Pies lure promising Perry
Nick Hulett for Collingwood Football Club
News
Collingwood is pleased to announce the signing of its third New South Wales AFL Scholarship recipient.
Highly sought after 14-year-old Nick Perry, who hails from the Penrith Swans Football Club in the western suburbs of Sydney, joins promising youngsters Scott Reed and Tom Young as Collingwood scholarship holders.
Under the scheme introduced by the AFL in 2005, which is aimed at giving the best young athletes in NSW a clear pathway to AFL football, each AFL club is able to sign two NSW youngsters per year, with first option of selecting those players with the club’s final pick in the draft in the year the player is eligible.
In 2006 Collingwood signed Central Coast and AIS Academy prospect Scott Reed, and recently added Bowral native Thomas Young to its list of potential future Magpies.
Perry, meanwhile, is a 190-centimetre talent with tremendous athletic capabilities, lured to AFL football when he was 10 by a couple of mates, having played state representative baseball for many years.
Perry was spotted by Collingwood playing local representative football, something he has done for each of the five years he has played Australian rules. As with Thomas Young, Perry is another product of Collingwood’s New South Wales Talent Academy managed by former Sydney Swan veteran Rod Carter.
Perry has recorded a remarkable beep-test result of 14.8, at last month’s state trials at Saint Ignatius College in Sydney and placed in the top five per cent for each discipline tested.
Perry’s father John spoke to collingwoodfc.com.au shortly after the announcement.
“The family is elated. It’s hard to put into words how exciting it is.
“Nick chose Collingwood because of the professionalism the club has shown. There was no lip service, all the talk was followed up by actions, which impressed us immensely. Collingwood were able to outline a clear and decisive development plan that will develop Nick’s potential to the maximum.
"We couldn’t be happier or more impressed with Collingwood.”
Collingwood’s National Recruiting Manager Derek Hine spoke of the club’s excitement.
“We are delighted that Nick has chosen the Collingwood Football Club as with Scott Reed and Thomas Young we see Nick with all the necessary physical attributes to play at the elite level," Hine told collingwoodfc.com.au.
“Nick does not turn 15 until June and he already stands at 190 centimetres. We see Nick potentially developing into a key position prospect with all the physical scope of a midfielder. Nick has been closely monitored by Collingwood for the past two years and has continued his rapid development via our New South Wales Talent Academy under the tutelage of Rod Carter.
“As with Scott Reed and Thomas Young, Nick has displayed an insatiable desire to work on his game which is a testament to rapid his development.
“Collingwood could not be more delighted with our three scholarship holders who we feel all have the necessary attributes to play at the highest level. We look forward to all the boys working with Alan Richardson and Brad Scott as members of our Collingwood Development Academy.”
Perry will this year play for the Penrith Swans Under 16 side, and also the Penrith Rams Under 18 team where possible, to further his development.
Great work by all involved and best wishes to Nick.:thumbsu:
Who knows if these kids will make it or if we have chosen well but it is encouraging that we are tapping a source and our money is being spent on enhancing the odds that we can build a quality list.

Does anyone else find it amazing that the kid's 14 and has been "closely monitored" for 2 years?

Not at all . When people stand out in all sports from a young age people are generally keeping an eye on them . Even playing under 13s there was always one or two guys who people where suggesting at that age that they will play afl. It does not however mean they will amount to anything.
The problem with 11,12,13,14 yos and even older is that there bodies can change very quickly which can completely stuff them up and some who start very slowly who you would not think are no chance end up turning out to be guns. While this is a great initiative we still need to remember it is a long shot. Its hard enough predicting futures when they are 17 let alone 14. If we get 1 good player out of 3 it will be a very good result.

You're right, it's even more of a lottery than the normal draft but it can work out. Look at Melbourne Storm, they picked up Greg Inglis and isreal whateverhislastnameis at about 14 and they're both looking like absolute guns.
That's 3 w've now got so as long as they don't get ahead of themselves and think they've already made it, could be exciting times ahead.:thumbsu:
BTW, common theme in the last 2 is that a number of clubs were after them but they picked us because of our professionalism. That's gotta be a good thing.

About time they started using this cash and clout everyone talks about. I'd find it amazing that we weren't doing it 5 years ago. Watch the less professional clubs start the usual whineing about this when some of these players get exposure at the highest level. Imagine the difference between a gifted youngster who has had 4 years exposed to people like Burns, Didak, Buckley and Mick Malthouse, as oppossed to someone who is good but has not had that polish when they reach the AFL?:)
190cm 14 year old..
WTF are these kids eating?

there was no scolarship program 5 years ago.
And there would be no point aiding the development of an early-teen only to have them snapped up in the draft by someone else.

Wow, another one. I feel guilty in a way. But it's all within the rules and we have to spend our never ending cheque book some how.

So your telling me that clubs have only just started identifying young talent when this scholarship program started? I wasn't talking about the actual scholarship program, I'm aware it only started last year, but about using smarts to look at good young players and see where they fit at the club. Haven't been the greatest in the world at really identifying classs young players outside top 5 draft until quite recently, and even that may only be luck. In fact you could probably argue we have done better out of trades than getting more than one good player a year out of the draft.

yeah but why would u watch a player for 5 years if every other club is gonna start noticing him 12 months before the draft and probably pick him up before we do?

You are right there. Thats what was/is crap about the draft and possibly why they bought this in.

well done to the kid
I remember a mate telling me about Christiano Ronaldo (Elite soccer star now) being bought for $50,000 by a club at the age of 13 or something. It seems as if football is becoming much the same now maybe not to that extent but slowly the kids being developed are getting much younger.
I personally think that Collingwood are doing an excellent job here by trying to develop a kid with heaps of talent at such a young age. He might not make it but a lot of young kids bred under 1 club can only benefit being in a massive football club like C'Wood and learning under the stars themselves.
Good luck to the kid. :thumbsu:
Thought this might be of interest from the weekend. It is from the Sydney AFL U/18 competition (Second Division), so it is not a world beating standard of football, but this is balanced by the fact that he is a 14 year old I guess.

I am impressed. Thanks for that!
This program should speed up the development of these kids so that they are as AFL ready as they could be as soon as they get drafted. There will be some very good 18 year olds running around in a few years time, and Nick is no exception as well as Scott (Reid) and Thomas (Young).

Now, I know I might be slightly biased having known Nick Perry for the past 5 years , but the past 5 years have included his beginnings in AFL to where he is today, and his signing with the Collingwood football club. I've never seen someone in all my years involved in many sports as dedicated and determined as Nick to better his own best, to improve in all aspects of his game , working not just on his strengths but working bloody hard on his weaknesses. Just thinking back to his beep test this time last year of 11.8 and seeing it at 14.8 now is just amazing. At 14, he possesses a maturity I've yet to see in anyone else his age and above all else he's an all round good kid. I also want to commend Collingwood on their professionalism, and the opportunity that the scholarship will offer Nick.:thumbsu:
So good luck to Nick and his impending scholarship!!!:thumbsu:

No. it is an imposter.
This was on the front page of our local paper, so I thought I'd post a link. Bear in mind that the guy who wrote it referred to umpires as "referees" recently in a match report so it's not real flash. That's what we're dealing with

"As a condition of the scholarship he will be expected to maintain a highly regimented training schedule dictated by Collingwood. `I'll travel to see them four times a year and they'll come here as well. They've given me a training program I have to do at home which is very full on,'' he said."
The kid's 14!!! Hope we don't see burn out at 19!!!

Not much detail available on his most recent U16s game (under Sydney South West) but they lost.
Thought you might appreciate an update. Nick made his senior debut on Saturday against the undefeated League leaders and handled himself well by all accounts. This is the Sydney AFL First Division so it is the competition below the State League.
