I believe that they are Glenelg. Please correct me if I am wrong. I don't know how they got the nickname.

The Bays are indeed Glenelg, a beachside suburb of Adelaide, hence the reference to the bay. Also useful for poetic references such as the "Gay Bays", a particular favourite among Port supporters, but in widespread usage throughout SA football...;)

Glenelg is on Holdfast Bay, hence the nickname 'the Bays'.
The dictionary says:
Gle-nelg:
1. Landing site of first South Australian colonists, 1836. Seaside suburb of Adelaide.
2. Insignificant underachieving Australian Rules Football team, aka 'Tigers', 'Bays' or 'Gay Bays'.

Hmmm...Glenelg Football Club.
Well...four premierships, some Magarey Medallists...
Raised blokes like Chris McDermott, Tony McGuinness, Steve 'Sticks' Kernahan...
Hey...Uncle Steve, help me out here. Am I correct? Add some more for our curious Queenslander.
Oh...and they have beaten Southport a couple of times.

Can usually start the Premiership celebrations early when you are playing the Bays.. unless you're North Adelaide. Peter Marker used to be so obvious in his hatred towards Sturt when he used to present the replay, never forgave us for '74. :D
Did you know the 'Gay Bays' isn't just a dig to get a bite out of their fans? They really are. They admitted it in a former club song:
"We're dashing, we're gay, we're the pride of the Bay.."
'Gay pride' eh.
Sorry easty, it is a FACT.

Yes, it is a well known fact that many of SA's first 'gay beats' were located near the clubrooms.........henceforth the words in the song. After the council closed these 'beats' down, the committee decided that they should take that part out their song, seeing how the players now had to leave the local area for gratification.;)

Peter Marker! Another one for the "Thugs in the SANFL" thread. I remember his act of unbridled aggression towards David "Angel" Granger in our return to Alberton match in 1977. Fortunately his unprovoked attack on David was seen by the umpires and he received a well deserved one match suspension .... oh my, is there a smiley for "Can't keep a straight face any more"? :D

Didn't they also have a club song that went "He's fat, he's round, he bounces on the ground, he's Peter Carey, he's Peter Carey" ... or did I hear that from a cheer squad ... ?

because you are so backward and mentally challenged, may I tell you that gay means happy, until recent times when odd peoples disgusting acts have given it another meaning, and may I add that the glenelg song has not been that in the time that word had had 2 meanings anyway !

good natured banter ? He used the term gay as a defamatory remark ! Yet you do not have a go at him do you ????
As for my statement, that is just my opinion, everyone is entitled to one, its a democracy here in Australia. We arent like the old russia where you all have to agree with something !
He started it by using it as a put down remark to Glenelg, so he cant think too highly of it can he ?

Also they have given the Power a couple of handy players in Chad & Kane, bad luck Graham & adelaide. Also have obviously helped in the development of Josh Carr.
Oh and Chiggy, almost forgot chiggy!

By the way easty, that song was in use until the early 70's. 'Gay' as a double meaning started to be used in the 60's.

Anyone who is as fat as you make out would not be able to play what was an Australian record of games,
as for the port feral that brought that lame saying up, you cannot talk, take a look at the size of greg phillips ! lol

Obviously your Internet connection was interrupted because you didn't get to finish your sentence. Here let me do it for you ...
"... take a look at the size of Greg Phillips's trophy cabinet! He has twice as many premierships as the entire Glenelg Football Club."
Yes indeed, Greg Phillips a big man with a big appetite for Premierships!!!
And unlike Peter Carey not afraid to mix it with the big boys in the VFL and prove his dominance there too!!!

far from it easty, far from it. but some of us are busy preparing to watch our AFL side today, so time is scarce.
But I will say this, I've seen a lot of footy over a lot of years, and that includes seeing some of the very best Port sides fall to the Gay Bays at GB Oval. But the one thing that has remained constant - despite all the changes in the SANFL over the years, beating Port at a suburban ground in May is not cause for clearing a new space in that increasingly dusty trophy cabinet at Glenelg. That was lesson I thought even you might have remembered from 1999 (and that win was even later than May!!!).
And if u check the other thread you may even notice that I acknowledged Glenelg's performance and that they even deserved to win.

Geezus, dont the Port supporters get upset when even with the help of outside influences their team can't win?
Damn entertaining though.
BTW Easty, dont confuse them, they'd never know how to follow a team through thick and thin, hence the Power's fluctuating supporter base since they gained a reputaion for choking.
Hey Easty, wanna catch up for a beer this weekend?
