View Full Version : Who in the history of the Hawks has been the best/most consistant ruckman?
Don scott will probably be the favorite here, but who has been our best people.
As a ruckman I modelled myself on salmon & spida(when he was still with the saints)
so for my money spida was the most creative ruckman to wear the brown & gold recently, with scotty the most consistant
why no replies?
Probably because the Ruck division has always been a weak point for the Hawks. We've had a few good ones over the years, like the ones you've mentioned, but compared to other sides like Essendon and Carlton, our Ruck division as a whole has been poor. We haven't been able to produce consistently good rucks from our own stocks, with many of the good ones recently being 're-cycled' (Fish and Spida). Even during the glory years, we didn't exactly have great Ruckmen. The names Paton, Byrne and Dear don't exactly go down in history amongst the likes of Madden(s), Nicholls and Farmer.
I've often wondered what the Hawks would have done in the 80s if they'd had some Rucking greats. Probably would have won 10 Flags in a row...

In my memory i would say the Big Fish, only prob i have with that is that he does not like to acknowledge Hawthorn, and calls himself a "bomber boy"

I think Peter Everitt was our best in the actual ruck but if we're talking about overall influence on a game I'd say it would have to be either Don Scott or Paul Salmon.

Got a nasty memory of the Albino's rising star nomination(couldn't have been?) and subsequent TV appearance. The horror, the horror....
Salmon, Everitt, Scott.

fish was a bloody good ruckman, & embraced so eagerly/warmly by hawthorn he did the wrong thing by us going back to sheeds. besides I can still remember some of scotties days & he was a "classic" ruckman just like salmon, only shorter & tougher, his record stands more consistant than fish

Who made our team of the century?
It was Paul Salmon from memory?? He was easily our best in the last 25 years..I can't really comment as I haven't seen them all since we started in the VFL 80 years ago!

scotty was the T.O.T.C. ruckman with fish on the bench, spida wasnt wearing brown & gold when the team was made up. backs up what roddy mentioned about our ruck division over the years.
I agree fish was awsome, just not as passionate, long serving or hard as scotty therefore not as consistant.
still gotta love the way fish would drift along the halfback line chopping off opposition attack. Classic ruckwork:thumbsu::thumbsu:

It has to be Don Scott. Spida great but not at club long enough.
Fish drove me mad. I acknowledge his great tap work and his drifting across the backline, but everytime he fronted a pack he ducked his head and played for the free kick. Did my head in it did. 6ft 10 and 3ft wide, ya dont duck ya head.
Funnily enough he rarely got the free kick!
ps re Spida. Cant wait till we play Sydney this year. Even though they'll prob flog us, i reckon spida will really cop it.

Seriously, Don Scott was a great ruckman, and thoroughly deserved his selection as 1st Ruck in the Team of the Century. Spida was probably a more classic ruckman, but Scotty was magnificent.

The Hawthorn Way for the first 70 years has been: who needs ruckmen................

Interesting what we term as "classic ruckwork" these days, while in his time at hawthorn he did play more of a conventional role, I allways saw spida as an innovator of modern ruckwork, his attack & forward work with the saints borded on revolutionary, while he still attacked well for us, he added the classic role later to his game. great way to describe don "magnificent"
