View Full Version : Midfielders
Our need for tall, fast midielders is well documented.
Who are the likely lads in next years draft??

Shhh. Might be time to give him a stint in the GNFL. ;)

Ok, assuming this, who gets traded or should we just tank it? ;)
Trent Cotchin would be up there as well, but at 184cm, he's not exactly tall. Depending on who finishes bottom and what they will for (ruckman, mid, etc, etc), I would still say he'd be in the top 3.

According to some, Masten's disposal is questionable, but he gets plenty of the ball as South Frem can atest to in the first derby of the year.
We need more ball magnets but at 180cm and not overly quick we have a plethora of stubby legged, slow, midgets playing in the guts already.
We need either super quick, tall midfielders or super quick tall midfielders!!!.
But I guess there aren't too many of those going around.
Chris Masten is 182cm http://www.footygoss.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=27560&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0 - to keep it in perspective Hasleby and Daniel Wells are 181cm, Riccuito 183cm. Watching him a couple of times in the WAFL I don't think his disposal is anything to get worried about, and he seems quicker then 90% of all the other players around him; Reminds me of Farren Ray's speed when he was in the WAFL, and I think he is regarded as being pretty fast.
Then main point is that gets a heck of a lot of the ball, and often is seen breaking away from packs - something Freo need desperately. In summary, seems a "true" footballer with some reasonable athletic traits (IE decent speed and height). Don't know enough about other draftees to know where he will go, but I expect he will go Top 5.
As for tall midfielders, Trent Cotchin (184cm is big enough for a midfielder) and Cale Morton (around 190) are probably more that type....
But what would you rather have, a footballer who isn't outstanding athletic-wise but who has real footy brains and get plenty of the ball (Say Marc Murphy at 179cm, reasonably fast and a real footballer racking up 20+ possessions a game), or an outstanding athlete who is dangerous when he gets the ball but otherwise is quiet (Say Deledio 189cm can run as fast as Judd and good skills but doesn't get the ball as much)?
Masten isnt what Freo need. He is too similar to Carr, Hasleby, Bell etc.
Cotchin is quick, nice size and very highly regarded. Gets around 2.93 for 20m, so he's quick.
Morton isnt a midfielder at this stage. Plays an onball (ruck) role all over the ground but dont bank on him being a clearance 100min a game onballer.
Cotchin is the go for Freo. But he wont get to their pick IMO.

I like Pendlebury but Im not sure he is what you need. He does have good hands, nice height and is classy but he isnt quick. I dont recall him burning off anyone from a standing start.
Freo need someone who can get the footy at a clearance, bolt 20m towards goal and then pump it 55m. Pendlebury wins the ball well in congestion, pivots (result of his basketball background) and feeds it out.
The reality is that Freo needs a quick, tall, goal kicking clearance player. Unfortunatley there is only one of them in the league, his name is Chris Judd.
Given how hard it is to find that type, if I was a Freo recruiter I would be looking for 2 things in a midfielder; (1) pace and willingness to use it and (2) clearance ability. I wouldnt care if he was 180cm tbh.
Most importantly Freo need to actually draft a midfielder or 2. I mean a pure midfielder, no more of these "HBF as a junior hopefully we can turn him into a midfielder" types. Normally there is a reason why these elite juniors never progressed into the middle of the ground despite being a dominant player.

I agree with almost everything you said, with the additional comments:
(1) Theres are a few more tall fast clearance players than Chris Judd. Luke Ball and Lenny Hayes also spring to mind. Pendlebury is not quick, but he has great agility and is very quick with his hands. He gets the ball too and his disposal is first rate.
(2) Clearance ability is slightly more important than pace.
(3) Reasonable endurance is also a factor, and they have to be at least 180cm.
I think as you say, a "midfielder" midfielder is important first and foremost. I wouldn't mind though if with a had a second high pick we had a go at some of the athletic utilities like David Myers, Rhys Palmer or Cale Morton.

Sorry, I was going off memory.
He was recorded as getting 2.96 for the 20m last year.
Suprisingly, that is about the same as what Aaron Davey got. Who got 2.97 afew yrs back at a state screening.
Just goes to show the irrelevance of a time sprint time on a basketball court because Davey would out run 95% of players on a footy field.
