once again the club shows its fresh thinking & modern approach to the game.....exposing new audiences, improving attendances & signing future members - thoughts?

PORT Adelaide president Greg Boulton wants to defy the convention that there are two distinct groups of AFL supporters these days - those who go to games and those who watch matches on television.
Boulton wants the Power to capture a new market of "hybrid" football fans - those who get so excited by AFL on television that they are moved to go to AAMI Stadium.
In an extraordinary partnership, Port has announced it will "embrace" Pay-TV network Foxtel, which is to telecast eight of the Power's 11 home games live on FoxSports this season, and probably more next year.
In return, Foxtel will hand to new subscribers Power season tickets for this season or, if they already have a ticket, one for next year (valued to $155) - for free.
Boulton and Foxtel boss Kim Williams consider the deal a win-win.
Port gets potentially more fans to AAMI Stadium, and their fans get the complete football package both in their lounge rooms and at AAMI Stadium.
Foxtel gets a better atmosphere to live telecasts from AAMI Stadium, and the Pay-TV network gets more subscribers.
And the AFL will have its new television policy of showing more live games against the gate, adopted from the U.S., put to the test. The American model suggests television sportsviewers are so moved by live telecasts that they ultimately go to matches to experience "the occasion".
The Port-Foxtel deal makes this more practical, says Power chief executive John James.
"The landscape has changed . . . and is changing," said James yesterday.
"Pay-TV through Foxtel, with four live telecasts every weekend, is now very much a part of how passionate football fans watch the game.
"Rather than resist this change, we're working with it along our philosophy of being innovative and pro-active.
"We will always encourage football fans to our games with the best packaging and marketing of our season tickets. Foxtel is giving them more of what they want - live telecasts, rather than delayed telecasts, of the AFL.
"We want more people at AAMI Stadium at Port Adelaide games because nothing beats the experience of watching a match live at the ground. And we want our fans showing their passion for the game in general by watching live football on Foxtel.
"It's a win for everyone."
Football fans have until June 30 to sign up with Foxtel for either of the next two years - with free installation and a free Power season ticket for this year and next.
The subscriber line is 1-300-732-583. The redemption code for the Power-Foxtel offer is "PFC".
The Advertiser's parent company, News Limited, is a partner in Foxtel.

This is a good initiative IMO. We're trying to boost attendances and hopefully those who get a free season ticket will attend a game or three and be so impressed that they'll buy a ticket next season.
Well it's a no lose scenario for Port. The games are going to be broadcast live against the gate regardless (thanks mr dimwitriou) so if we can try and turn it into a positive without it costing a thing - :thumbsu:

it certainly is a new initiative - & could be a masterstroke.
those that currently regularly go to games obviously enjoy doing so & will remain that way - i doubt any of these people will turn into foxtel junkies.
however, with fox exposing more pafc to armchair supporters, & the club dangling those tickets there to those that have not yet made the transition to being matchday stadium goers cant hurt :thumbsu:

IMO the risk this year is pretty much nil. Those who were going to buy season tickets will surely already have done so.
It's next year that the club will be keeping a close eye on season ticket sales and attendances.
The AFL have argued that live against the gate coverage on TV will actually boost attendances. This initiative is seeking to take advantage of whatever research went into arriving at that conclusion. It's argued that this is the case in the US. Will it translate to Australia?
Certainly worth a try.
As stated it is good for those that are port supporters and signing up to foxtel....... But as a foxtel subscriber myself since close to its inception and our houshold paying for 2 foxtel digital packages in the one house and getting expensive packages on each with most channels, feel somewhat jipped with freeloaders jumping on board.
Dont get me wrong the club is trying to get more supporters, but in ths case I somewhat feel I have wasted the effort buying a season ticket and people getting foxtel are getting rewarded for jumping on the bandwagon.:p

It should only be for this year imo, give them a sampler. Now you're giving it away before next year has even started for free.

shouldnt think like that mate & its not the case. youve done the right thing - supported the club from the outset. this is purely about getting people who dont currently go to end up being matchday stadium goers such as yourself.
those freeloaders - if the club has its way - will eventually pay up just like you do. :thumbsu:
all good?
Yeah I can certainly understand why the club is doing it. Finances are not a concern so Im happy to get foxtel and season tickets.
Im not convinced you will get many existing Port supporters at all sign up to foxtel to get the season tickets, but we'll see how it goes. Certainly the chance is there to attract new supporters.

Intresting innovation. I would be a bit pissed if I were already a subscriber to both.
What I am more interested in is to see the figures for next year. That is how many current members renew through the Foxtel deal?
Also what would the club prefer 35000 members of which say 30000 paid or 33000 members from which they all paid?

If Foxtel is paying for the season ticket, even if it is at a reduced rate, who really cares.
The money is still going back to Port.

thats because you're a bum.
Good on Port and Foxtel for organizing this, even though we already have both so will not see any benefit. Perhaps when I move out I can use this to cut expenses :P
Shows the massive profit margin that Foxtel are making from existing subscribers though. In a lot of cases that $155 is about one a half month's worth of subscription.

Hell. I have the complete package with Foxtel IQ and I only pay $110.00 a month.. Dont know who would be paying over that for Foxtel.

errrr read again Shazzza.
He said $155 is about one a half month's worth of subscription.
110+(110/2)= $165.
I reckon you did the same as me when I read it first and read it as half a month.
Yeah, sorry that should read one and a half month's. But one and a half, two or three months... what's the difference. It doesn't change the point that Foxtel is making a packet.
Seems pretty pointless.
The issue will still be that our crowds are hamstrung by reserved seating.

Yes, I am pretty hot on this issue ATM. I have no problem with people who fork out the big money on the wing to have a reserved seat, but behind both ends should be unreserved seating.
I love my seats, back row, extra room etc, but I think the budget and standard seating should just get you in, not a reserved seat.
Match day tickets do away with budget $18.50 and standard $25.50 and replace them with one, for $20 or $21.00.
Also like Adelaide United, if you pre buy a ticket it is the same or cheaper than at the gate. This will solve the problem of ques at the ground.
Almost worth its own thread.

Do you also get annoyed when you've got a full tank of petrol and the price drops??
I already have both, probably always will. If it gets a few more people to games great, i cant see it having any grand effect. No lose situation as people have previously explained.

hmm this offer is quite tempting to me, the wife has been talking about getting foxtel and living in Mannum (plus a home full of cows supporters except for my 1 year old daughter) i haven't bothered to get a season ticket mainly due to distance. This offer could be a win win situation for me, the savings on the ticket will cover the fuel costs for at least 6 matches so is quite beneficial. Also if i can try and get my 3 year old son obsessed with port instead of thomas the tank engine i might continue the membership. the wife looks after children during the day so foxtel would be a godsend for her and tax deductable :thumbsu:

haha, i have brand newies just waiting for the right time, i'm thinking the next showdown when port hopefully beat the cows.
If you read the terms and conditions you can either get a seasons ticket OR a power membership.
This begs the question, if you are a port supporter living in Sydney or Melbourne and buy Foxtel, can you get the PAFC membership?

Sorry my friend, but you are in the country as I am, and the offer is only for the metropolitan area!
Country people miss out again:mad:
Mind you, I would have to do a massive amount of sweet-talking to get the missus to agree.
