Kickett brings family tradition to family club
Stephen Rielly | May 2, 2007
THOMAS Kickett did more than sign a scholarship agreement with Hawthorn yesterday. He brought new life to a branch of the family tree.
The 15-year-old, a year 10 student from Broken Hill, is related to Dale and Derek Kickett, who graced AFL football in striking fashion over careers that, combined, involved seven clubs, 338 games and equal amounts of controversy and style.
Thomas' father, Mark, a talented footballer himself who was lost to the game in his late teens because he injured his neck seriously while playing for Claremont, is an uncle to both men, which, by Noongar tribal tradition, makes them cousins to Thomas.
As Mark watched his son formally start the three-year scholarship that will offer Thomas specialist coaching and training and opportunities to improve his game with the Hawks in Melbourne, while giving the club first option on him when he comes of draft age, he placed the occasion into a grander tradition.
Lance Franklin's grandmother, Mona, was a Kickett and is a cousin of Mark's, which, again by Noongar custom, makes little Thomas an uncle to big Buddy. Moreover, the origins of the Kickett line and the Noongar people are in the York district, east of Perth, which also happens to be Chance Bateman's country.
"It was very exciting for Thom to meet Buddy and for us to say that we have a family connection here makes Thom's involvement with Hawthorn all the more significant," Mark said.
"We're very proud of our family heritage and as Aboriginal people we take all of those relationships seriously. We've been blessed to have people like Derek and Dale and Larry Kickett, a great player for East Perth in the 1970s, in the mix. Graham Kickett, who played with East Fremantle in a premiership when he was only 18, has been an inspiration, too. We're so proud that Thom might follow the tradition."
And tradition matters to the Kicketts. For example, Thomas is known within the family by the name of Doodja, and is referred to as Thom outside the clan only.
His grandmother, Doolann-Leisha Eatts, explains that Doodja is a Noongar word to describe a deathly mist that can envelope the York Hill.
"If it had a mist over it, it was interpreted as a sign of something bad to follow. The mist itself is known as Doodja. If the hill had a Doodja on it, it was a bad sign and everyone would prepare themselves for terrible news. If it was clear, then it was interpreted to be a good sign," she says.
Doolann-Leisha's own name has tribal origins. It was her grandmother's name and translated, means "strong hands".
"Let's hope he has them," she chuckled.
Should keep an eye on this lad for the future.

Another Kickett set to make his mark

By Sarah Kalaja for Hawthorn Football Club
News
Hawthorn Football Club’s first NSW Scholarship Program position for 2007 has been accepted by a famous name in AFL circles – 15 year old Broken Hill player Thomas Kickett.
Kickett, who currently plays for his local club – West Broken Hill FC – is part of the NSW U/15 and U/16 development squads and will participate in the AFL U/16 National Championships in Queensland later this year.
General Manager Player Personnel and Strategy Chris Pelchen said the talented tall utility’s football development would be coordinated between his local club in Broken Hill, AFLNSW and the Hawthorn Football Club over the next three years.
"We are delighted to be able to offer Thomas Kickett a scholarship at Hawthorn Football Club and that Thomas has chosen the Hawks as his preferred destination despite attracting interest from numerous other AFL clubs,” Pelchen said.
“Hawthorn fully endorses the NSW Scholarship Program and sees this AFL initiative as a genuine opportunity for us to attract talented junior footballers to the Club, especially as our draft position may be compromised with improved on-field performance over the coming years.”
In describing Thomas Kickett, Pelchen added “He has both exciting skills and athleticism and should develop into a player of genuine ability in the foreseeable future. Thomas has the capacity to play as a goal-kicking forward and through the midfield – his outstanding agility a feature of his game.”
Kickett hails from famous football pedigree; his father Mark was an outstanding junior footballer in Western Australia before his career was ended by injury. He is a cousin to former AFL players Derek and Dale Kickett and his great aunt is also current Hawk Lance Franklin’s grandmother.
The AFL scholarship program is aimed at teenagers aged between 15–17 years. Under scholarship guidelines, AFL Clubs can recruit up to two teenagers from Greater Sydney and southern NSW in each year. Scholarships can range from 1-3 years duration with recipients receiving financial assistance towards their football and education.
Thomas will spend regular periods training with the Hawks in Melbourne from 2007 while under current AFL rules he will be eligible for both the 2009 and 2010 AFL National Drafts. Hawthorn will have the option of priority listing him to their primary player list at this time.

i know the boy and his family, and they are strong and very supportive of each other. i bet thats what influenced clarkson and harris to sign him. with 3 years of grooming, fingers crossed he will develop in2 a ready made made AFL player, his advantage is that he has a great head on his shoulders.
when he was introduced to the playing group, clarkson said get around and make yourself known to tom cos he'll be playing alongside yuz in a cuppla years......bit of confidence for the kid....... i can smell a hawks flag

2007 Qantas AFL KickStart Camp
News
FIFTY-one Indigenous footballers from around Australia have been selected to participate in the 2007 Qantas AFL KickStart Camp beginning in Melbourne on Monday, August 13.
Aged 14 and 15, the players have been chosen by state development officers in each state and the Northern Territory to attend the five-day camp.
AFL youth and high performance co-ordinator Jason McCartney (pictured with Darwin squad members Steven May, Chris Alchin and Anthony Hale) said the camp is designed to offer Indigenous youth a unique football and educational experience.
“The Qantas KickStart camp provides leadership, education and life skills that will last a lifetime,” he said.
“The five days will provide fantastic opportunities such as meeting Michael Long, Kevin Sheedy, Cathy Freeman and current Indigenous AFL players.
“For many this will be the first opportunity to visit Melbourne and see the AFL culture first hand.”
While in Melbourne the players will visit Windy Hill to watch Essendon train, and go to the round-20 match between Collingwood and Melbourne at the MCG.
Qantas group general manager marketing Neil Ross said the experience provided an important opportunity for young Australians from regional areas to connect with their sporting heroes.
“Qantas is committed to recognising and nurturing the sporting talents of young Australians,” he said.
“We hope the camp will encourage our budding sports stars to connect with their dreams and strive towards reaching their goals.”
The Qantas AFL KickStart program uses Australian Football as a vehicle to promote healthy lifestyles in Indigenous communities.
The program works with state governments to tailor messages for different regions and communities.
The program includes NAB AFL Auskick and involves children, teenagers, adults, coaches, administrators and women.

KickStart key to Indigenous growth: Sheedy
News
ESSENDON coach Kevin Sheedy believes programs such as the Qantas AFL KickStart Camp in Melbourne will further fast-track the development of Indigenous players into AFL ranks.
This week 51 young Indigenous footballers from across Australia, aged 14 and 15, are taking part in a three-day camp designed to offer players a unique football and educational experience.
Sheedy has been a big promoter of Indigenous players during his 27-season tenure at the Bombers, having played an integral role in bringing several Aboriginal players to the club in that time.
He said the atmosphere of an AFL club is so far removed from the environment some Indigenous players are accustomed to, new initiatives such as the KickStart camp will help them deal with the transition sooner.
“This sort of program [AFL Qantas KickStart] coming through is probably just happening a little bit earlier [than in the past],” Sheedy said.
“So we may be able to see their development just that little bit earlier than probably what we have.
“A lot of their boys [Indigenous] come on a little bit later, like somewhere between 20 to 23 years of age.
“You’d have to say that the Davey brothers, you know they’ve actually matured a little bit later – Alwyn and Aaron – and you’d have to say that, ‘Gee whiz, how fast are they? How good are they?’
“They may have been just playing footy in the under-16s and 17s and 18s but all of a sudden by the time they’re 23, they’re exciting and they’re brilliant, and they make people want to go to the footy.”
The youngsters involved in this week’s camp will get to play in a curtain-raiser on Friday night before the Collingwood-Melbourne clash at the MCG.
This camp aims to provide participants with leadership, education and life skills.
On Wednesday players had the privilege of listening to Indigenous sports stars Cathy Freeman, former Bombers stars Michael Long and Derek Kickett, as well as AFL Youth and High Performance Co-Ordinator Jason McCartney.
Freeman said she was thrilled the KickStart program was helping young Indigenous footballers strive to reach their goals.
“I’m really proud to be here because Qantas have this KickStart program happening and I’ve had the chance of meeting up with Longy [Michael Long] and some of the boys from all over Australia who aspire to be like Longy and Derek Kickett as well,” Freeman said.
“The main one [message] I think is just to make the most of the opportunities like today.
“If football’s the sport that makes them happy and it’s their calling in life then, you know, make the most of the opportunities, and be grateful.”
Long said there were 71 Indigenous players on AFL lists in season 2007 but hoped that number would increase to more than 100 in coming years.

I play in the local Broken Hill League squad down here and I constantly hear his named mentioned around town. I was playing in the interleague game Broken HIll Vs Millewa which was the game straight after his, so I didn't get a chance to see him play but I only here positive things about the kid. don't think he'll be playing to many league games just yet but if I get any info up here I'll let you know.

He has an older brother who used to play for the ACT Rams that had a fair bit of talent and created a bit of excitment around the place when he was only young. He had good skills and was used mostly pinch hitting in the forward lines, had great goal sense and created plenty of problems for us backmen when he was only 16-17. I think Marcus Kickett is his cousin he's about 19 and was second leading goal kicker for the league down here this year but he's more of a small forward that loves cleaing up the scraps after the big men have flown. Tom is been used mostly in the midfield by all accounts. Hope the young fella does alright for himself.
Another bloke down here just got picked up by the crows 17 year old Taylor Walker. Massive gun slash superstar kicked 7 goals on me in the semi final in the League game. Watch out for him next year he's the best I have seen for a long long time.

Steven May is one of the best talents coming out of the Territory in a few years. He is only 15 and debuted playing A Grade up here and snagged a few goals. He torches everyone in under 16's, and carves it up when he plays in the 18's. If he keeps improving he will be a good talent.
