straight in front annoyed me alot.
He's such a sublime kick of the ball yet he doesn't kick half as many goals as he should?
He should be aiming to kick around 15-20 goals a year at least. As you said, it's what is separating him from the absolute highest echelon of midfielders in the competition.

He needs to be kicking a goal a game to become a superstar like Judd. Kicks 6-10 a season, not enough.
Its a problem with our midfield...not enough goals from them. Mitchell rarely kicks goals, Bateman and Lewis rarely score goals either.
I was not confident when he had it 30 out directly in front, he didn't look confident and he sprayed it. Should be a certainty for a man of his class.

It was a bloody terrible kick. Needs to kick more goals.

Geez lay off all we need to do is let him handball to him self and do it on the run with some pressure I reckon he would have goaled it.
But in the early part of the game when Kanaga's were flooding we should have had Hodgey and Youngy bombing shots from 55.

Luke Hodge needs to start kicking those goals. If we were playing a decent side tonight those two 3rd quarter misses could have cost us the game.

I had some mad north supporters behind me trying to suggest he had some of the worst kicking skills in the competition. While they are so so wrong Hodge historically from set shots has been very very ordinary, he isnt that bad on the run or from the pockets(not great with snaps), but he/mitchell/lewis dont kick enough goals and hodge from setshots kicks it well off the boot it just doesnt go through the big sticks. Good topic philhawk I thought i was the only one noticing this.

Really ? I think he's your classic left-footer, beautiful kick when he's balanced. Haven't noticed if he struggles on his right foot (as many lefties do). I was surprised that he missed that set shot. But I think us North fans should be very quiet about anyone's kicking skills.

He turned a few over and missed a couple of gimmee's.
He didnt hurt the Kangas today.
Hodge is carrying an injury though. He has all last season too. Source: One of the hawthorn players

Love Luke, my favourite player. BUT, he has been terrible so far this season. I thought he looked lazy and disinterested last night. Just cruised between contests, only made late efforts to get to them when it looked like his opponent might get the ball and then usually only managed a half assed attempt at body contact when the ball had cleared. Then there's the shots on goal.
Come on Luke, I don't know if you're injured, but if you are not, then lift. You are our best player and we need you to take us to the next level.

Wonder whether he was looking lazy and disinterested because he just signed a new contract? It tends to happen a lot when players feel a little too comfortable.
His kicking was woeful last night. Aside from that he wasn't that bad, but heaps of room for improvement.
Nice to win like that and still have players missing and not have Hodge playing near his best! :D

You're right, he wasn't that bad. But, he wasn't too good either. My expectations of him are higher than most so I tend to rate his games harder.
I'm loving the work of Hogdey MK II though (Jordon Lewis). Aside from one or two poor disposals, his start to the season has been brilliant. As has Clinton Young's for that matter.

Judd is also a terrible set shot, kicks his 30 goals from crumbing F50 stoppages and running goals through the midfield.
I would be more confident with rowan jones from 30m out than Judd
You just knew with the day we were having he was going to miss it, winning 'ugly' was a good way to decribe the overall game...
But I agree with the sentiments in this thread, but with what's been said its difficult to kick goals off the HBF, which Clarko sees him first and foremost as...

I have always said that you would NEVER want Hodgey to be kicking the winning goal. He has always been an atrocious kick at goal, and it's time he practiced some goal kicking. He has missed some sitters the past few weeks. Not good enough..:thumbsd:
