Vaughan reveals Ashes exclusion

Michael Vaughan has complained of being excluded from the England dressing room during the winter Ashes series.
Vaughan missed the series with a knee injury but flew to Australia before the first Test in Brisbane with the aim of completing his rehabilitation.
"I wasn't involved at all, I think we could have used me more," said Vaughan, who will miss this week's Test against West Indies with a broken finger.
"I'm an Ashes-winning captain and there are times when I could have helped."
Vaughan intends to be part of the England dressing room at Lord's this week, suggesting he has a closer relationship with new coach Peter Moores than previous incumbent Duncan Fletcher.

I have to have a huge say in and around the team because of the fact it's a new regime

Michael Vaughan

"Andrew Strauss will take the team out and make the decisions on the pitch, but I have to have a huge say in and around the team because of the fact it's a new regime.
"Peter and I are working together for the first time - and a week later I hope I'll be back as England captain.
"The combination of the captain and coach is going to be such a critical one."
Vaughan says he is confident of returning to the side for the second Test against West Indies, which starts at Headingley on 25 May.
He revealed he came close to starting Thursday's opening Test, saying "I could probably have got through it but I allowed my head to rule my heart."

Peter's come in with a clean slate for everyone. What's happened in the past has happened

Michael Vaughan

The 32-year-old has been beset for much of the past 18 months by a succession of injuries, principally to his knee.
He also said the decision to hand Strauss the temporary captaincy over Andrew Flintoff was not based on the all-rounder's indiscretions at the World Cup.
"It is disappointing for Fred - but Andrew did a good job last summer.

"I think it's the best decision for the team. The amount Freddie has to deal with - batting, bowling and fielding at slip - makes it a lot to ask of a guy to captain as well. "Peter's come in with a clean slate for everyone. What's happened in the past has happened. "I think that's why everyone is excited about the new regime, because we all are looking forward. Sometimes when you have a regime that's been going on for a long time people look too much in the past."

What a rat, distancing himself from the humiliation & effectively damning his buddy Fletcher.

His captaincy is grossly overrated, anyone would look good with 2 years of Flintoff, Harmison, Hoggard & Jones all fit, keen, eager & hungry.

Nasser or Atherton would have looked just as good with that kind of armoury, maybe Stewart would still have looked a one dimensional witless up & at em type.

Lest we forget the great Simon Jones was always ignored by Vaughan at key points in matches, only given a bowl when the ball was old, batsmen were set & the other 3 needed a breather before the 2nd new ball.

He only stumbled on his potential by luck in the 3rd Test, he was chronically underbowled in SA where he took 15w at 25 whilst Harmy was bowling heaps for a series average of 73.

I don't contribute to the rest so i take this as personal robbery. Always the same the Aussies... :p

Seriously though you can see what he's going to do but hopefully a new coach will mean a whole new start for the team...

Strauss not worried by Vaughan

Julian Guyer

London - England stand-in captain Andrew Strauss has said he won't feel overshadowed by the presence of Michael Vaughan during the first Test against the West Indies at Lord's, starting on Thursday.
Strauss, who led England during their last home season when knee and then hamstring injuries sidelined Vaughan, will captain the team again after Vaughan was ruled out of the first match of a four-Test series following a broken finger sustained while batting for Yorkshire against Hampshire's Australia quick Stuart Clark.
But Vaughan, who has said he felt his knowledge had been underused during England's 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia, when Andrew Flintoff was the captain, will be at Lord's this week.
The batsman has insisted he has no ulterior motive than to assist Strauss, who led England to a 3-0 Test series win against Pakistan, in what will be the first match England have played under new coach Peter Moores.
"It's not as if I'm not experienced enough," Strauss told reporters here on Wednesday. "I've done it in these circumstances before. Prior to the first Test, I didn't think it was going to be an option. We all thought Vaughany would be fit. But it's important for me to set the right example from the off.
'Very comfortable' with Vaughan around

"I've been chatting with Vaughany about setting the tone right from the off and in this first Test it's my responsibility to do that," opening batsman Strauss, who plays county cricket at Lord's for Middlesex.
And he insisted he was "very comfortable" with Vaughan being around the England dressing room this week. "The likelihood is he will be ready for the second Test and he's the captain for the series.
"It's not a problem for me. Also he's a very experienced captain and he's got the ability to see things other people might not. I'm certainly not going to be stubborn enough to say 'I'm not going to listen to you Vaughany'. I'll be more than happy to listen.
"We get on pretty well, I'm more than happy he's here. It's important, if I am leading the side, I am leading the side but at the same time if he's got advice it's fine for him to say that.
"In a way captaincy has aided my batting," said Strauss, who last week made a century for Middlesex against Nottinghamshire. "I'm in good spirits."
Can have an input

Moores added: "Michael has got a lot to offer. But we'll balance it. If Andrew wants some time (alone) with the team, he doesn't have to be in the dressing room every second of the day. He can have an input but it certainly won't get in the way of Andrew doing his role as captain."
Despite their Ashes hammering, England remain second in the world Test rankings and are up against a West Indies ranked a lowly eighth, who are without now retired former captain and star batsman Brian Lara and have had just one day of match practice since arriving from the Caribbean.
"The public are entitled to see England play in the way we have done over the last few years," said Strauss. "Australia are a long way ahead at the moment and we've got a long way to go to reach those standards and surpass those standards.
"This is the start of that process and the guys feel very motivated."
Meanwhile Strauss said it was important Fletcher's eight years in charge weren't just brushed aside.
"Duncan was so much part of the furniture, you can't erase him from memory and nor should you because he was a fantastic coach for England. "Hopefully you still have that knowledge Duncan's imparted over the years but maybe you'll now be challenged in different ways."

So is yawn exaggerating?

Vaughan Was Not Under Used

May 17 2007

http://images.teamtalk.com/07/03/247/allsportdavidgraveney2007_203440.jpg Graveney - on the defence again.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney has claimed reports of Michael Vaughan's frustration of being under-used during the Ashes series in Australia are exaggerated.
The England skipper claimed his experience could have been of greater help as Andrew Flintoff (http://www.cricket365.com/story/0,18305,6575_2131923,00.html#) struggled with the captaincy as Australia completed a 5-0 whitewash.
At the time the Yorkshire batsman was continuing his rehabilitation from a knee injury that had seen him miss almost the entire 2006 season.
When asked if Vaughan had expressed any frustrations at the time, Graveney told Five Live: "I spoke to him from time to time but he was in Australia and I was in Bristol.
"One of the areas they will probably talk about when the Schofield report comes out is the question of communication.
"I think there have been various articles suggesting Michael was a bad influence: that wasn't the case, i think that is mischievous writing.
"Michael was out there doing his rehabilitation. If he was not out there doing his rehab where was he supposed to do it? Go to Russia or somewhere like that? I think a lot of people have made too much out of it."
Vaughan was ruled out of the first npower Test against West Indies after breaking his finger while playing for Yorkshire against Hampshire although Graveney was optimistic the 32-year-old will return for next week's Test at Headingley.
"I think it is probably more frustrating for him. Breaking fingers is an occupational hazard for batsmen but fortunately it's not his index finger which would take ages.
"He is going to have a bit of a hit over the weekend so hopefully he will be ready by Headingley.
"If an individual isn't fit to fulfil his job and (we are) trying to patch him up with injections - and this is a back to back Test match scenario - there is no point taking that risk."
Graveney also denied any knowledge of reports that former South African fast bowler Allan Donald has been targeted to work with England's seam attack.
"The last time I saw (bowling coach) Kevin Shine was yesterday and he was off to do some work with some bowlers. Allan Donald has worked in the UK and I suggest you watch that space - the same as I will."
