I would say Ricciuto is the best player that has represented the AFC, but we won’t go there. ;)

His current contract expires at the end of 2008, and at that time he will be 32. I would think another 2 year contract would be on the cards which would more than likely see out his career, and what a fine career it has been. A big time performer if there ever was one.

i think people that say he is in career best form this year is an insult.. there were a few years (the year he should have won the brownlow i think in 2001?) where he was unstoppable.. much like judd.. however his knees gave way and is still a champion player but i personally believe hes had the single greatest year of any crows player in our history, despite ricciutos brownlow etc.

in answer to your question, he'll go when hes ready when hes not enjoying himself and sees himself not being able to contribute as much as hed like. i think he'll retire at the end of 2009

a player like mattner could be groomed to take over his crucial half back flank spot.. good at breaking lines, has pace and has a booming kick

As sad as it will be when he does go, I am confident craigy is will plan for it.

And Macca has helped out Stiffy a lot - there is him too.

Can't imagine it and don't want to either.

My all time favourite Crow... will be a sad, sad day.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, it's still a long way off, at least 2 years, I would say 3. That's still 3 premierships that we will win with Macca running off half back. Thankfully his bung knees seem to have settled down, which we all thought might cut him short. Macca will be here for a while yet. Enjoy it. I am.

If the club continues with it's present policy, they will only offer a one year contract to anyone over 30. That would include Macca I imagine.

The AFC have a policy of not giving players aged 30+ multi-year contracts. They bent the rules with Macca's current contract (was signed within days of his 30th birthday though). They won't be bending them again, not when he will be 32 by the time his contract comes up for renewal. Expect him to be on 1-year contracts from here on out.

I personally would expect him to retire at the end of 2009. Assuming he remains injury free and Adelaide play 2 finals in each of his remaining seasons, that would give him 65 more games (barring injury - and despite his knee he has been one of our most durable players). Given that he's now on 267 games, There's every chance he could (and should) become our 3rd 300+ game player, probably finishing as the AFC games record holder.

Adelaide truly have been spoiled by having so many outstanding players in this current generation. Ben Hart and Mark Ricciuto have already passed the 300 game milestone, injury permitting Andrew McLeod and Tyson Edwards are almost certain to reach that milestone as well. Only Simon Goodwin appears likely to fall short (would need to play until at least 2011 to make it, unlikely given that he's already turned 30).

It is going to be a very sad day indeed when Andrew McLeod retires. He's given us so many magical memories. In my mind, nothing separates him from Roo as the "greatest player in the club's history". Both have an honours list as long (if not longer) than their arms. Both will be automatic inclusions to the AFL Hall of Fame as soon as they become eligible.

Agree the way he is playing ATM, and as long as he has a passion to play and his knees are going okay another three and half seasons to come from the great man:thumbsu:

I want us to give him another crack at a Norm Smith.
I want him to be remembered as the best big game player ever.

As time passes it is inevitable that Macca will retire. As special as Roo has been, McLeod is the one the majority of kids including myself have looked up to over the years. He will forever be known locally as a legend, and in my opinion the greatest player our club has had.

Personally I find it nearly impossible to imagine an Adelaide side without McLeod, and so I ask the question: How many years do you think he has left in him? Lord knows he is closer to the end than the start, and that saddens me very much. :(

Definitely this year and a couple more IMO.

He's been a joy to watch for over a decade now.

It'll be a shocking day when there's no more Macca. :(

Gets!

yup. I agree :thumbsu:

Imo he is the best. I remember Roo was often criticised back in the day for not being able to really break into a lot of games...he matured a lot with age though and went on to do great things. No question Roo has been a great player but when you look at the legacy the AFC has created (short it may be) it's McLeod with the two norm smith medals around his neck, he was instrumental in us achieving the unthinkable back-to-back dream and for that he should be remembered as being on par, if not above, Ricciuto. It hurt enough not having him in the side for those games last year, imagine what it'll be like when he finally hangs up the boots. *cries like a baby*
agree totally, we would probably rate him higher than roo if he had won that brownlow when he was bent over, the one where he had 38 possies against the roos and didnt register a vote!!

And what a ****ing joke that was.

Seriously I can't remember being that angry at what was happening on a TV ever, and that includes actual footy matches. Makes me sick to this very day.
my dad and i were yelling at the tv... was pure evil by the umpires

RooDog
17 May 2007, 00:15
Lol, yeah for once we were going off our nuts at an umpiring decision that wasn't made during a game which is...kind of weird to think about. They can't escape our criticism. :p
haha yer they cop it all the time, generally they dont influence the outcome of games but the certainly do with the brownlow

Adelaide without Macca would be like pizza without coke ( not the powdered variety),sex without foreplay, or sheedy without a pensioner card.

Akermanis also got 3 votes in this game (http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/games/2001/BLGE20010826.html) while Simon Black got nothing - if he gets bumped back to second preference and Macca picks up extra votes for the Kangas game, as logic would have it, well...

Deserved to share it with him at the very least - the Leigh Matthews Trophy is consolation at least.

Summary: The 2001 medal count was an absolute joke and as far as I'm concerned Macca may as well be the 2001 Brownlow medalist. I hope he can win it this year. :thumbsu:

1993 was even worse
