Port Melbourne 7.4.46 v Bullants 3.3.21 at half time.
Jake Edwards on crutches with a foot injury. It is all unravelling at the moment.

Bower was good, but rarely plays on an opponent so might be exposed at AFL level. Only one who looked even a remote chance to be promoted. Flint was solid but not spectacular.

Exactly.
Bower played on the wing today, and did some nice things. Could earn a senior call up in the next couple of weeks. Hartlett was quiet again, and really needs to find some form.

Iaccobuchi (sp?) who was delisted from Collingwood at the end of '06 was solid, although he's not a Carlton listed player.

Edwards was on crutches after the game, and I thought I heard him say that he had a fractured leg.

FWIW, Gibbs, Grigg and Benjamin were sitting 2 rows in front of us all day. :thumbsu:

Of all the things i read about onfield contributions, it's things like this that make me happiest. Support for each other, and it's the young kids, hanging out and sticking together. Can only be a good thing for our future.

How was benjamin looking? in pain or pain-free? And grigg? And did Gilly smile at Gibbs everytime he walked past?

Benjamin is very quiet, and really wasn't talking as much as Grigg and Gibbs. Grigg certainly didn't have anything supporting his arm, which hopefully is a good sign for an early return.

Gilly was pretty excited that Gibbsy was sitting in front of us, and he certainly couldn't wipe the smile off his face. :D

That's great news about Grigg. I saw pics of him training last week, and he had both arms free as he was kicking balls around.

He'll come back, play one or two for the Ants, and then debut :)

Will also depend of his match fitness as well AWG.
Give him a month with the Ants, and then see how he is going. It would be a huge mistake to play him before he is right to go.

yeah i know :)

Although if injuries keep going the way they are, he may be called up sooner than expected, which i hope is not the case, because as you say, we do not want to make the mistake of playing him before he's right.

If we do continue to get injuries, then I would much rather play one of the senior players (Saddington or Bannister) before playing one of these younger kids before they are ready.

Was there and agree with this. Hartlett definitely didn't stand out.

Bannister got quite a bit of the ball. He was playing in the middle for most of the game. They really missed Blackwell and Young today in the middle.

Watched quite a bit of saddington b/c of Thornton injury. He really does marshall the troops back there and only made one bad handball and conceded a goal in junk time. The rest of the time he held his man, helped out others and generally bossed around all the young ones in the back line. His kicking skills are very good out of defence. Obviously, I'd prefer Thornton in but I think he will be able to do a job at AFL level, as he has already proven in the past.

Bower was good but is being played on the wing...and he looks pretty good there too. Given where he's been playing and his still skinny body I don't think he can be expected to play on Thornton's man (i.e 3rd tall...unless they are skinny themselves). Banno is the only other guy with the strength and experience but I would be reluctant to bring him in, especially over Saddington.

HBF
6 May 2007, 19:23
Fair summary that av76.
Bower would be the obvious choice to bring in, but there is no way that I would play him in the back half. Would play him on the wing, and let him use his height and pace to advantage.

My money is on Jamison, or possibly Jacobs to cover for our rucks? even though he is injured at the moment.

Aisake perhaps?

If you want to play exciting but unaccountable footy, Bower is the go. I think if you want to write this season off as development...sure.

But I really think we need a strong body who can do a shutdown job to replace thornton.
Next week
Rocca-Setanta - not too confident about this given recent form agaist other big guys
Waite-Cloke - Waite had an awesome game last week but was terrible before that.

If we play Bower, that leaves Cloke and Bower taking 1 of each Bryan/Fraser/Maxwell. Playing Cloke back is a loss and its still leaves a potential mismatch in size and strength for Bower. At least if we have Saddo or Bannister (whipping boy around here) it won't be so easy to exploit a mismatch.

Gave off a couple of good handballs from what I saw in the 2nd half but apart from that not much else. Doesnt seem to run hard enough, looks slow, unfit and got brushed aside way too easily today.

A similar situation occured in 2004. On that occasion Kouta came in for his first game of the season and ended up beating Rocca hands down. If Kouta is fit he should definatly play on Rocca.

That would be a total disaster. I hope the coaches box isn't tempted by this idea.

No, Jake is now playing with the Ants.
Did some nice things today, and could had around 15-20 touches. Can see that he has some of his fathers skill, but just think that he might just be too small and lacks that leg speed of the modern game.

Care to explain why it would be a "total disaster"? If it worked in Round 7 2004 with Kouta keeping him goaless then why wouldn't it work now? During the 2004 wizard cup match Vs Sydney at Telstra Stadium Kouta tore his hamstring that would keep him of the training track for the following nine weeks. Like now with the finger injury, his match fitness is not up to scratch for playing in the midfield for four quarters. If we are really struggling to get the ball out of the centre then a change during the game can always be made. Kouta has the strength that makes him a very good matchup for Rocca and Kouta would not be exposed for his lack of athleticism nowadays by playing on Rocca. If you think that O'hailpin is a good match up with Rocca then that is fine and you should have just said so. Personally I think that Setanta should play on whoever Collingwoods resting ruckman is, with Waite going to Travis Cloke. I am assuming the worst case scenario and Bret Thornton does not play.

AlecDuncan

Just because you get away with something once, doesn't mean you should try it again. We were bloody lucky then and Kouta is three years older now. He will never be a key position player again. You're right about Setanta - he should pick up either Cloke or Bryan.

Whitnall starred on Rocca the first time round in 2006, but go slaughtered the second time around so that idea doesn't thrill me either. Waite? Maybe, but Rocca's taller and stronger than Reiwoldt and I don't like that idea much either.

I hope like hell that Thornton comes up.

The real question is: how do we beat the flood? I don't want to see our kinder-midfield exhaust itself bombing clearances to spare opposition defenders ever again. So how do we setup our forward line? Leave Fev out on a flank? Put Red in the square? Hartlett on the opposite flank? We need a plan B for when the flood inevitably happens.

Was there on Sunday aswell. Agree with most been said.. real dissapointed to see Edwards go down - apparently the year. Mclaren 8-10.

For those there, how good were some of those punches landed by number 44 in the twos.. he nearly killed two people. Lucky he didnt get charged by the cops who were standing not too far away!
