View Full Version : UFC 71 - May 26th - Chuck v Rampage
Card isn't officially settled as yet but i got this off ufc junkie as the rumoured card:
* Champion Chuck Liddell vs. Quinton Jackson (for light heavyweight championship)
* Josh Burkman vs. Karo Parisyan
* Keith Jardine vs. Houston Alexander
* Chris Leben vs. Kalib Starnes
* Jeremy Stephens vs. Din Thomas
* James Irvin vs. Thiago Silva
* Terry Martin vs. Ivan Salaverry
* Sean Salmon vs. Eric Schaffer
* Wilson Gouveia vs. Carmelo Marrero
My mouth is salivating and i want to see iceman cannon him right on the button to knock his arse tfo. If chuck can win convincingly then it more or less eliminates the major influencing legend of how Pride was so much superior to UFC.
lots of good fighters on the undercard and some i admit i never heard of, but thats cool cause i like seeing fresh fish because they are unpredictable and i feel excited that they could be the next big thing aka gonzaga the human cannon.

Yes because when Rampage left Pride he was totally dominant....
People seriously need to get over the whole Pride/UFC thing. its about fighters not companies.

I think you misunderstood me, I agree it's about fighters not orgs. I guess that chip on my shoulder is born from resentment at pride fanboys who always used to spruik Pride being so superior to UFC largely on the back of that defeat of Liddell by Jackson in 2003. The fact Jackson wasn't the best in Pride meant the huggers would use their MMA maths to deduce Silva was far superior to Liddell because he was better than Jackson and Jackson had beat Chuck, thus Pride had better fighters than the UFC.
Just look at the ranking still to this day on mmaweekly, Fedor Nog Barnett Crocop were 1,2,3,4 then Randy Sylvia Arlovski next, well we just saw Mirko get ktfo by Gonzaga so what's to say Fedor wouldn't get his head caved in by Gonzaga too? Lindland nearly had Fedor in trouble early and Randy would school Lindland no sweat.
I think this bickering will die down after 6-12 months but it's hard to forget so quickly all the pride huggers so arrogant and assumptive that pride was just point blank clearly better than UFC.
Rampage to KO chuck in the first 20 seconds.
Only because that is the most unlikely result I can think of.
so what's to say Fedor wouldn't get his head caved in by Gonzaga too?Fedor has never been ko'ed in MMA competition. Not by Hunt,Crocop,Nog,Randleman etc
Right as of now Fedor is the best not just in HW but p4p
I would say that Gonzaga would not KO Fedor

What fight were you watching? Fedor dominated Lindland :)

Don't worry about all that. Anyone's entitled to agree or disagree with all that Pride v UFC stuff. 6 months ago I would have said overall Pride had better fighters than the UFC, today, I'd say the UFC has better fighters than Pride. In the end it's just opinion. If you don't agree, its no biggie ;)
I don't really like Chuck, I don't know why though. Who's going in as favourite this time?
To Deej- Do you really think Gonzago would be able to do that against Fedor?
What happens if Rampage schools Chuck? Do you then bow down and admit you're wrong about PRIDE dominance? Seriously dude, why risk making your self look like an arse?

Put it this way, I don't think Fedor would be the monty champion in the UFC like everyone makes out. I wouldn't be confident betting either way in that fight.
Fedor is this giant aura of a guy, created by pride fans who also created the aura of pride being so much superior to ufc on virtually every level. Diaz wupped Gomi who was supposedly the best at 160 and Diaz wasn't the top of the tree in UFC. I just think the aura thing was a myth and it may ring true about Fedor too. What if, all along, Fedor wasn't any better than just a contender level fighter at the UFC? I'm not saying that's 100% the case, but it may not be any more crazy to say than there being 5 Pride hw's better than anyone in the UFC either.

It won't happen, not like the way Gonzaga ko'd CC. I'll be surprised if Rampage wins but then i've never said UFC is far superior. All i'm saying is i dont think pride is or ever was.

That's what everyone said about Mat Serra and GSP but look what happend. It's not isolated to pride.
PRIDE was better. The UFC just picked up their game. Intoduced TUF, lifted their profile in the US, started to make some money and be able to put up for some good contracts. Don't worry about Crocop, he'll be back and he'll crack some skull. I have no doubt he'll win the UFC heavy weight title if he stays with the UFC. Nothing could be surer

Wouldn't write him off but he'd need to make some serious improvement to do it. Plus now he's behind Gonzaga and Sylvia minimum for a title shot. What fight next for CC? Arlovski? That'd be a decent fight i reckon.
So are you tipping Rampage then?:)

No, Chuck is a machine so I think he'll win. It depends which Jackson turns up on the night. The killer or the kitten. Either way I think Chucks got him, though it's been a while since he's stood toe to toe with an out and out brawler. Chucks biggest tests over the last few years have been wrestlers. Liddell by TKO in the 5th.
I think Crocops next fight should be against Sylvia while Gonzaga has a crack at Randy for a title shot. Then the winner of CC v Sylvia gets a shot at the Champ. Randy needs to defend in his title in the next UFC I think.

I'd like to see that same scenario at HW. Arlovski doesnt deserve to be anywhere near a title shot after his performance. Maybe give Andrei Heath Herring in the mean time and the winner of that can fight the loser of Randy/Gonzaga. While Werdum gets the loser of Cro Cop/Sylvia.

I agree with that. I'd like to see Sylvia vs Cro Cop.
With Chuck/Rampage, I also agree that it will depend on which Rampage turns up. Chuck is by far the more consistent fighter, but I believe if both are at their best, Rampage is slightly superior. A rampage who is on-song is devestating.
I also wonder when Nog will fight. I think he'll be very good as HW in the UFC with his style of JJ and the cage. I can easily see him being HW champ.
Jackson looked so ordinary is his last fight, it is hard to see him stepping up to the level required to beat chuck in such a short time. Im hanging to see chuck in there with a good striker...Id love CC to make the rumoured move to 205.

I don't think he was ever the same fighter after the two ko's v Wandi.

Rampage will beat Chuck.
I want to see Big Nog vs Couture.
I don't think he was ever the same fighter after the two ko's v Wandi.
Yep, they were brutal.
he will be up for this fight tho, but he just looked so rusty and flat last time out that I think he needed more fights before taking on Chuck. Which is probably precisely the reason Dana has forced him to fight Chuck now.

What's your tip? I think I can figure it's a chuck win, what about round, method?

Yeah I agree with that. After Dana was on special comments last time as Chuck was being schooled by Jackson at Final Conflict '03, he seemed embarressed that Chuck was getting a caning. Obviously he's rooting for Chuck this time, hence why he'd be pushing for Jackson fight earlier, regardless if he's underdone or not.

Sorry but at the moment no one (Pride or UFC) has a HW to beat Fedor

Chuck by knee bar in the 3rd!
Seriously, Chuck by KO probably in the first, going by how Jackson looked last time out. Looked horrible on his feet.
I am expecting a much better Jackson tho, and at his best he can definitely win the fight as he has proved in the past. Im hoping Rampage, but cant see it.
He may be shot.

yeah, I reckon Chuck by a KO or TKO, but probably in the 2nd or 3rd. Jackson can take a decent beating.
I reckon a fit jackson would be easily a match for Liddell though, so lets hope he shows way more than he did vs Marvin Eastman.
Shogun needs to come to the UFC and show the 205's who's boss :)
Sunday May 27th 12pm on Main Event.
Big John McCarthy - "Chuck are you ready? (yeah) Quinton are you ready? (nod) - (look down and clap) LETS GET IT ON!!!"

I really hope Jacksons brain comes along to this fight and he prepares well to pump up his confidence. I won't say that if it does he can beat him. Just that if it does the fight could be a classic for the ages.

I watched Rampage's win on youtube yesterday and i gotta say if he can repeat that he's in with an excellent chance. He really dominated Chuck in that fight.
But like i said in the other thread i saw Horn's win over Chuck last night too and the Chuck then bares very little resemblence to the fighter he is now.
Or could it be he's fought zero decent strikers lately? Thus exaggerating his record?
Really looking forward to this. Gonna be very interesting.
Time will tell. After the results this year I don't think anything can supprise me.

The entire MMA game has changed since Chuck fought Horn, let alone Chuck's game. Probably not the best measure. His fight vs Jackson however is a fairly good yardstick though because they both have similar game's tom what they will show at UFC71.
In any case, I can't wait.
Couple weeks to go now. Current lines:
Chuck Liddell 1.357
Quinton Jackson 3.200
Karo Parisyan 1.323
Josh Burkman 3.430
I dont think Burkman should be that long, but still wouldnt bet him.
Dont like anything there really, lines seem about ok. Even though Jackson looked horrible last time out, you are laying too much betting Chuck...an improved Jackson will be a tough fight for Chuck.

At those odds i'd be betting on Jackson.
Rampage sends out a message to Chuck, this is good. Jackson's a funny man i'm warming to him. I nearly may barrack for him now.:)

It's fight week, and no talk around these traps!
Latest odds at Pin:
Chuck $1.53
Jackson $2.66
If Jackson keeps coming in, and you can get Chuck anything over $1.60, I may have to chuck a couple beans on the champion.
Jackson just looked so bad last time out.
The official Chute Boxe website said Shogun has signed with the UFC, looks like he'll be the next challenger if Chuck wins here.
Hopefully we get Shogun v Chuck, because that would be huge. Shogun would kill him though.
Rampage's odds for Saturday(Sunday) are pretty damn good, considering it's a 50/50 fight in my eyes.
I think Chuck has got Rampage covered IMHO. Shogun would be a good fight but I think he'd do alright there too. Shogun would be no 100% bet
I've ordered it on main event and i'm set to go. Just hope chuck has trained his arse off for this, considering only 10 weeks ago he supposedly had pneumonia and fell asleep on drugs on that talk show.
Any of you guys know how long it takes to kick tonsilitis? I've had it all week and got my penicillin shot in the saddle yesterday morning and now i'm on the penicillin tablets for a week, but it's already feel a whole lot better and i'm thinking by sunday it might be ok to try a beer or two? What do you guys think? I really enjoy a beer while i watch my MMA especially when it's chucky boy
Since when has illness been related to alcohol? As far as I'm concerned they are exclusive.
Ok, I'm going for an upset. Rampage to pull out the victory! He has a tougher chin than chuck.
Anyway, looking forward to the weekend, this should be huge. I have probably more anticipation for this one than for Hughes/St Pierre #2.
Lets get it on! :thumbsu:

Actually, no I wouldnt. It would be ugly.
Awesome result!!!
Chuck is such an ordinary striker it isnt funny. Extremely fortunate (or by design?) that the UFC 205 division has been filled with blokes who dont know a fish hook from a left hook.
Has to be the most overrated, overhyped fighter in MMA history? Surely.
I dont think Rampage will hold it all that long.
That was a pretty bad result for the UFC after the massive build up prior to this show re MMA v Boxing. Mayweather saying chuck cant fight, Cintron challenging any UFC fighter which Dana backed down from, ESPN finally giving mainstream coverage to MMA showing the weigh in live, ESPN showing an on air debate between ex HBO head and promoter Lou Dibella and Joe Rogun etc.
Chuck, the striker, could have lost in any way, but for the striker to throw such horrible punches then get caught and KO'd with an equally horrible arm punch didnt auger well Im sure.

I saw him that way too, at least little overrated anyway. If you believed the crap Dana talks about Liddell, he's up there with Fedor in p4p!
It was disappointing to have the fight go so short, but I reviewed the past fight, and I really couldn't see anything that chuck had that would hurt Jackson. In the end I really thought Jackson would win. And he did.
I reckon Silva would have smashed Chuck too.
Be interesting to see how Henderson goes in the 205's.
We need shogun in there too :P
Henderson will beat Rampage easily IMHO.
I reckon Silva would have smashed Chuck too.
We may get to find out soon. Dana said he was hoping to get Wanderlei as Chuck's next opponent. I wouldn't rule Chuck out as Silva would come after him and Chuck is at his most dangerous when counterpunching.
I'd love to see the UFC hold a tournament at 205 over a few shows to name a top contender. It'd give us some great matchups and be a chance for someone like Shogun to announce himself in the UFC.
Great event, still can't believe Chuck got knocked out... well not the fact he was actually beaten... but beaten so darn quickly!!
