View Full Version : Jobe needs a spell in the reserves until he learns to kick

I'm gonna get flamed for this but the guys foot skills are discracefull.
I agree his handball is classy most of the time but even then he puts team mates under pressure with his obsessive compulsive handball disorder.
This pains me to say as his old man is my all time favourite footballer and i'd love nothing more than for Jobe to be a gun but im seeing trouble ahead for him if he cant correct his kicking.

He's a bloody good player, but it's a shame his kicking lets him down.
His handballing is sensational however.
I think Watson will retain his place in the starting 22.
Who comes out for JJ?

Has to Heff

Has to Heff
Heff deserves to keep his spot in the team imo, it will be dyson most likely.
Jetta should clearly be dropped as he has lost all confidence now.
Depends on who else plays well is the reserves and who pulls up poorly as to other changes.
Dyson and Heff would be on shaky ground, depending on matchups etc

Yeah, that's the most likely option. Maybe Jetta?
Played well though Dyson.
Johns was solid without being a star, got limited gametime but i just don't see why we need him in the team right at this moment.
There are so many players yet to come back into this team that deserve spots.

Nearly forgot about his game, needs to be dropped to get his confidence back.

I thought he was very poor except for the odd patch here and there
A couple of those mistakes were horrible but we have to persevere with Jobe.
The kicking thing is a confidence thing dropping him to the vfl wont hope that. The saints have a very strong midfield and Jobe with 10 contested possesions was one of the reasons why we broke even in that department.

Really?
I thought he played a good game considering his limited gametime.
In and under around the packs and a great run through the midfield, and a supurb kick running full pace onto the chest of one of our forwards.
Looks like he may get ommited come this week though.
I dont think he needs a spell, he just needs to be taught how to kick. Everything else is fine, they all looked stuffed by 3 quarter time, so evidently...their skills levels are bound to drop acutely due to fatigue.
In all fairness to Jetta, he didnt have a great deal of game time, but a spell in the VFL would help him out. Then again, with such a short break, we all need all the help we can get in the middle in regards to speed...hard to toss up. Id say give the boy a run on ANZAC Day just to be sure, especially if the Pies continue to play some of their kids.

Heff will be in for ANZAC Day, agree with Dyson not showing much though....only thing that would save him would be if Hird or Monfries pull up too sore for Wednesday.

You're not wrong. A few of us sitting together up on the wing kept saying 'this could go anywhere' whenever he wound up to drop it onto his boot.

They did look a bit groggy...
Should be fine though.
Now, i didn't see much of the first half and i didn't see Hille in the second half.
Was he injured and if so, how did he injure himself?

the thing is with some of you **** wits is that you will always pick up on his mistakes, look at his stats for the last year, you will always pick on the 2 or 3 bad kicks per game but how bout the other 20 possies that are effictive, i think you should just all lay off him, he is great with contested possies

Before you go shooting your mouth off any further, we all acknowledge his assets, but his kicking is dreadful. As the game progresses, he's going to need to learn to kick.....he's a professional footballer. It's his job to be able to do it properly.

He seemed find to me, I didnt notice anything...got to the game 10 mins into the 1st quarter, so unless something happened there.....unless anyone can fill us all in on the matter.
There was one point that I was very impressed with Jobes kicking today when he was on half back, in the middle of a pack and he spotted up Stanton forty metres away. This was in the latter part of the third quarter when the game was on the line. Did anyone else see it??

I watched him closely first half and he was a spectator most of the time.

As for Jobe.... he's starting to become a worry with his possessions.
We'll have to persist with him as he does get the pill and is very good at clearances.

I think you should settle down.
We have been discussing Jobe, long before you arrived.
Whether they are right or wrong everyone is allowed their opinion and because it differs from your doesn't make them ****wits.
I've seen a few of your posts that i believe qualify you for some name calling, but that hasn't happened has it?

thanks mate well done on your bet too i bad a lazy $500 on it to:thumbsu:
His kicking has been ordinary and i am having a few doubts but when he is getting the most contested footy i guess you have to overlook the mistakes. It is bloody frustrating as he can kick the footy better than he is currently.

jobe is great in the centre.. his kicking really annoys me, if JJ wasnt there ready to return then i would never drop jobe, but JJ is as good as jobe at getting the ball and creating clearences and has a lot better kick so i think jobe out in JJ would be alright. but with the injuries that have came out of the game vs saints i wouldnt think jobe would be dropped

Lets not beat around the bush here, his kicking atm is atrocious.
To those bagging dysons game, he played ok and was on and off the bench all game.
He will play on Anzac day.

Well said.
He spent the majority of the match on the pine yet still racked up 13 possies and had a couple of goal assists. The fact he should have fresh legs come ANZAC day will mean he wont be dropped.

Jobe just coughs the ball up consistently under pressure, he even dropped a few easy marks today when he thought he was under the pump. Needs a spell in the 2s definately

A good stat for jobe today was how many contested posessions he got, 11 in total (most on ground)

I think Jobe is our best contested possession winner - even more-so then Jason Johnson going by last year. When I heard him on Bomber radio, he admitted that he needed to work on his disposals - so he's aware of what his weakness is.
As for Jobe.... he's starting to become a worry with his possessions.

I agree.. I don't think dropping him will help.. He just needs some intense skills coaching. His poor foot skills shoulda been picked up way way way before now.

Not wrong, you have to wonder whether he'd gain his confiedence in the slower moving VFL or just by sticking with him, his contested possessions are certainly helpfull

I was watching the Ess - Stk game.
Dyson was good, he got limited gametime and spent half of it on the bench.
Got more than 10 disposals, kept his man reletively quiet and had some score assists.

He got limited game time because when he was out there he offered very little.
He looked like he was day dreaming.
He got a few cheap possessions in the last few minutes when the game was over and we were playing keepings off.
If it wasn't for a few injuries I'd say he'd be lucky to hold his spot in the team. He is quickly running out of chances.
He is struggling to kick a drop punt at the moment which is a concern.
He needs to play and work on it and at the moment a player should be running past him whenever he gets the ball so he can lay it off by hand...

And that's exactly why he'll play on Wednesday.
JJ won't play and without him, Jobe (and Hird) is our best inside player.
If we didn't have a three day break and had a full list to choose from, Jobe would be in trouble. And that's good for us, because we're developing some depth.
He'll get better.

What leads you to believe JJ won't play?
Jobe doesnt need to be dropped, just needs to get back to basics with his kicking. If JJ were to return, Jobe could perhaps be used behind the ball and be forced to move it forward by foot...hopefully with time to drop it onto his boot correctly.

We/he won't make the same mistake as last year.
We/he won't make the same mistake as last year.
I can see your point, but JJ was terrific last week and if he has a good run around today I see no reason to hold him back. If he looks ready, play him. So far, he's looked ready and they should be looking for final confirmation in the VFL today.
I expect him to play on ANZAC Day.

I'll just about put my house on him not playing.

There have already been several quotes saying JJ wont be playing until after Anzac Day. Like Longy has said he wont be playing Anzac day and has never been a chance to.

I really don't think Jobe needs to bbe dropped. Playing in the VFL won't make his kicking better. Playing tackers won't make his kicking better. He just needs to work harder on it at training. If that means staying on the ground after training for 10 minutes to just kick 50 different length kicks, so be it. He just needs to put in some extra effort on the training track IMO.

I think too many people tend to focus on his cuople of terrible shanks (and they were terrible).
However - the 11 contested possie stat says it all - it is all well and good to have runners, but without inside mid's they are useless. Jobe has to work on his kicking no doubt - you can see it affectuing his confidence, but he just has to work harder. Since smokin joe retired we have been schite in the middle - he has helped to change that.
JJ Watons Hird and Pev - a good mix of ball winners to rotate through - the best teams have 3 or 4 extractors.
Dyson for mine is the one on thin ice. Needs to do more - he is supposedly quick yet he looks reluctant to run.
I think its disgraceful, the son of a legend cant kick a footy. Its a basic requirement of an AFL footballer, who are chosen to be the most elite in the country to be able to do something as simple as kick a football.

Exactly what I reckon also. Time for JJ to come back in or blood Hislop.
Honestly we were too top heavy today meaning we did not have enough run through our midfield. That meant that when Jobe had the ball he often didn't have players running in support or decent targets up the ground. No wonder he didnt look confident when he had the ball. I only had one 'Oh Jobe' moment today (When his pass towards the top of our 50 was intercepted). But there was counless incidents where other players kicks resulted in turnovers, yet I don't hear complaints about them because Jobe is our new whipping boy. Here is the small players that should be ahead of Jobe on the chopping block:
Heffernan
Dyson
Mark Johnson
Slattery
Please tell me why any of these players deserve their spot mor than Jobe.

Got it one dude. Although I am a fan of Slats, i reckon he's gonna be a bit of a nutcase. Hard at the man and the ball.

Ok, I agree with you that Jobe is ahead of those players listed. Got that.. I was also saying that I like the way Slats goes about it. Admittedly he needs to get more of the ball, but i think he is our best young stopper at the moment. And he seems to have no regard for his own safety ie goes hard at it. Comprende.
Never seen a player not want to kick so much. When you are in a position to attack he slows the team down so much. Just needs to kick the bloody thing and he'd be a much better player!
