Anyone see the Herald Sun snippet this morning (page 71) where they claim Mark Robinson as the inventor of the 'Tomahawk' nickname? Wouldn't it have been people here on BigFooty? I remember a thread discussing nicknames...
media hype again, yes hawkins will be a star but prismall was the better player on the weekend and deserved to be nominated for sure, what games were these clowns watching!

I can't be exactly sure - but from the top of my head, he debuted mis last season. I don't think he worked his way to more than 10 games last season.
He qualifies under the age bracket.

I remember starting a thread about this topic when it was confirmed that Tom Hawkins was going to be father/son at GFC in 07. tho im sure Tom would have had his nickname throughtout high school or summin. It's jus an obvious nickname if i've ever seen one...anyone wat is certain is that mark robinson surely cannot claim to be the inventor of the Tomahawk nickname, not b4 me anyway :P.

It first got a run in this thread http://bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5342060&highlight=Tomahawk#post5342060
But even this thread mentions that the name had been raised on SEN already.

nah, he's definitely eligible.
I thought he should have got the nomination this week, but still good to see Hawkins get it.

Well done to Hawkins on getting the rising star nomination! Selwood and Prismall both played well and you'd have thought with Prismall playing a cracker and bobbing up with two goals that he'd have got the nomination, still plenty of time though :) Varcoe and Djerrkura are eligible too, yeah?

Matty Spencer? I think he may be too old.
It's less to do with being too old than it is to do with being unable to win a rising star medal when you are already a star!:D
Prissa was stiff given the 4-quarter effort he put in.
Oh well, this thread was due sooner or later.

We had a fair few in 2002/2003 with the 2001 draft lot such as Bartel, Kelly etc.
Well done Tom, unlucky Brent.
maybe bomber took hawkins off to hose him down. surely if he was in the square all game he would've kicked six or seven. exciting talent.
brent prismall is all quality as well.
dont be surprised if varcoe and selwood sneak in for a mention.
i dont think we have a player that can win the rising star though.
you think it would be someone like gibbs who is likely to play all year. there's more competition at geelong for a the young blokes' spots.

Good article in the Age this morning.
For fans, a day in the sunshine can't wait for tomorrow
John Harms | April 17, 2007
THE Geelong coaching staff's decision to interchange Tom Hawkins at the 15-minute mark of the second quarter against Melbourne on Sunday symbolises precisely what is wrong with modern footy. Too often, footy loses its sense of context, its sense of perspective, its sense of what sport is about for fans (and for players), its sense of the moment.
Consider this. Geelong has a miserable season in 2006. Fans are upset. But they continue to attend matches, hoping the team will click. It doesn't. It finishes 10th.
They hope things will be different in 2007. They still buy their memberships. They derive a good share of their hope from young Tom Hawkins, son of Jumping Jack. He isn't selected for the opening round. Geelong is beaten by the Western Bulldogs. Fans are concerned that round one is actually round 23 of the previous season.
Hawkins is selected for the round-two match against Carlton. In the half-hour before the footy is bounced at the Telstra Dome, there are two topics of conversation among Geelong people. One: bewilderment ("We could win this by 10 goals or lose by 10 goals"). The other: Tom Hawkins.
The Cats take the game on. It rains goals. Hawkins buckets three of them. He times his leads. He has strong hands. He can kick. Fans are happy, not just with Hawkins, but with the whole team.
On Sunday, Geelong fans head to the MCG. Demons fans joke that Geelong people can't help themselves: the lid is off and space is being made next to the 1963 premiership cup. But the same deep-seated doubt gnaws away at Cats people: will we be OK today?
Geelong's form holds: explosive play-on footy prevails. Hawkins nails the first goal. The Cats dominate. In the opening minutes of the second quarter, David Wojcinski breaks clear with a swerve and three bounces, finds Brent Prismall, who pops a squaring ball towards Hawkins. Hawkins sags, gives himself the sit, flies and marks. He plays on and goals. The fans are out of their seats. ("This bloke is smart.")
Minutes later, with all the space in the world, he anticipates David Johnson's possession. Waits. Leads. And takes the ball out in front. He thumps home another one. The fans are loving this: Hawkins looks the goods, and the boys are five goals up and playing beautiful footy in the sunshine.
Hawkins leads again. He marks and goals. He has four. And that's when he is called over to the bench.
Section M55 of the MCG is not happy. Some applaud affectionately, but many yell: "What? Let the kid play. Let him enjoy himself. He's a footballer: let him play football."
The feeling around is that everyone has been denied. We want more. We want to enjoy this moment for a little longer. We want Tom Hawkins to revel in this moment, to feel as if all the years of striving have come to something. And to kick five for the quarter. But the game changes. The moment has passed.
I just don't get it. Surely these are the moments we wait for, moments which are all the more poignant because they contain the past (joys and sorrows), the present and a glimpse of the future. And, cut all the philosophising, they're just bloody brilliant to watch.
I'm not sure what the message was. The coach may have been showing us he's in control. But that's easier to do when you're six goals clear.
Perhaps the club is concerned a young player may be spoiled by too much early success? Perhaps they're preserving his body? I don't know, but give me today. I'm fed up with sport getting us ready for tomorrow. Just give me today.
Couldn't agree more.

"You don't think we have a player that can win the rising star". Hello we have THEE player who can win It. And dont say he's only played two games blaa' blaa', This guy is more of a chance to win than any one.
Plus we have the classiest youngster who would have to be one of the best user of the ball in the AFL.

Good article, but unfortunately it ignores the realities of sport these days - the transcendent qualities of the game are beholden to the more practical. It's a balance that is tipping further towards the practical as the game becomes more and more professional. All we can do is watch and hope we get to see more of our young guns.

Add Gamble and that is it. (there are others but they are unlikely).
I'd put money on Prismall & Selwood getting one. The others are long shots as I can't see them getting a lot of games.

Tom lifts season goals
18 April 2007 Herald-Sun
Scott Gullan
GIVEN the hype and excitement which followed his drafting, Tom Hawkins had remarkably low expectations of his first season in the AFL.
Hawkins had aimed to play one game in his debut year. After doubling that by Round 3 and claiming the NAB Rising Star Award nomination in the process, the teenage superstar is looking to re-assess his goals.
He now thinks five games will be a good result but coach Mark Thompson is confident he'll play a lot more as long as his mind and body holds up to the rigours of AFL football.
"We can't say we want him to play eight or 10, if he played them all that would be great," Thompson said. "The monitoring systems now in clubs are really technical, detailed and individual. We will just keep an eye on him, if he is pulling up well and worthy of a game then we will play him."
After kicking three goals on debut against Carlton, Hawkins kicked four first-half goals against Melbourne on Sunday with Thompson admitting the Cats' father-son draftee was exceeding expectations.
"I didn't think he would be doing what he is doing," Thompson said. "He was pretty sensational early in the game against Melbourne."
He defended his decision to drag Hawkins after his fourth goal with some commentators suggesting he did it to help keep the lid on the hype surrounding his full-forward.
"That is just ridiculous, I would love him to kick eight goals," he said. "We took him off because we noticed he was getting tired."
The 18-year-old admitted he blew up in the second half against the Demons and had a long way to go to be physically ready to run out games.
"On the weekend I was struggling a bit," Hawkins said. "In the last quarter I was absolutely buggered, I couldn't run. The pace and strength of the players is something completely different.
"The pace of the game is so much different from what I am used to and probably having that little setback (when he started developing a stress fracture in his leg) at the start of the year didn't help. I am just trying to get back into at the moment, get a bit match fit and play some more games hopefully."
While Carlton coach Denis Pagan has labelled him the next Tony Lockett, Hawkins is determined to stay level headed.
"I have only played two games so I think they are getting a bit ahead of themselves," he said. "He is a great player and I don't know if I can be compared to him yet."
Looks like Bomber is conceding that if Tom is up to it he will get played more this season than originally planned maybe? But I love this quote:
"I have only played two games so I think they are getting a bit ahead of themselves," he said. "He is a great player and I don't know if I can be compared to him yet."
Tom says you can't compare me to Lockett...yet! I love that little bit of self belief and confidence he has just in that one statement. :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

If his form warrants I'd want to see him playing. He is an exciting talent but his fitness was definitely lacking towards the end of the Melbourne game, he could hardly run.

It's good to hear that they'll play him as much as they can. It seems a little silly to play a new bloke for 10-12 games like they were saying if they are ready to do more than that. That said, I can't see him playing every game. I would say closer to 16 or 18, though, and if we make the finals it might be sensible to rest him closer to the finals to keep him fresh for them. But that's a fair way off so we'll see.
