Woooooooooooooooo what a win! We roll into the eight with two wins and a loss by the narrowest of margins. Alas I couldn't be at Subi today, but here were my thoughts on our performance...
The Absolutely Bloody Superlatively Fantastic- Glen Jakovich. Not only was Jako best on ground, he was best by an extremely large margin- Mopped up everything off halfback, thrashed every guy who was put on him, picked up 22 possessions, took eight marks, including mark of the day, and dished out a (literally) bone crunching hip and shoulder. Not just vintage Jako, better than vintage!
The Good- For us, Gaspar cemented his spot in the side with a solid, competent performance and two goals. Cousins was good if not brilliant, Phil Matera looked dangerous, and Gardiner probably had the best of the ruck duel. Kerr bounced back after a couple of disappointing weeks, Judd continued with his excellent form, Glass did a competent job on Grant and Williams certainly didn't disappoint. The delivery into the forward line hurt Wilson, but he still kicked 4, taking him to 15 for the season, and two clear of the next highest goal kicker in the league- Coleman Medal here we come! :)
For them- Kingsley Hunter did a serviceable job on Wilson, Garlick played Cousins reasonably well and gathered 19 possies of his own, Scott West probably was second best on ground after Jako, and Giansiracusa ran rampant, although his game was hurt by poor accuracy, kicking 2 goals 6.
The Bad- For us, Banfield struggled again and aside from a solitary goal in the dying minutes, Haynes was not sighted. Fletcher was average with only 11 possessions and a goal, and still needs to do more to cement his spot.
For them, Grant underperformed with only 8 possessions, although in his defense he did kick a couple of goals.. The poor three unlucky schmoes who were put on Jakovich were humiliated one after another, whilst Brad Johnson spoiled an otherwise reasonable performance with poor kicking.
The Ugly- First things first, the kicking- both teams kicked ordinarily on goals, although the Bulldogs excelled themselves, kicking an amazing 11 goals 15 behinds.
Our skills were still not quite where they need to be, with several costly turnovers including a hilarious five metre kick off the mark by Jakovich deep in defense (Glen's only blemish on an otherwise flawless performance), which could have cost us except the Bulldogs player picked it up, snapped from thirty metres out, and put it out of bounds on the full. If we're going to beat the good teams in the competition we have to improve.
Meanwhile, the umpiring was bad-to-very bad, with the usual quota of wrong, bloody wrong, and outright inexplicable decisions. Depressingly enough, i'm having trouble remembering when i last saw a well umpired game.
Also bizarre was a Bulldogs kick on goal from fifty, which sailed into the goal line, hit the ground, i swear, five cm out from the goal line, and sat there without bouncing until Jakovich ran back and gathered... What the hell?
Meanwhile, full sympathy to the dogs' two serious injuries during the game... brings back nightmare memories of last year, when we couldn't seem to get through a game without severely injuring a few players... Better luck next time guys!
