View Full Version : SANFL Round 3
portentous

Doesn't look like anyone's started one, so thought I'd post my thoughts on today's Port vs Sturt game.
I'd rather not dwell on the result which was largely contributed to by Port's inaccuracy, Sturt kicking goals out of their arses, and the ineptitude of 3 people in white who have NFI about the rules nor spirit of the game.
Anyway of the Port Afl-listed boys, I thought that Deluca started really well but drifted out of it a bit in the second half, Chappy was pretty good, but gave away a couple of frees for stupid things and his disposal was "iffy" at times. I thought Thommo had a good game, although he was hard to pick out at times. (they all look much the same in powder blue!) His disposal looked good though, from what I could see (a lot of play was on the outer wing and I was in the stand)
For Port, again Summerton had a good game, along with J Clayton, Dolling and a few others. Quite a few of the senior players had shockers though I thought.
Overall, Port played well below par, Sturt played well- yet the maggies were pretty unlucky (and errant in front of goals) to lose it.
Others might disagree, but I was regularly distracted by trying to figure out WTF the umps were doing. Not even the players knew for much of the game.

There was some discussion in the team selection thread.
I thought Chaplin was quite ordanairy. A couple of times he lost Clive when he drifted up the field and his disposal WAS ordanairy. Thompson was ok but I agree with you bout the guernsys :p. I liked Deluca out of the three Port boys. Was fantastic with his tapwork and his kicking was quite impressive.

According to SAFooty, Matt Thomas took a ripper of a grab.

Matt Thomas is a gun of epic proportions. He was the best for Norwood today and by quite a distance. He didn’t stop trying all day while the rest of his teammates didn’t even seem to care. Words cannot describe how good this guy is.

According to the same source that RL quoted Ali Carlile took an even bigger speccie!

Yeah I heard that, 3 huge screamers today... this is missing from AFL footy these days.
I am biased but it was a great day to be at Alberton. The crowd was good , 5-7000 and they were into the spirit of the game
Have to agree with the umpiring. Its getting harder and harder to understand what they see that I dont. Mostly good but its the shockers that left me scratching my head... paid 3 x legging...ok no problems then left the blatant one in the last quarter...and the farce in the last quarter that saw the ball get passed back and forwards between the Sturt and Port boys in Ports forward line left EVERYONE scratching their heads until the umpires took it 60m up the ground
I will praise one umpire for a brave decision ... one of the Port boys attempted a mark and the umpire blew his whistle before he controlled it... realised he dropped it and called for the bounce.

In the reserves saw Alex Lee who is a big strapping lad and was played at CHB alongside Peter Hardy on the HB flank. They look like good mates as they had plenty of time to talk things over because the ball spent most of the day in their forward line.
In the main game Chaplin was on Clive, Deluca obviously in the ruck and Thomson tagger/taggee with Dolling. I thought that Deluca had much the better of Mieklejohn, but was temporarily blunted by Batson. Chaplin was more comfortable when Clive worked inside the 50 instead of roaming about further up the field. I thought that Thomson was shaded by Dolling until Dolling went on tilt and got himself reported.

I agree. It was a beautiful day to be alive and at the footy.

I like Cockshell, but he was close to worst on ground yesterday.

Continues to impress.
Keep your eye out for Levi Greenwood in the ressies. Has been burning it up, basically best on ground every week. Has just turned 18, is 185cm and weighs 90kg. Very much in the Wilson mould. I think he'd be a perfect fit with the Power.

Darren Trevena's SANFL round up is on the Port Board.

Matty Thomas would be a chance for selection, given he made the emergencies for the woods game on the back of Norwood's bye. Obviously he played well, and his workrate gets a mention (as does his improved kicking). Might depend on the availability of Pearce and Motlop.
Boak did have 41 possessions in the 2s and his workrate also gets highlighted.
Fabian scored 'player of the round' but I'd expect the likelihood of rain (and possibly Brogan's return) would delay his selection.
Liked Wayne Weidemann's comments as reported in the tiser (http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,21603573-21546,00.html)about big Bruce Willits too.
The 197cm key-position Willits launched two balls out of the ground in a defiant return to Glenelg after leaving the club three weeks ago to pursue a forward role. "And good on him," West coach Wayne Weidemann said. "He's had no more than two hours' training with us on a Thursday night in the past two weeks, hardly knows anyone at the club but if there was a day he was going to fire up, it would be a day like today."

Yup. Crucial performance by Bruce. Hes been given a lot of stick in the last two weeks. To kick 3 goals against the Bays was a great effort.
