View Full Version : Insecure Geelong supporters
It's two completely different worlds on BigFooty. Theres the West Coast board and the Geelong board, and both seem about as dilusional as each other.
Just then I went into the Geelong forum into a topic about their next 5 weeks. It has about 15 or so Geelong supporters posting their predictions of wins against west coast, sydney, brisbane and port (not of all of them tipped like this but similar). I wrote that they may be getting ahead of themselves and that they have beaten three extremely average teams in Carlton, Richmond and Melbourne. Suddenly I'm attacked from every corner by insecure Geelong supporters with comments like 'this is our board we can do what we want.'
It's probably the same in the West Coast board, you can't ask me because I'm an eagles supporter but i bet any Geelong supporter will back my point up.
What's the point of this thread you ask?
Geelong supporters know they can't win it, Carlton, Melbourne and Richmond are many divisions below the Eagles!

When were hot were hot (beat any side)
When were cold we are icy cold (lose to anyside)

I love comments like this. Every supporter says it about their team.
The fact is even if you're hot, we have to be below par for you to beat us.

even thought we lost last year at SS to you, we were hot for 3 qtrs and were up by 9 goals. went cold and stopped playing in the forth and lost.. go figure..
if were hot we can beat WCE, if were not we will get flogged (only as SS at S we got no chance)

I have always felt that our midefeild will beat yours..at skilled the ground oiis long and running power counts. Last year it was quite windy and you played a good 2 1/2 qtr...wce wewre on a mission that day
I think it will be close. Whoever wins in the middle will win it

Not exactly true.
Richmond cold = lose to a middle-of-the-road team by 157 points
Richmond hot = still lose, but to the top team by only 20-something points

you'd have to be stupid to realise when we are on song we win 98% of the time. The reason it's not 100% is because our best ranks behind only the Eagles IMO.
We just produce it so rarely.
and who said "we know we can't win," the punters have us favourites, so some people either enjoy throwing away their money, or they do think we can win.

Disagree. Last year will be their motivation for this week, and if we have any sort of lead at 1/2 time, I think we will hold it to 'prove a point.' We were up by 9 goals last year when you were the best team in the land... there is no reason why we cannot do it again.

We are 6-0, said to be the most arrogant team around, yet even we wouldn't come out with crap like that if the only teams we had beaten were the bottom three sides of the comp!
We just produce it so rarely. Inconsistency is not the mark of a good side. Any team can win, doing it consistently is what sets you apart from the rest.

Anyone from either side that says their club will win easily should bet every dollar they have on it.
Otherwise they should shut the hell up.

Which was?
That Geelong are a highly talented but extremely inconsistent side, who on a good day could push us, if not beat us, at Skilled.

That Geelong are a highly talented but extremely inconsistent side, who on a good day could push us, if not beat us, at Skilled.I dont disagree with any of that, in fact I have tipped Geelong. (The comp is that even you could say that about any side against any opposition almost.)
The thing that makes me hope we smash them however, is the arrogance coming from 99% of their supporters who think its a lay down mazare that they will beat us! I would have thought it was a 50/50 game, go to the Geelong board and you would think it is a forgone conclusion.
I dont think I missed the point of the original post at all. There are plenty of highly talented teams in the comp that cant put it together consistantly, Geelong aren't special in that reguard. The fact that people are willing to bet money on the outcome of a football game proves nothing.

BS he did. I think you did.
He said you'd have to be stupid not to realise that Geelong win this game 98% of the time if they play well.
Which is total garbage.
I totally agree that this game is a 50/50 shot, But i can also understand why cats fans are optimistic. Just look at west coasts record at skilled, west coast are definetly a superior team but dont seem to bring their A grade game in front of the geelong crowd

Seriously, how did you miss that?Probably because you have lost games to the Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and the Kangaroos already this seaon.
This "if we are on song we can beat anyone" argument is weak. If this is the case why are your players turning up to 50% of your matches this year not "switched on"? As a supporter shouldn't you be asking this question, or do you just hope and pray they are "on" each week?

if were hot we can beat WCE, if were not we will get flogged (only as SS at S we got no chance)yes but if the eagles are hot as well i have no doubt that we would win, your team can not just beat any team when they are hot because you need to be hot against the good teams and they cant seem to manage to do that.

damn ****ing right I'm asking that question, you don't need to tell Geelong fans this because it pisses us off alot that in some matches we just don't seem to give a shit about the result.
If you would actually observe other teams besides West Coast you'd know I'm right, weak argument or not, when talking about Geelong, a vast majority of fans agree witht his assesment.

I agree. But I would qualify it a little. It's been interesting that two of the teams that beat Geelong have gone on to look a lot stronger than people initially expected. Both North and the Hawks have looked good since. Perhaps the losses Geelong has incurred were over better sides than people might think, which make sit interesting because the Hawks were a little lucky. For my money, Geelong is among the most average side in the competition, with the potential to be a real contender.
The problem Geelong has is that they are schizto. You never know which team will run on the field. If the Cats play to their full potential, the Eagles will get hammered. If they don't, the Eagles will notch up another lackluster win to add to their string of somewhat pedestrian games.
I don't think the Cats have the forward line to beat the Eagles- not this year. In a year or two, look out. Being the highest scoring team in the comp doesn't necessarily equate to having a good forward line. In fact, the stats show that only two Geelong forwards are in the top 20 scorers in the league, numbered 12 and 16 (Mooney at 14.8 and N Ablett at 13.9), both forwards yet well behind the pace of the top four scoring players. To further push the point, the top team, the WCE do not have any players in the top 20, which shows that the big scoring means little.
Good luck to the Eagles, but I hope there is a party somewhere in Geelong or Melbourne Sat night so their match preparation is not up to scratch. :) (just kidding guys...really). Let's see which Geeliong side runs out on the ground. :)

Every team has arrogant supporters. In my experience, your average Cat supporter isn't terribly arrogant because our team is the ultimate definition of a squad of players sure to bring stress to your life.
But you'lll always get the most zealous and keen people here (which may appear arrogant), because this is the internet, where the rule "shake a tree and all the nuts fall out" always applies. :D (After all, I'm here too!)

The underlined bit sums up everything you need to know about the Cats, their supporters and their never ending failure to win anything. They continually overrate their own list and underrate other teams.
At present Geelong are 50:50 and have beaten the bottom 3 teams, that is the definition of a middle of the road side.
The West Coasts "A" game v Geelongs "A" game results in a very comfortable win to West Coast.

I'm going out on a limb here but...
The Eagles "B" game v the Cats "B" game results in a very comfortable win to the Eagles.

If the saints play their best they can beat anyone on their day

Get the drift? Its a weak argument. The reason why Sydney, WCE and Adelaide have been the best 3 sides in the competition the last few years is because they play their best consistently, and don't rely on getting lucky with their form.
Yeah, Geelong could beat us tomorrow, if they play better than us. Richmond or the Demons could beat us if they played better than us. Fact is, few teams do play better than us, hence our standing as the best side in the AFL.

I'll take comfort from anyone managing to beat west coast because god knows we can't manage it. That being said I hope you win tomorrow since it might bring my tips up to par :o
Back to the topic at hand though, I was lucky enough to be in Melbourne in round 2 and you would not believe the ridiculous hyperbole that errupted after Geelong belted Carlton. Every man and his dog was coming out saying they'd turned a corner, hawkins was paraded around as the next dunstall etc etc etc. This insecurity is a symptom of Victorian teams in general I think, they focus so much on what the other Victorian teams do that they think it's an achievement to beat any of them. That and they're desperate for just about anyone to compete with the decent interstate sides.
The underlined bit sums up everything you need to know about the Cats, their supporters and their never ending failure to win anything. They continually overrate their own list and underrate other teams.

While I think you're entitled to your opinion, your argument is hardly any differnet to the one you accuse me of making.
Simply put, I think Geelong's "A" side at home will always beat the WCE "A" side. The opposite is equally true- the WCE A side will beat the Cats at Suby, even at their best. The point is this: Geelong do not regularly field an "A" side- this is the real problem down at Skilled.
Sure, the Cats are definetely among the most "average" sides in the comp at this juncture of the season, but they have hardly been playing consistantly. This is the mystery- they're schitzo. I don't think anyone seriously into footy would think that if they played consistantly at their best that they would be a middle ladder team. Every serious punter sees tremendous potential there. However, because the game is played above the shoulders, they will probably never reach their peak potential. It's one of the mysteries of the footy gods that keeps the Cats as mentally volatile.
Like I said, I don't think they will win this week, but they just might. If the Eagles win, it won't make the headlines over here. No one cares anymore. If the Cats win, the media will go on and on about it for a week (much to the dismay of most serious Cats fans), and then the Cats will begin a losing streak.....'tis the way of the footy world at the Cattery.
