Aflter having a chuckle at Terry Wallace and the 2011 saga our chairman opens his big trap up and says we are not good enough. :thumbsd:
That's not something we want to hear. Even if we aren't good enough you do not say those things publicly :thumbsd:
How do the players feel hearing their chairman say they are not good enough.
Further evidence of us become a bottom 4 side all round :thumbsd:

Bomber chief backs coach, but team's no good for flag
Stathi Paxinos | May 6, 2007
ESSENDON chairman Ray Horsburgh yesterday declared the Bombers were not good enough to win this year's flag and would not finish higher than seventh, but backed coach Kevin Sheedy in developing the list of young players.
With Sheedy's contract up for renewal, Horsburgh said the focus for the club was player development. Talking on SEN, Horsburgh would not be drawn on whether Sheedy would be reappointed, but agreed that as things now stood, the performance of the veteran coach had to be seen in a positive light.
"It's not about how many games we win. We can't win the flag this year, so it's about how we develop our list," Horsburgh said.
"I think he's done a very good job in the recruiting this year. We've got kids there like Paddy Ryder and the pace of the young indigenous players we've recruited. (Brent) Stanton's improving and we've just got to keep developing these kids. (Jason) Laycock's got to get games.
"In my view and what we've discussed at the board, it matters about the development of the list. It takes a long time to win a flag. We were hanging around fifth and sixth for a number of years. It's all right to tell your fans you're playing in finals, but until you get experience in the finals with the young kids playing building towards a flag, playing in the finals mean nothing."
When asked why the Dons could not win the flag, he said: "Because I don't think we're good enough … I think we might be around eighth, ninth, seventh at best."
He said Sheedy would probably remain involved at the club after his coaching days were over. "He's an icon. He comes out this week and says things and probably another 10,000 people come to the game."
He also said Essendon would not be interested in having a player like West Coast's Ben Cousins. "My personal view is we wouldn't take him and, if we had someone like that, we'd probably let him go," he said.

I disagree and for mine it's finally good to hear some honest and non propganda crap coming out of Essendon.
Those that are realistic enough know it, those in the football world also know it, we are not good enough.
It's about time the whole club woke up to themselves and realised we have a long way to go.
Hopefuly then we can move forward and stop talking about finals and top 4 etc and talk about improving in all aspects .

Its good to know that the board acknowledges this year as a rebuilding year. Hopefully it means that sheed's wont be sacked.

I agree 7th at best means probaby 13 wins which would mean winning 10 out of the last 16 so at least he is being realistic.

So even though the players think we'll play finals - Mcveigh mentioned it on the radio, Hird, Lloyd and Mal have also said that... the chairman knows better?
He should stick to running the financial side and club instead of opening his trap on footy matters.
You never want to hear your powers at be say "you are not good enough" in public.
I don't want the club to develop a rebuilding culture. Before you know it we'll be rebuilding for 20 years and be in the same boat as Richmond.

Maybe the chairman is able to present a more realistic version of events. After all, his comment was that we won't win the flag this year and surely even the most optimistic and one eyed supporters can't argue with that.
Like it or not, we are rebuilding (and if we're not then we're in trouble because the current team isn't flag material and we will lose Hird at the end of the year plus a few others like MJ & JJ can't last much longer) and I have no problem with the chairman saying so.

You guys have all been fooled by the new spin doctors of the AFL.. the Wallaces, the Pagans, the Saints, the Hawks and their rebuilding schemes.
What have they achieved? Have any of them won a premiership?
The reason people like the term rebuilding is because it makes losses easier to take and acceptable. :thumbsd:
As long as there is run in the legs of Hird, Lloyd and the others I can gurantee you they will be trying to win the flag every year they play.
If any sportsman out there starts they year thinking they cannot win anything they will never win anything.

I have not been fooled by anyone.
I make my own decisions based on what i see and i try to be as realistic as possible.
Tell me something kelvin
If we are not rebuilding, after finishing 12th (i think) and 15th in the last 2 years, then what are we doing?

I think that its pretty ordinary that it comes out after round six. If it was to come out at round 13 or 14 then you can understand, but we are only 6 weeks into the season and anything can happen.
Yeah fair enough its about developing our younger players but you can do that whilst being succesful, we had a younger team out when we beat Adelaide in Adelaide, so therefore we arn't that far away, certainly not far away enough to be quite negative
So even though the players think we'll play finals - Mcveigh mentioned it on the radio, Hird, Lloyd and Mal have also said that... the chairman knows better?
He obviously hasn't taken as many hits to the head as Hird, Lloyd or Mal.
I'm abit sick of the sugar coating PR rubbish that has been leaking out of the club for years on end.
He should stick to running the financial side and club instead of opening his trap on footy matters.
Therein lies another problem. We pay our players the most out of any victorian team. After the last three years of crap, half of them don't deserve more than a packet of crisps and a can of coke after each game.
Ill be the first to admit I was caught up in the great start we had to the season. I even created a thread for us to reassess our predictions. Regardless, I thought it was refreshing to hear RH give our side an honest assessment of where we are at in relation to the rest of the competition. 'Dreaming' is an accurate term if any of us ever thought we could match it with WCE and Sydney at this stage.
Maybe the players can use it as a bit of a spur on. Maybe it was a bit of a planed dig to fire them up ;)
Well, I sincerely it does burn them, as we're looking at going from 4 very winnable games 2 weeks ago to 3-5. We're not too far off bottom 4 over a 1/4 of the season in.

Lets be honest here.. we could be 4 - 2 or even 5 - 1 with a bit of luck.
You don't get 48 points up against the blues and lose a game with flooding tactics these days. Thats a game we lost as a direct result of the coaching staff.
Now if we make the 8 and play a Sydney and a Barry Hall goes down or has no impact I'll back us in any day of the week. I'd even back us in with Hall in Melbourne - just look at North last week or us last year.
The comp is so close now that any team that can get a good run on can do some damage.
We still have a good group of senior players like Port and Brisbane. We have brought in some youngsters to fill the holes like they have. We are one game behind both and the Pies yet they are on the right track and we need to rebuild?
I still like to have hope that Lloyd, Lucas, Fletch, Mal, Hird, JJ and the like can play great football.... in finals. There's some youngsters coming on - Davey, Winderlich, Stanton, Ryder and a we have a really good crop of draftees.
A winning culture and organisation does not use rebuilding as an excuse and does not put up the white flag this early in the season.
All it does is allows complacency to creep into the team.

I give us no hope without Lloyd, Im afraid to say. Would love to be proven otherwise.....

Even against Richmond?
Even against Richmond?
It would be a close game, even though it shouldnt be. We just dont seem to be able to cover Lloyd sufficiently to sustain scoreboard pressure over 4 qtrs.

My beef was that Horsborough essentially said Sheedy didn't have to do too much to get his contract renewed. Bullschite if you ask me.
2 crap years and we will be accepting of 3. No way - look at WC - did they re-build yes - did they re-build and tell the world - NO. They got on with the job and improved by getting in new blood.
sheedy has to earn his spot - and I reckon top 8 is a requirement else we are going nowhere.
The problem is - he is playing older guys hoping to get him over the line.
So should he play our best team, try and get into the 8 and save his job or play kids to 're-build' and lose his job? Catch-22 for the poor old bugger.

somewhere inbetween - to make the 8 I think he needs to play the younger players who will give the team more enthusiasm and excitement.
Guys playing for their footy careers do not help you win many games.

You're right to an extent, some guys playing for their career's can lift, like Pev has done, some guys may just not have it anymore, like MJ or Heff, but there is a bit of a line between dropping them and seeing if they can re-gain it.
Players like MJ and Heff do need to lift and the coaching staff do need to do a better job of lifting some players and getting more out of them, but it's also up to the players as well to be motivated and work harder.

Agreed - but it is also up to the coaching staff to drop players under-performing. Sheedy far too often talks big and acts little.
every year it seems we hear that spots will have to earned. I am again seeing him break that promise.
People speak of a complacency culture creeping in - well i reckon thats the first place you look to cut it out.

Someone should tell him to say no comment to everything.
Please, I've had enough of this baffoon.
He lied to the cameras when Sheeds was gone, he said we'll only look at appointing someone with a history of success,, leaking the Peverill and JJ delistings, etc, etc
It's been 3 years since this clown got his head on TV and we've been bottom 4 in everything we've done since.
