Why has he still not played a game in the seniors? Carlton has played Gibbs, Kangaroos with young Hansen and Geelong with Tom Hawkins? He has to play with the seniors at some stage, he was after all the 2nd round 1 draft pick(after Gibbs) yet he is still only playing at Bendigo. Hopefully we will see him in the main side in the next month, not this keep him fresh for 2008 rubbish.

Xavier Ellis was a top 5 a couple of years ago he's only just started playing, and he will be a top player too. Different player, different stages of development, different clubs. Gibbs is more ready made for AFL, Hansen is not and is a mile off playing top footy. But was in the starting side probably due to lack of depth. Hawkins is much bigger than Gumby at this stage, and I bet you he'll be back in the twos soon.

He'll get his chance soon enough

No room in the team for him. Why would we need any more KP forwards in the team? all it does is unbalance our team and with Hille coming back he wont be needed down back as Ryder can slot back down there. Let him develope for Bendigo and really earn his selecting unlike Gibbs, Hansen etc.

Exactly, why risk him if we don't have to. Give him a chance to develop; afterall hansen was only selected because kangas didn't really have a choice, and he didn't exactly have a flying start. Hawkins is bigger then gumby, but he did sweet all today. No need to rush gumby in, and crowd our foward line in the process.

The three guys you have mentioned are an example of why we shouldn't debut him yet. Gibbs is a midfielder, and so development, bodywise, isnt as important that that of a KPP. Hawkins is just huge. Gumby needs to get alot bigger before he can compete in marking contests. And lastly, Hansen was rushed into the team prematurely and was absolutely killed. We dont want that to happen to Gumby and have his confidence lowered.

He wasnt injured though. He chose to play school footy for the year, and the club agreed with the request because he was at the young end of the draft, so his body wasnt there yet. Gumby still needs another preseason IMO.

Geez got a bit of an unrealistic expectation of the kid. Anything you get out of him before he is 22 or 23 is just a bonus. Only have to look at winderlich to realise most kids take a while to develop.

ellis was injured - stress fractures in his foot early in the year, missed a couple of months of football through the middle of the season, and returned for a few games of VFL and school footy at the end. i've seen his last 3 matches, haven't been overly impressed. yes he's still new, but his endeavour and decision making need to improve at AFL level for him to be an effective contributor. i wouldn't mind sending him back to box hill for 3 weeks to work on some aspects of his game.

back to the main point, god it's irritating to read the crud written by people whose entire football knowledge/logic is based around drafting orders from various times in the past.

questions:
do you think that because gumbleton was a high first round choice, that it's panic stations that he's not in the seniors at the start of the first season?

do you think that recruiters could possibly be assessing the likely full-career value of potential draftees, and making decisions on what they think they'll be like from age 21-31?

do you think football administrators should have as much of an incredibly simplistic and short attention span as you, bigbopbope?

should sheedy select his side each week by choosing the 22 highest drafted uninjured players on the list, just to please you and your football-by-numbers mentality?

essendon fans have absolutely no need to be worried about gumbleton at this point in time. you currently have a functional forward setup in your seniors, and gumbleton has done nothing to suggest that he's not going to become a good player for you. you should be happy that you have strong competition for spots in the forward line - a pleasant change from 2006.

the november 2006 draft order ceased to be relevant in november 2006. after draft day, each club has the players it chose, and it has to work with them to develop them. some are surprise packets, some don't progress, but i think it's pretty unfair to forever judge players based on what a recruiter thought of them when they were 17.

You play them when they are ready. He will get games this year at some stage i would think but having seen him all through pre season and all his Bendigo games he isnt ready yet. Sundays VFL game proved it. He came up against a few bigger bodied blokes who had AFL experience and he struggled .
You need to think a bit more as your comparisons are pretty poor. Gibbs being a midfielder is completely different to a KPP. Hawkins is already 100kg , a lot bigger physically than Gumbleton. The last two weeks have shown that Hawkins is struggling with the challenge of being an 18 year KPP.
Hanson has played yes but did not do a lot anyway.
Gumbleton needs to play 10 or 12 games of VFL footy at least before being selected.

You would bloody hope not, that would leave Essendon without a certain J.Hird.

Yes, still finishing VCE last year so told Hawthorn he wasn't going to play until this year.

That was Beu Muston...

yep. we had 5 picks in the top 22 in 2005, and aside from grant birchall, they played a total of about 5 AFL games last year, and about 4 so far this year.
it's almost certain that at least 2 of the remaining 4 players will go on to cement long-term AFL careers, so we have a bit of bonus talent to come through that currently isn't showing up on our team sheet each week.
