If Rooke were to come in this week, who would make way for him?

Mackie looks to be injured, so it should be a straight swap.

14 May 2007, 01:40
nahh you would swap Mackie for Harley.. Harley wouldn't have lost an ounce of fitness during his injury.
Leave Rooke in the VFL for now, the dilemma for the team is where do we fit in Rooke, Harley and Chapman next week?
IMO IN:Chap and Harley Out: Tenace and Mackie
Good thing to know is that we have a bout 27 players all able to be in the best 22

chapman had a 2 week injury so wont be available next week.
If Mackie is Ok dropping him would be a disgrace. I am gald we have so many selection dilemmas.
Possibly DJ and Tenace could make way for Rooke & Harley, but it is a tough call.

No way there'll be that many changes.
no chance in hell kelly will be dropped esp after yday, i thought his attack on the ball was the best i've seen, sure he he still abit dodgy with his kicking but no way he gets dropped.
Out - D.Johnson, Tenace,
In - harley, Rooke
When chapman comes back i feel it will be for Hawkins and also selwood will get a rest in the next fortnight with Prismall getting a run, most likely hawkins and Selwood won't make the trip to adel in a fortnight.
I don't like reading today that Thompson thinks that we can play Blake, king and Ottens in the same side, Ottens has to play the majority in the ruck and if king plays i don't c him doing much up forward to be honest, we can't have all 3 playing thats just rubbish as far as i'm concernd

If Tenace goes out I think Byrnes has to go in... we lose too much pace if one of these two are out..

No changes!!!
Rooke in if Mackie injured.
Prismall in if Selwood rested (has mild concussion and therefor might require a rest)
Must keep team balance
Dj out for Rooke
Tenace out for Prismall
Kelly out for Chapman
Hawkins out for Harley
Still another week away

Why on earth would they drop Tenace..........or Mackie for that matter if he is not injured??
Tenace had another good game, he is providing a lot of run, his kicking is getting better and better and his confidence is growing in the ability to take on players with his pace (which I am beginning to see again). Plus the fact that Prismall plays a different type of game. He will have to wait until a midfield type falls over before he gets back in.
Mackie is becoming the "go to" player out of the back half - he has vision where others do not. If he does not come up then I see Harley taking his spot.
With Rooke; do they err on the side of caution and give him one more or do they bring him back in and play him on Pavlich like they did successfully a couple of years ago? Needs to come in, will depend who they have in mind in the back half and maybe D.Johnson will drop back, not due to form, but for team balance, or Selwood due to concussion?
Whichever way they go with any players - going to be a tough choice for the selectors.
For me:
In Rooke, Harley
Out Selwood (conc), D.Johnson

Another Rooke dilemma - Thompson bringing him back for a tagging role to free up Ling to get 35 possessions. :o
Or maybe i'm too cynical.

It's in the Hun. The silver lining is that from what Bomber said earlier in the paragraph it won't happen for a few weeks.

Selwood Hawkins need a rest. They are only pups and have had a great start to the year. If they were dropped back to VFL there is no discrace. Both have been more serviceable than we could've hoped for.
Is Rooke 110% ready to come back? Is he in the best 22? I know he has a heart the size of Ayres Rock but is he really ready?
David J v's Tennace v's Prismall v's Byrnes v's Kelly v's Stokes. I like this little battle. It can only make the boys want to earn their spot even more. Rotate them all around until one really puts their hand up.
Blake and Ottens are our best Ruck setup. Sorry Kingy but your best days are behind you. There is only a spot for King if two of Hawkins, Ottens, Blake or Mooney are missing. Harsh but fact.

So, it's official - I'm the only one around here who thinks Mackie doesn't hit an effective target nearly often enough?

Yes, I think you might be! Has become much more solid and reliable, his kicking is long and creative and gives us a lot of run from the backline.

He sometimes coughs it up at Half Back with poor disposal I agree but his run and kick into the forward 50 is excellent. As a defender he isn't the strongest of players but he has height and speed which make him effective. He has been playing well and overall I'd give him a 7/10 for the season so far. He certainly is in our best 18 at the moment.

Who in the team currently does? About the only players I could think of yesterday who didn't give it straight to the opposition are Hawkins, DJ, Bartel and Corey - the first two because they barely saw any of it and the second two because they were a cut above. Mackie has provided a ton of run this year - between him, Woja, Milburn and Enright our half-back line is looking very dangerous on the rebound, even if they could do more to improve their disposal.

Whilst he may miss every so often, if we were going to drop those who cannot do it at all, then Enright should be first to go :D.
At least Mackie gets it in the general vicinity........most of the time.

also, when mackie mis-kicks, it drops short, far better then just missing the target all together, or putting it over the other players head.

Obviously I am. Maybe I should stop drinking during games :)
Nearly pulled my hair out when his errant handball allowed Priddis to goal, but hey, as long as he has pace and can kick it long, I suppose I should be happy.

I think he's one of the more skilled players in our team. Sometimes his foot skills can be beautiful to watch. Remember everyone has a clanger or two...

His middle name was Max as that was the name of both his grandfathers...short of it is that he liked the name and was sick of people misspelling Jarrad so he changed it.

What dilemma?
Rooke is easily in out best 18 players. He should come straight back in. Mackie, Varcoe, Stokes. They would be easily dropped to make way for him. He's ahead of David Johnson too not to mention a few others.
We will step up quite a few cogs when we get him in the team. Rooke is a gun! :thumbsu:

He played VFL this week and done pretty good he's good but he wont walk straight back in. He needs to get himself right first and get some match fitness under his belt

I thought he played very well in the VFL, he is such an important player for us that he should come into the team ASAP, this is what i'd like to see.
In: Harley, Rooke
Out: Tenace, ? If Makie or Selwood are injured which they may be.
I hope Selwood is not injured because he was quite good on Sunday, just needs time to develop, he's an excellent player for someone so new to this level of the game.

the handball; wasn't errant it was headed for Bartel. Priddis just read the play well and intercepted it. You can't blame Mackie for that.

If Harley is not regained via the VFL the Geelong Football Club has learnt nothing.
Tenace out, Prismall in.
Mackie deserves to stay in the team, even if he is only 85%.
On the issue of Rooke however, I believe D. Johnson should make way - he is a useless footballer anyway.

But he can hit an ineffective target:thumbsu:
I know this seems to be my weekly post but FFS Tenace will not be dropped. His disposal was fine whilst he was out there but the main thing he did was to back himself. A few times he could've simply rushed a behind but instead decided to take on the opposition and just ran away from them. Confidece was always going to be the key for him and now that he's up, why kick him in the guts and drop him? Keep him in and watch him progress into the midfield.
Chappy needs another week so Rooke and perhaps King (to triple team Sandilands??) should be the only two discussed at the selection table.

You're kidding; only forced changes to a line-up that does over unbeaten WCE by 39 points. Forced changes mean (i) injuries or (ii) front-line players return. That includes Chapman and the captain. All things being equal (height, size, utility etc) last in is the first out! Exceptions prove rules too, don't forget, and Freo will have real trouble matching up on young Tom.

Yeah, very good point.
I really don't see how it's a dilemma. We can all agree that Rooke is a better player than DJ...so drop DJ. Pretty simple, really.

I never suggested it was a Dilemma on whether we should bring Rooke back in, he's easily in our best 22. It was more who would we drop...
I would say Rooke for DJ...
And that's all for this week.
I spose the next question is, who makes way for Harley when he's ready to come back in? And when they bring King back how do they fit him in then? Him and Blake in the ruck and Ottens primarily up forward? Will be interesting to see how they handle it all... Spose it's a good thing though, to have a lot of in form players though...

Totally agree,Rooke is the same type of player as Johnson but better and more versatile.
Tenace on the other hand brings pace and line breaking abilities that are essential to our game plan.

Mackie often has that "rabbit in headlights" look when under pressure. So does Ling for that matter. I suspect it's been drilled into them that our midfield and backline have a rep for turning the ball over so they try doubly hard not to (which, ironically, sometimes means that they do).
Having said all that I think Mackie is having his best year at the club, and I think his presence in the backline puts some real pressure on some of the other defenders because he runs forward and kicks goals (not generally a feature of our backline in recent years). He also did a pretty decent job on Buddy when we played the Hawks. For comparison, take a look at the job three All Australians did when the Dons played them.
