AFL SYDNEY ROUND ONE

The University of New South Wales – Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs struggled before shaking off a challenge from a depleted Pennant Hills Demons outfit at Gore Hill to open season 2002.

“We have a few new players in the side and we didn’t gel, so we need to work on our teamwork a fair bit.” Said Bulldogs Coach Tim Jones after the game. “Pennant Hills are a good quality side. They really wanted to win today. We really just got away with it in the last quarter.”

The first half was a low scoring and bruising affair in the blustery conditions. After half time the floodgates opened as the Bulldogs - capitalising on some undisciplined play by the Demons - proved too quick and tall for the determined Pennant Hills side.

“It was pretty much how I expected.” Observed Pennant Hills Coach Danny Ryan. “The superior height and Quality of [UNSW-ES] players took over in the end.”

New Bulldogs recruit and former VFA player, Darren Mitchelson, illustrated this with a spectacular mark of the day.

To their credit the Demons played a direct style of football and never stopped trying.

Down the road at North Sydney Oval the Swans of the future gave reigning premiers North Shore a fright, with the Redbacks superior fitness seeing them narrow the gap against their bigger opponents after the Bombers went out to an early lead.

Ex-Bomber Lewis Roberts-Thompson proved a handful for his old club during the first half.

“The young blokes to their credit put in a good showing against a quality football team.” Said Redbacks Coach Brett Allison.

In other games Campbelltown got home against the East Coast Eagles in a close one and an improved Western Suburbs came from behind to overrun the St George Crows.

Are there only 8 teams in the comp, or did Balmain have a bye ?

Balmain, who are captain/coached by ex-Swan Troy Luff (who comes with his own personal Cheer Squad) did indeed have the bye. They face the rampaging Easts this weekend. I'll be posting a preview later tonight (i.e. when I get it done - hell, I can spell deadline, I must be a journalist!)
I have a Sydney AFL draw somewhere on this computer and I'll post it ASAP.
And Satay Mat, the team that wins through a forfeit gets the highest score that was achieved elsewhere in the round and, yes, it does count towards percentage.
Either that or they use Robbie Waterhouse as a scorekeeper.

Any news on the Fitzroy Reds yet anyone?

Kev? Where are youuuuuuuu?
