King returns to face Hawks

Richie Pace for Geelong Football club

News

Geelong has recalled premier ruckman Steven King for its clash with Hawthorn in Launceston on Sunday. King has been named along with Mathew Stokes, who returns after serving a four game suspension, Charlie Gardiner, Nathan Ablett and Kane Tenace.
King missed the opening of the season after picking up a slight calf strain in the final pre-season game against Melbourne. He came back last weekend through the VFL, gathering 23 possessions against Tasmania in Hobart.
“He’s our number one ruckman, he’s an All Australian and best & fairest winner, and we want him back in the side playing good football,” Cats’ coach Mark Thompson said.
“The plan was always to give him a good run out in the reserves last week, get him through that then bring him back.”
Stokes was suspended following Geelong’s win against Port Adelaide in the NAB Cup in Darwin. Stokes was the first player suspended under the new rules for front on-head high contact, a rule that was vigorously enforced in the pre-season.
Brad Ottens will miss with a sore hip, while Travis Varcoe drops back to the VFL after kicking three goals in two AFL matches.
Geelong must trim the 25 man squad to 22 players on Friday afternoon.

I wonder how sore that hip really is

Hopefully Stokes will come in for Byrnes as the third change.

edit: Byrnes is in the 18 thus cannot be dropped, how shitful.

Its great shitful isnt sensored out :D

I reckon Charlie might play, Hawkins cannot go an entire game, neither can King so the likelihood of him being used as a resting forward is unlikely. Thye might need Charlie to play off the bench as a revolving forward.

Yep that's what i'd do.

Although don't write Gardiner off as being a late inclusion for Ablett again.

I'll reserve that call until I know Nathan will definitely play. On face value, that seems to be the primary reason Charlie's sitting on the extended pine.

I don't know who he'd replace within that (bench) line-up. King will return, Prismall won't (and can't) be dropped after last week, Stokes will be the straight swap for Varcoe, and my money would be on DJ retaining his spot ahead of the others. Hard to squeeze.

I/C: King, Prismall, Stokes, DJ?

I don't think Gardiner will get a run, as we can run with two forwards on at any one time. Mooney and Nathan are fit enough to stay on for 3/4 of the match each, leaving Hawkins to make up a half of football.

Why can't he be dropped if he's named in the 18?

I agree with thats. I think Chalie is only there just in case of Nablett not being able to play. And i think Selwood will be rested, because thats what they wanted to do with him last week but didn't get the chance to rest him. And who cares about Tenace.

It'd have to be King in for Ottens, and Stokes in for Varcoe one would assume.

I'm getting sick of Bomber persisting with Byrnes though.

Why can't he be dropped if he's named in the 18?

The AFL states that only players in the I/C bench can be dropped, not those in the starting 18. The only way a person can be changed in the starting 18, is like what happened last weekend, where Nathan missed out, and Selwood got the bench run.

How it works out is that the bench player is pushed up in to the 18, then the emergency is pushed up onto the bench.

Thems the rules.

The problem is his best is nowehere near good enough. His disposal would be amongst the worst in the league.

fair enough Byrnes has a big kick but it's only useful when it hits a target... he misses more goals than my career path...

Tend to disagree, whilst tommorrow night by 6pm the i/c must be reduced to 4 players and emergencies, the rules on including an emergency can be done up until 45 mins before game time with no sanctions after that there must be a reason ( ie N Ablett last week injured during warm up.)

Unless the team has been updated in the last short while, I'd agree with those who said Gardiner, Selwood and Tenace to be dropped from the extended bench. Selwood will have his week off and I don't know that the others deserve to be brought in, though I did hear Tenace did well in the twos. Should probably be taking Byrnes' place but Bomber seems to love Shannon so what can ya do.

I dont have a problem with his name or size, I have a problem with his skills and football smarts. Little article in the herald sun yesterday talking about players accuracy, to qualify you had to have had 25 shots on goal in your career, Shannon Byrnes has the worst conversion rate of any player with more than 25 shots on goal in the AFL. He has kicked 14. 31.

Now ask yourself, is that the kind of return we want from a crumbing forward? That is miles worse than Kent ever was and he used to cop it bad, heck, kents accuracy is miles better than the tripe Shannon serves up.

Having a crack might get you respect in the local leagues, but this is the AFL and you need to bring more than that here if you want to have any longevity.

Gee, that's a condemning stat isn't it? And really, the shots he misses are not all that hard in many cases. Just can't see why he gets a gig each time... I hope Bomber replaces him with Stokes when he's fully back.

You wouldn't think they would not play Stokes. Stokes will be a strait swop for Varcoe. Without one of Varcoe and Stokes we lack a crumber up forward. Neither Tenace or Byrnes can do that job. And that is what we lacked against the Doggies in round one, someone putting pressure on the doggies out of the backline.

I'd have thought Stokes in too, but go to the afl site and click on the gamelive thingy and click on the cats players stats and it names the 22. It does this most weeks, and is usually right.

Best option taken. King for Ottens speaks for itself.Stokes for Varcoe was always going to happen, the kid will get plenty of chances later on.
Sellwood was going to be rested last week,so no surprise. Ablett automatic inclusion. The selectors have done well.
