A poll to gauge whether or not people feel Headland was in the right to react like that to a slur (allegedly) made about his daughter.

Is sledging to this extent allowable in the AFL?

Neither were in the right.

Neither were in the right.

Thats what i would have said. But in answer to the exact poll question (which wasnt the thread question) Selwood was definately in the wrong.

What is alleged to have been said is way over the top. Sexual comments about 6yo girls is crossing the line. Had he said something like 'you play like the girl on your arm' or something like that that's acceptable.

Stupid poll as neither did the "right" thing. The poll question doesnt even talk about Des, so i will vote "no- Selwood overstepped the mark". Stupid poll though.

Selwood was out of line !!!

But Des deserves his suspension

If selwood knew he would be jumped he wouldn't have said it, he obviously said something he might say to anyone and then just get under their skin, however hedland has chucked a psycho, maybe he misheard/took the comment wrongly, who knows really but this seems the most obvious series of events to me.

I said this on another poll as well.

He's a good kid. I don't have an issue at all with what he said. Warney would have said worse than that and Warne is the closest thing we have to royalty. It was a sledge, people need to relax a little. I'm sure Selwood didn't sleep with Des's daughter and I'm sure she isn't a ****, if she was then it might be a little close to home. The whole point of a sledge is to put a player off his game, mission accomplished.

I can't beleive peoples reactions to this.

Most confusing thread title / poll question combination ever.

For those who have voted yes I just hope that you've misinterpreted the question (based on the thread title).

If those alleged words are true, then selwood has gone overboard. Headlead had a right to go crazy about it because it was mentioned that Headland had warned selwood that if the abuse continued he would kill him.

If people went around always belting others because of WORDS, then this world would be in utter chaos, or South Australia.

As stated in another thread, lack of education doesn't help this matter.

You're asking two questions.

Headland was undoubtedly in the right - A man insulted his daughter and he hit him.

However, that doesn't mean that Headland shouldn't also have to wear the punishment that is entailed in that.

We are all entiled to our opinion on this matter. I have a little girl and if someone called her a **** on the footy feild I would know exactly what they were trying to do, get under my skin and I wouldn't bite for a second. Laugh it off, by reacting your giving them exactly what they want. This is football not Friday night at the pub where you need to defend the honour of your family, have you ever played the game this sort of thing goes on all the time.

You better toughen up champ, sticks and stones.

And giantroo pull your head in do you think Selwood really feels that way about Des's kid. It was a remark to put him off his game and it worked.

If you'd accept a comment about your daughter like that then you're the one who better toughen up fella. If standing up for your daughter when someone says something like that is not what you'd do then go on you for being piss weak. If thats not worth defending then nothing is ...champ.

Headland, IMO, was in some way in the right.

I don't have kids (I am only 14) but that doesn't matter, if he had said something like that about a 6 yo, then I woulda smashed him, too.

And would even go after the game to look for blood, that is totally unacceptable by Selwood.

Des Headland doesn't really deserve the 8 weeks or whatever he got for what he did.

Your missing the point, it was on the footy field. This sort of thing happens all the time on the field but most people just let it go. Like on these forums people get stirred up and have a go at each other it should be water off a ducks back. If you posted on hear something about my daughter it wouldn't phase me at all, you don't even know her and I don't know you so I don't care what you say.

This was done face to face - of course he was going to react, and probably in a physical way. Clearly not everyone thinks it's alright to talk about another players daughter like that (just check the number of threads / posts about it all). I understand that we're all entitled to our own opinions (including you) but my point is if you're not going to defend your kids when someone says something like that then you're the weak one. Bloody hell, she's 6.

It was on the footy feild and they are just meaningless words. We will just have to disagree on this one tiger.

It is a national offence to even joke about sexually assaulting anybody, let alone a 6 yr old girl, which is phedphoilia. Selwood should have to face Court over this.

Get your facts right Headcase made the comment to Drew Banfield on the side lines a half hour after the game had finished. A umpire who will/might testify tonight heard Headcase tell Selwood the tatt was of his daughter, he did not hear selwood call his daughter a S###.

Hedcase is the only person in the wrong atm and until tonight we won't know if Selwood is guilty. Besides I believe the context in which it was said is important if he said "Des your 6 yr old daughter is a s### & I f##### her last night" he needs to be disiplined. But if he said " I ****ed that s### last night " not knowing who's face it was, fair bump play on.
And people who find s### & f### offensive are F###### prudes.
I had a bloody good laugh at Brauny slip up! F####### good job mate.

How the f### do you know what was said? You have no idea what was said neither does anyone else except for Selwood so stop making shyte up moron.

Nothing is below the belt on the football field (except rasicm) thats why girls don't play the game. If can't deal with the fact that this type of sledging is part of the game and has been for 140 years, go play that girls game called soccer.

The question of the thread is far different from the question in the poll

Selwood was wrong if what Des' suggests Selwood has said is true

However, Des is in the wrong for his reaction

If he didnt get so aggressive though I highly doubt as many people would believe him over Selwood and the 'guilty until innocent' mentailty in this case would not be so clear

That is why MOST west coast supporters like using the word allegedly until the tribunal

Of course, with most supporters on here its guilty until proven innocent
