View Full Version : Goddard
Terrible news about Goddard tonight. Hopefully he'll be right for round 1 next year, should the ACL be the confirmed injury over the next couple of days.

I hate to say it, but Goddard will not be a huge loss. His body language during a game is terrible, he gets fired up, but he often takes it out on his teammates and the umps. Great player, but needs to sort out his attitude.
Sorry if I offend any supporters
Was visibly upset after the game, with most, if not all, of the players coming up to him after the game, and in the rooms.
Good luck to him, and I hope he makes a full recovery.

Crazyman - seriously ?
All Saints fans who actually go to games will confirm how important he has been to the team this year.
He's taken the role of 'quarter back' for the Saints, and if you've seen the way we play, you'll know how important he has been.
Got himself AFL sized as well, which I think has been a major reason for his confidence 'leap'.
The Saints will miss him - no doubt.

Yep it sucks heaps, hes a great/very important player. He can defend big forwards when required whilst gettin the ball many times to thump it to our players. His disposal efficiency is awesome. I went to the game tonight and as soon as he got hit to the ground u culd see how disappointed he was. He punched the ground becoz he hates not playing. Hope he recovers well:thumbsu:

It is terribly unfortunate that Brendan has ruptured his ACL.
Apart from the significant pain and discomfort over time, this injury requires reconstructive surgery and almost 12 months of recovery and rehabilitation.
The commitment behind the scenes to regain the level of fitness required for AFL is enormous.
I only hope that everything goes as smoothly as possible for him and that he finds support from the right people at the right times to make this process a relatively uneventful and easy enough to cope with.
Brendan has been a vital cog in the St Kilda machine. He can not be replaced.
Sure, someone will take his spot for the rest of the year but no-one can replace what he does for our team. A foreign poster suggested he will not be a huge loss. This guy is an ignorant fool or a troll.
I considered banning him, but realised that you cannot go around banning posters for their obvious lack of intelligence. Just accept that life has already dealt him a far worse punishment than I could ever impose on him.

Absolutely mate - thats what the forum is all about.
BUT......
You've clearly formed your opinion on Brendon Goddard's attitude after seeing one or two highlights from St Kilda games, and decided to post on a St Kilda forum, where most the the posters / readers are people who actually go to Saints games, and see the team dynamics, set plays, structure - and we see how much BJ's attitude has changed to make him the leader he now is.
So, please keep forming your own opinion, but just have a think about how you're going to sound before posting it.

As you can see, I am a "bigfooty newbie" so maybe I'm a little ignorant about how forums are supposed to work. Nevertheless, I have a problem with all of this threatened banning and blacklisting etc. I don't know why a guy should be accused of trolling for daring to say that he doesn't think Goddard will be a big loss. You can see from my earlier post how much I disagree with the statement but I always find that such statements bring out very enjoyable hearts-on-the-sleeves responses from Saints supporters.
Also, if you remember a couple of weeks back, we had Danielz (I think) claiming that the sky was falling in and the Saints were crap. I don't remember anyone calling him a troll, presumably because he was a Saints fan (sure, he copped it, but no one spoke about banning him, I'm pretty sure). So, if we are judging someone's opinion on the basis of the club they barrack for, frankly I find that puerile.
So if someone comes onto our board and says something stupid, can we just call him stupid and not threaten to ban him?

The club boards are moderated in a different way to the main football boards.
This board is meant for St Kilda supporters to discuss St Kilda related issues. Opposition supporters are welcome to post here but they have to respect the views and opinions of our supporters. If they don't, they are more than welcome to post on the main board or bay 13.
Even if what he said wasn't that bad, the problem with it is that our own supporters will respond and suddenly it turns into a slanging match which is precisely what we don't need on this board.

Just to sort things out. This forum is not a clone of Saintsational, nor is it a smaller version of the main board here at Big Footy.
Check out the post / thread entitled "Visitors" this was posted so that there would be communication of what this board is about.
I read almost every post posted on this board.
I have been doing so for at least 3 years.
In that time there have been numerous trolls and numerous junk threads.
When I became a moderator, it gave me the power to clean up this board.
Sainter and I have made the board cleaner. We have independantly discovered that it is better to be proactive, rather than let things go.
Things become more complex when you allow some poster to post stuff that another poster gets pinged for. People become aggrieved and private messages flow back and forth. So we try to be fair and consistent.
We have kept a pretty hard line for foreign posters.
They simply are not welcome to troll here.
Saints posters are welcome here. Even if what they are posting irritates or offends me. As long as I believe their heart is in the right place, they are welcome. I get narky sometimes because a poster with a message he needs heard will post it in several threads, rather than keeping it in one or two.
Some Saint posters push the bubble with respect to swearing and personal insults. These are usually in response to foreign posters (non-Saints).
I have found that being lenient and allowing a slanging match to occur does little for the decorum of the board.
So I tend to clean up the swearing Saint, and warn the visitor to be more respectful.
My threat of banning (above) was part of a very real process I practice.
Each time a foreign poster posts something contrary here, I try and decide whether the poster is genuine or a troll. A troll has his post deleted and is sent a warning or an infraction notice (judgement call). A contrary post with some genuine merit is retained. Sometimes these can rally the Saints fans, sometimes they might even be right.
There is a different standard for Sainters as there is for other club supporters.
But the same applies on every other club board here - how different the standard is dependant on the individual club board's moderators.

Actually, an injury like this one can progress in two different ways:
a) You cop it fatally and it takes you both phisically and psychologically a long long time to recover
b) The time you spend down in the training rooms while recovering strengthes your character and determination and you come back harder and stronger
A friend of mine who is specialist in sports medicine told me that the development doesn't depend on being mentally "weak" or "strong", but mainly on your "environment" and support net around you while injured. Thus, most professional atheletes have a good and smooth recovery from this long injuries, unless the people sorrounding them do not really help them but bury them even more (which I must say it is kind of stupid considering that the athlete's total recovery is in their best interest).
Maybe footy is a bit different, as we have seen with Lenny and Goose. They were already hard and strong, and noone doubted their recovery. And both came back earlier than most thought. But footy demands much more fitness that most team sports, and that requires time. Of course, Goddard is no exception, and although I believe he's going to have a full recovery, he is also going to take his time to get back to last and this year's form.
As you can see, I'VE BEEN ABLE to tell you why I believe what I believe, and I know it is the proven scientific truth based on scientific studies. Next time, mate, try to think before posting stupidities.
It was heart-breaking stuff watching BJ's watery eyes after the game. I hope he can follow, at least, Lenny's path into recovery and be ready for Rd 1 next year.

Here Here. Anyone posting on the St.Kilda board has no right to complain about the moderating.....One of the best (and Most Leanient on the site).
AND Fehrig,
Its not the fact that this poster has a differing opinion to the issue, its the simple fact that the bloke has just done his knee, was starting to play some of his best football and he now faces the setback of nearly 2 years to regain full fitness.
Its a slap in the face to Goddard as a person, he deserves a break and I for one dont tolerate kicking them when their down - whether their outright superstars or fringe players.

Before this gets out of hand, let me say that I value Fehring's feedback.
This site is for Saints fans and although we all are different, the string that ties us together is a shared history and a love of the red white and black.
I want to make this board exactly what Saints fans want. So when someone says "hey, is this how we want to be?" I listen.
Sometimes a perfect world and reality overlap, sometimes they don't.
(meaning that if I can take it on board and implement your suggestions I will)
It's also nice to get the positive feedback that SpInNeR has given - funny that you say lenient - only Sainters would say so though. Have had a bit of a nasty streak in me on Bay 13 recently ;)
