Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on whether an old mate of mine is still playing for Buchan?

Dean Trewin is his name. He played there a couple of years ago. He was a Premiership player with Wy Yung in the nineties, I think.

I would love to get in contact with him, as it has been about 4 years since I last saw him.

Anybody??????

How is the merger between Omeo and Benambra working out?
They got some great exposure on the ABC the other night and have had big write up in the Herald-Sun.
Good on them.

Yes it is goalie. East Gippsland to be exact. You go to Bairnsdale, through to Bruthen, Ensay, Swifts Creek and then onto Omeo. Beautiful town which I think is the last(ish) stop before Hotham.

5 rounds into the ODFL season and I am happy to say that the Swan Reach footy club is dominating the league. Undefeated in the Seniors and U16's they are looking very strong.

The Buchan Cavemen are really struggling this year only having enough numbers to field a seniors side and Omeo Benambra ( now Alpine Rangers) have weakened since last year in both Seniors and Juniors losing a number of players to the East Gippsland league.

Swan Reach has been strengthened by the Lakes Entrance recruits of the Bulmer brothers (especially Tom at the moment who is carving them up on the half-back flank) and our new coach.

Ever heard of the Buchan Caves?? You should see there jumpers. They look good:

Look closely at the centre of the jumper, yes that is Fred Flinstone. The logo got added to their jumper about 2-3 years ago now and it looks great.

If you put ODFL's best senior sides (Swan Reach & Swifts Creek) in the East Gippy league, they would not place in the finals (top 4) as they wouldn't be able to match it against some of the top teams (Bairnsdale, Wy Yung & Lakes Entrance). The 2 sides would be on same terms as Lindenow or Lucknow who are currently 4th-5th on the ladder The East Gippsland league has some very good competitive sides but have sides that lack as well (Paynesville & Orbost). Overall the East Gippy league is a much stronger league in terms of ability, speed, executing game plans etc. but the Omeo league would beat them in strength, determination and loyalty (East Gippy is all about the money so the richer clubs such as Bairnsdale can afford the better players therefore are the powerhouse teams).

But the Omeo League is much more entertaining to watch. There are a couple of big thugs running around that like a bit of biffo which is great for supporters but not as good for players.

Swan Reach are back favourites for the premiership this year after its huge (and I mean HUGE) win over the Swampies by 266 points with a scoreline of 43.21 279 to Lindenow Sth's 2.1 13.

After finally getting a week off, Swanny gets back a number of quality players back into their side, most notably Nathan Smart who bagged a lazy 8 goals from the centre. But the talk around the league is all about one man. Dougie Edwards. He kicked a remarkable 17 goals to go with his 10 the previous game against the Caveman. Swift's Creek are going to have to find a way of stopping Edwards come finals time and have to also be aware of league leading goalkicker, Tim Cantrill (51). The scary thing is for the other teams is that Swanny is reported to still have at least 5 more players to come back into the squad.

It seems the competition is down to only 2 sides now with the Creekers and Swanny both looking unbeatable at the moment. But the 2 sides do clash one more time before the finals and that will determine who takes out the minor premiership and the advantage heading into finals actions.

Also the Swampies copped another huge belting, this time to Swift's Creek.

Yeah Yatesy won it. Marshall has moved onto Lakes Entrance now and is playing some good footy. He had a reasonable year last year playing his usual in-and-under role being the small yet strong bloke he is, but Yates also had a good year. It was a bit of a surprise him winning it considering some of his teammates also having good years so they could've stole votes of each other.

Yatesy is still playing for Omeo-Benambra this year. Well I should say he was still playing until about half way through the season when he suffered a very gruesome injury (off field) which included a fence wire and his eye......need I say more? (rumour going around that he will never be able to see out of that eye ever again).

The Rock has been out of action since and those Alpine Rangers are missing him dearly on the field along with the absent Hayden Bodycomb who has left the club and is now playing for the Frankston Bombers.

The final 4 is now set and the first week of the finals is to be played next weekend at Ensay. In the senior football Bruthen will play Omeo-Benambra while in the Juniors Swifts Creek take on Bruthen. The losers of these games are eliminated.

All the netball finals will also be played at Ensay with Bruthen looking like the team to beat in the seniors.

SeeTheBombersFlyUp
11th August 2008, 18:54
The first week of finals have been played with the Alpine Rangers losing in "unusual" circumstances to Bruthen. The umpires stopped play towards the end of the 4th quarter and awarded the game to Bruthen after Omeo-Benambra had not enough players on the field to continue the game. This was due to a number of their players being sent-off for mainly swearing and abusive language, but also one case of a stray elbow colliding with a Bruthens player head. Bruthen were in front by 8 points at that stage after Omeo-Benambra had surprisingly spent most of the day in the lead. Marc Latham was in good form kicking 5 goals although he missed a few certainties right in front of goal.

Swifts Creek bet Bruthen in the juniors by nearly 100 points and still have a strong possibilty of winning the flag behind Swan Reach and Omeo. The Swans are the favourite to take out the flag with some talented young players on their list. Omeo are a taller side then the others but Swan Reach can match them with their speed and their strong forward line.

This weeks matches are Swan Reach vs Swifts Creek in the seniors (loser to play Bruthen, winner straight into Grand Final) and in the juniors Swan Reach vs Omeo-Benambra (loser plays Swifts Creek, winner straight into GF).

SeeTheBombersFlyUp
20th August 2008, 19:25
A somewhat of a surprise weekend it was with Swifts Creek defeating Swan Reach by 5 goals up at Ensay on the weekend. The Creek started on fire kicking 6 goals to 2 in the first quarter and never looked in doubt after then. The closest Swanny got the margin to was 2 goals late in the last quarter but the Creek kicked the last 3 goals of the game mainly thanks to Damian Pedder and coach Grant Mooney.

The Creek managed to get on top of the Swans midfield and their backman played a superb game on Swannys main 2 forwards, Cantrill and Dougie Edwards (although Edwards came off in the 3rd quarter injured).

Omeo-Benambra also managed to win against Swan Reach in the juniors. It didn't look promising for the young Rangers as they trailed at 1/4 time with Swanny looking dangerous. Then the rain came and stopped the free-flowing style game that the Swans were playing and it turned into a scrappy game. Omeo got in front in the lst 10 minutes of the game and went onto win by 15 points.

Swifts Creek are now in the Grand Final while Swanny will have to play Bruthen this week in the Prelims.

In the juniors it will Swan Reach to take on Swifts Creek with the winner to play Omeo-Benambra in the Grand Final next week.

What's scary is the fact that Swanny choked once again! Unfortunately they talked the talk but couldn't walk the walk - where was Dougie? How many players are they going to pay big dollars next year to, in pursuit of that elusive flag?

And by the way, wasn't that guy playing for Buchan (pictured in this thread), Brad Clay? Didn't he win a Best & Fairest there in 2006 when they made the finals? Just an observation :)

Dougie injured his hammy the game before against Swifts Creek in the 3rd quarter. The only time he entered the defensive half of the ground all season he injures himself. Don't ask me what he was doing down there as his services aren't needed playing in the backline, they are needed anywhere within 80 metres of our goals.

It wasn't a happy camp down at Swan Reach I can assure you. Not one footy team made it into the Grand Final when both juniors and seniors both lost on the weekend. Both teams were top on the ladder heading into finals and both teams lost in straight sets.

And as for your reference to Brad Clay, you just might be accurate ;).

I hate to say it, but I was right.

2008's ODFL senior Best and Fairest was a tie between 2 players: Lindenow Souths Noel Jansz and Swifts Creeks Damian Tubb. Runner-up went to Swanny's co-captain Adam Rees.
